I have 8 GB of RAM now, and it's a bit excessive for today's standard (but I only spent $100 total for my current DDR2 memory almost two years ago).
In another year, you can't seriously say that 8 GB is too much. A standard gaming machine today has 4-6 GB of memory. I am confident that in a year, 8 GB would be standard, and there will be applications and games that would require that much memory to run optimally.
I still remember the day when 1 MB seemed excessive.

Luke, 4GB isn't THAT much you know. I'm considering buying myself 4 more gigs (having 4right now) since I'm usually at 3.5-5GB usage, some of it paged of course. And satchmo, damn everything's so cheap for you there. I'd pay like 1.5-2 times more for everything if I bought it here.

satch, care to...'donate' your old rig to say... one of us? (Me?) Isnt donating considered a tax deduction as well? Kidding really. But dont you get good karma for donating stuff?
or maybe the compo winner gets your old rig? eh? eh?
I'll stop now. I'm just jealous because you have a sweet setup.

yeah the 860 is faster than the core i7-920, but the 920 uses tri-channel memory with it, which in your case, you'll have 8gigs of ram anyway, so yeah, good setup I'd say.
Oh another thing the 470, and the radeon 5870, the temps and power consuptions, are a little higher with the 470, but they both can handle DX11 for the latest games.. but then again, its mainly the price difference your looking at.. specs are:
I got my current computer in 2005 and I don't intend to buy a new one until at least 2015.
Your amount of RAM is completely unnecessary, honestly. No games or programs will ever make use of it.
Also, go for a better motherboard. It's not high end enough for that budget.

I either pay the money to the government or I buy myself a new computer.

@SpaG: Wait, what? I have 1.5GB! Are you suggesting I ALREADY NEED TO UPGRADE my system?!?! It's only 5 years old!

It's Newegg.
I get my computer parts only from Newegg. They have the best service and most of the times the best deals.
