Intel recently unveiled a new prototype 48-core CPU, and all the size of a postage stamp. Whilst there have been CPUs with even more cores then this, this particular CPU can run ordinary operating systems instead of specialized systems that other much larger CPUs are made for.

Whats more, their release date (according to the article) will be in 2010. A pretty big leap up from the 8-core CPUs from the start of '09.

a postage-stamp sized chunk of silicon is a lot.
Remember that the size of your processor is mostly for the connections. The actual silicon part is about the size of a pinkie-nail.

This will mean an extremely high price.

Also, will software have to be specially coded to take advantage of the power offered?

This other tech website has the same story too, but also includes plenty of colorful detailed diagrams of the 48 core chip: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=825

No, Hunter. As far as I have found out, there is no need for programs to be especially made for it.

I hate this progress. Really. It's too fast in the last years.

Well. We still lack good support for 64 bit systems. We got 128 coming up, and now so many cores. About time the OS dev's kick it up a notch and give us full support.

They'll go from 8 to 16 cores then 16 to 32 and then finally 32 to 48 and make more money in the process probably, which would mean we won't see it for another three years.
