I hate when I'm texturing things in hammer while carving them. What would happen is I get the c1a0_labglu texture and put it where I want a sliding door. I then give the sides c1a0b_dr4 and carve it. However, when I try to do it to another door, I accidently forget that when I use the texture to apply the new texture, it selects all of those textures. I would forget and appy, and the carved-doors would all turn out wrong. I hate doing them over, is there any way to stop this function?

Use the clip tool instead of carving. That should fix it.
(Seriously, there's no need to carve, and it usually results in inefficient brushes, ie. Horizontal cuts in walls when you should be clipping a vertical cut for the doorframe)

Do not carve. Period.

The clip tool (not to be confused with the CLIP texture) is perfect to cut a hole in a wall for a door or window. Do that first, then apply the texture.

Carving should have never been included in hammer at all. Even though I have mastered it and know when to use it I still prefer to create all my brushes from scratch. I use the clone tool more than anything.

The clip tool is also very useful for breaking a brush into more than one piece. Especially good for objects with more than 4 sides that you want to chop.

I also work in nodraw first to avoid unwanted/unseen textures. Math and numbers are your friend. Work in units of 8 and you shouldn't have a problems with textures.

Trust me, the crave tool is evil. My early maps prove this!

I do use units of 8 and thanks for all the info, but how do you cut out specific holes? I can only use the clip to cut edges and give a bit of a bend.

You need to click on the clip tool button multiple times to switch modes. There are three:

Keep right half (white lines), remove left half (red lines)
Keep left half (same above)
Keep both halfs (all white lines)

Select the wall.
Click the clip tool.
Draw a line on the selected wall.
Depending on the mode, the left side is either red while the right side is white or vise versa, or both sides are white.

Click on the clip tool to select the mode you want.
Then hit enter.

But that only cuts it, I know how to do that.

How do I cut a hole into it using only one object.

You want to cut a whole in the wall that is the size of the one object?
You can do that by carving the object into the wall, but as stated before, carving is bad. It creates a mess of off-grid vertices which can cause leaks and ugly cracks in the wall ingame. Don't do it.

Its better to create individual brushes in combination with the clip tool to make the hole you want.

Had a look at the problem using Teamviewer, he was clicking the mark button on the texturebrowser everytime he selects a texture. That selected all the faces in the map that had the choosen texture applied. All he had to do is just double click.

i carve all the time to and keep it neat, even when I don't need to. After making my floor, I make a big block around it and carve in the middle so I can texture it all at once.

Carve, carve, carve, carve, too much carving but I'm okay and I like it, I'm with Tetsu0.

i see what you did there.
I only carve for doorways and windows and such.
nothing more or less than 4 sides, and only into another 4 sided face.
I usually have a doorframe sized brush and a window sized brush hanging around in my map so i can move it in and carve to make quick work of walls.

Yeah i guess that works. Carving simple shapes like 6 sided cubes into other 6 sided cubes works, but carving more complex objects like cillinders and arches... OUCH! Don't do that.

Well, you make your floor and put a large block exactly above it touching it. Then, make another block that cuts through the middle of the last part. Without ig, click it and texture it and DONE!

IMO Brushwork 101 should be mandatory in every elementary school on the globe. Cut health class to make budget who needs that anyways :P

it doesn't do any good carving. Because I see some terribly stretched textures on the tops of the walls.

is just when I click "Full" and then do the textures. I make every wall block like that because it's simpler and impossible to see if there was a ceiling.

You have a lot to learn, Dimbark. A good mapper doesn't create a room by just simply carving a massive brush into another massive brush, a good mapper creates the walls, floors, ceillings and whatnot manually, brush by brush.

haha me too...

if you want to do it the way you need to make four brushes making a square hole
then make 4 cubes, cut them from corner to corner to make a triangle, then put them in the hole for a
stop sign type a shape... thats a very basic hole
