satchmo satchmo“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. -- Samuel Beckett”
A mother brings in her 4-year-old boy because she is concerned about his increasing clumsiness. He has been previously healthy and achieved developmental milestones on time. His growth parameters are normal. On physical examination, his mental status is normal, as are results of cranial nerve and sensory examinations and reflexes. However, he cannot rise from the floor without using his hands, and his running looks clumsy.
Of the following, the MOST appropriate next test to assess the cause of this child's symptoms is

electromyography

lumbar puncture

measurement of serum creatine kinase

muscle biopsy

spine magnetic resonance imaging

i'd say muscle biopsy. Those legs sound a tad weak.

Could also be auto-immune. Test for Lupus.

Try the CPK measurement. It could be muscular dystrophy.

You might give the electromyography a go in order to see how the muscles are reacting, which could still be muscular dystrophy among a crap-tonne of other muscle activation problems :/

Child has dyslexia. put the child and the entire hospital on lockdown to prevent spreading of this highly contagious, virulent disease.

Prescribe patient to put the lime in the coconut and call back in the morning..

Wait three days, tell the mother that the test results are back, and then tell her that he's going to die. Wait for it to sink in, and then yell "April Fools!"

Do a Dr House on him. Ignore the family, abuse your team, and when all else fails save him last minute. Also, get a cane.

Use a scalpel to kill the patient. Then kill everyone else. Then no-one will be pissed off with you for killing the patient.

Yep, you guessed it... I know nothing of medicine.

Doctor's don't usually kill people, Darkie. It's a major breach of the oath.

Something tells me he already knew that

Is this a real question or just something you made up?
I want to know the answer ;O

It's a real question.

And the correct answer is "measuring creatine kinase".

Many of you guessed the right answer. I don't know how.

This patient most likely has muscular dystrophy.
