Strider StriderTuned to a dead channel.
Irony sucks.

A massive lightning storm was coming my way last night, probably the craziest one I've ever seen. I powered down all my electronics and turned them off at the wall, you know the drill. Waited the storm out, turned them back on, and now my LCD TV appears to be fried. It's connected through a surge board, and wasn't even on at the time of the storm. It looks like the act of turning it back ON fried it (static build up?), and it didn't even trip the surge board or damage the other electronics hooked up to it.

That's what it looks like at this stage anyway. Gonna' test a few ideas I've found on the interwebs, but it looks like it's time to dig out my warranty forms, wherever the hell they are.

I loved this TV. :<

I thought you had to unplug the stuff from the wall as well.

Yeah, that's what we usually do with our TV stuff.

Perhaps. At any rate the surge board would have/should have tripped. Nothing else went down, and the fact that it happened after the storm had passed is aggrivating.

god that sucks. Sometimes no matter how hard you try to prevent/foresee trouble, shit still goes horribly bad..

Murphy's law will fuck you..

Maybe he should have prepared for... Unforseen Consequences.

The surge protector may have some sort of compensation associated with it, as most have a certain warranty. Look into that, too.

Well that's not as bad as having your house struck by lightning... more so when your house starts showing signs of electrical damage years down the road...

yeah, and surge protectors by themselves aren't as benign as you may think. I once plugged my 1-plug surge protecor in the wall while i was waiting to get my oil changed, and the surge protector immediately started on fire and blew out that entire circuit! (the oil change manager was NOT pleased with me)

I didn't even think surge protectors were capable of that?!

Well the warranty of the TV manufacturer doesn't cover "accidental power surges", so that's ruled out. I'll be looking into the surge board warranty, like Luke suggested, even though the circumstances are a little iffy.

I might take it to a local TV repair shop first, just to find out exactly what the problem is and how much it'll cost me. Googling my TV's symptoms tells me it's a faulty mainboard, which is around $400 for a new one and installation. I can live with that. If it turns out to be the screen itself it could go up to around a grand for repairs, which makes me a sad little Strider.

Captain Terror: crazy!
