Could also be damaging your motherboard and/or videocard and/or anything else it's hooked up to. Better get on that Pronto.

It's not often I hear a power supply unit going bad, more often than not is the mother board or memory sticks that could go bad.

How exactly is it that you learned that your "power box thingy", which I assume you are referring to the power supply unit, is the component that is breaking down? Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying it can't be the power supply unit, after all it could very well be it. All I am asking is to provide more details on why you think it is the power supply unit.

yea, I don't think I know of a way to test it other than buy a new one and make sure the company has at least a 15-day return policy.
But as Tito said it could be an error elsewhere.

When I read the first words on the homepage, I thought you had discovered some sort of power.

If you're sure the problem is the power supply, you can borrow(or use your own if you have) a multimeter, switch to the appropriate scale on DC voltage and thest a molex cable. You can check the 12v line for example.
Note down the voltage while the pc is idle. Now put a map to compile, and see again the voltages. If the difference is big, the problem is your power supply.

To add what striker said: If the voltage drop is anything more than .1 or .2 of a volt, your powersupply is having loading issues, which means it essentially can't handle putting out that much power.
