satchmo satchmo“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. -- Samuel Beckett”
My son already recognizes all the main characters in Half-Life 2.

He was playing with my game boxes the other day, and when he found the Half-Life 2 one, he pointed to it and said "Alyx".

Good thing Gordon's a mute. Otherwise, his first words would've been some one-liner he'd say ingame. ;>

Ask him to write it out and if he writes Alex instead of Alyx then get mad ;)
Commented 14 years ago2009-05-07 12:31:45 UTC Comment #47479
Nah, tell him to write Alex, it's way better.

HALF-LIFE 2 ADDICT!! :-D AWESOME! Hahahaha! Don't forget to teach him how to teach him about headshots, antlion bait and the G-man :-P

You're aware that he's learning like a robot at his age, don't you ?
Also, teach him more things about real world : if he grows up learning only virtual stuff then a virtual person he will be.

Satchmo's teaching him real world stuff, he only shares the HL related stuff with us.
Good job. Now go make a small, combatless map where he can learn the fundementals of the E key and chucking bottles and phones at unsuspecting citizens. :3

He already knows all of the alphabets, can count to 17, all the colors, shapes, and different types of motor vehicles. He speaks both English and Chinese. He's not even two years old yet.

I am afraid that if I teach him more, he'll be going straight to college by the time he's six years old.

Don't stop the progress. Get him started on Japanese and German.
Commented 14 years ago2009-05-07 16:48:02 UTC Comment #47474
I wish I could count to 17.

:(

I think he's more advanced than I am.

... well, maybe not, but hey.
Commented 14 years ago2009-05-07 17:47:14 UTC Comment #47470
He can count to 17!? Why that number? He's obsessed with Half Life 2.

Welcome, welcome to City 17.

The only problem is that he really likes the Metro Police.

Every time he sees one, he wants to hug the police.

He's not doing it right.
Commented 14 years ago2009-05-08 04:53:51 UTC Comment #47477
Better than teaching him to attack police with crowbars. That's something that might just possibly not be benifical in the real world.

There is really no reason for people to learn languages like German or Japanese. Sure, many millions of people use the languages but eventually they will (or should) die out in favor of languages like English (because it's a big language and THE language you need to know when using a computer), Mandarin (because it's used by so many people) or perhaps a language which is actually good (doesn't have unnecessary complex grammar and is easy to learn).
Many thousands of human languages isn't a good thing.

Japanese isn't going to "die out" any time soon. Their culture is literally thousands of years old, and they're way too prideful of their history to switch to another language.

The same goes for Arabic.

But we digress.
Let your kid keep hugging metrocops. There might be an extra ration reward in it for you.

Imagine what could we do if more than 15% of our brain would be active so we could retain more things !
Commented 14 years ago2009-05-08 12:53:14 UTC Comment #47464
That's not how it works. 15% is used by the conscious part. The other 85% is very much in use maintaining everything else. And really, it's a lot more than 15% that's dedicated to consciousness. More like 2/3 of the brain.

Anyway, if you give more power to consciousness, you'd actually be able to retain less information in long term memory.

Well, being overly violent to the CP's won't be good in the real world until the uprising, I can tell you that.
