I am only using basic lighting ATM to get the shell of my map up and running, but will the textures automatically be bummapped when a light hits them? Or do I need to configure something else to enable this?

I'm almost certain you have to provide a bumpmap image and specify it in the material VMT, as explained in the SDK doc.

bearing in mind that I am using default textures that came with HL2 and CS:S :-)

Nope, since default texture VMTs are in the GCF.
