Intel recently unveiled a new
prototype 48-core CPU, and all the size of a postage stamp. Whilst there have been CPUs with even more cores then this, this particular CPU can run ordinary operating systems instead of specialized systems that other much larger CPUs are made for.
Whats more, their release date (according to the article) will be in 2010. A pretty big leap up from the 8-core CPUs from the start of '09.
Remember that the size of your processor is mostly for the connections. The actual silicon part is about the size of a pinkie-nail.
This will mean an extremely high price.
Also, will software have to be specially coded to take advantage of the power offered?
