My band Broken Silence went into the studio yesterday for the first time to record a song, was sort of like a test run to see how things work out.

Once a few minor problems were sorted out with the mixing desk, tracking began! It really shows you how important it is to practice to a metronome, because it isn't easy!

I can honestly say that I really enjoyed it, it was a slow start but towards the end of the day we were getting some really nice stuff done, totally impressed with how it came out considering it's our first song, all I have to do now is mix it so it sounds somewhat professional!

Myspace with the song will go up in a few days, I want to get the final mix done for the song so we have something to put on it.

I hope this band goes far, we all loved it!

Hey livewire, as a "studio veteran" (not really, but kinda) i just want to tell you to listen closely to every single instrument on every single track you record. If it isnt 100% to your liking, i mean if it isnt PERFECT, go back and re-record it or punch into the mistake.
ANd before you master it, get a rough mix of the track and listen to it 10 or 20 times a day. You WILL find stuff that you want to fix once the novelty wears off. You're spending money on this. Your money. You dont want to have a mastered track that you arent 100% proud of.

Just a little warning, because my band fell into this hole in our first 3 times in the studio.

Anyway, congrats on getting into the studio! That's awesome, i wish you and your band good luck, and i wanna hear those tracks!

Haha Tetsu0 is right. You should do that.

Grats on getting recordings done! I don't know what your band does, but I'll be willing to listen to it to find out :P

Haha, thanks for that info Tetsu, that's some helpful stuff, but we're not paying! We're all too poor to go into a studio with a professional producer, that stuff can cost up to a thousand!

I've already tracked the song, I'm mixing it myself from all the things I've learned from 2 years of studying music technology, I think I'm getting pretty good at it now, I'm panning my overheads of the drums left and right for a sterio field, panning my toms relative to where I was sitting when tracking them, getting a nice click but with some body to the kick too.

The only problem I have is that occasionally I'll struggle to keep something loud enough in the mix, for example if I add a click onto the kick, it will drown out the snare, so I almost have to start again with mixing the two!

All the final mixes I do with the monitors sound good, but when I bounce them to .mp3 they always come out to bassy, which is irritating, but adding some high-end into the mix will cause it to clip. These are some minor problems I have.

Mixing and mastering is literally like doing your own little project which requires a shitload of work and time.
