satchmo satchmo“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. -- Samuel Beckett”
I am almost through playing Crysis, and I found that it's a very difficult game, even more difficult than the original Far Cry.

The part that I had to save Prophet from freezing to death and the part that I had to fly the chopper was nearly impossible. I think I finally made it after twenty attempts.

A game should never be that difficult. It takes the fun out of playing the game. I was really getting frustrated, and this is coming from a guy who is very used to playing these shooting games.

i agree, games that are too hard suck all the fun out of it (same with puzzles whose solution makes no logical sense).

Lol, I suppose when they were designing the game, they were aiming for a very skilled audience with the best possible computers.

Yeah, the game is pretty awfully balanced in places. I remember having a lot of trouble with the first team of NK Nano-suited soldiers, when they sneak up on you in the grave yard.

Frustrating.

I didn't even realise those Nano guys were my enemies at first. I think it glitched or something cause I walked up to them and they stared for a bit before ripping me with bullets.

Oh and avoid the second game. Shorter than HL2EP1.

Half-Life 2 is quite balanced when it comes to difficulty. I applaud Valve for their playtest effort.

Just like Far Cry, Crysis is quite glitchy when it comes to gameplay.

It's not supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be a challenge. That's the point. I see the first nanosuit soldier encounter as a boss encounter, it stands out from the rest, both in difficulity and tactically as you need to develop a whole new tactic to take them down, still I beat it on my first attempt at the hardest difficulity.

Personally, I didn't have problem with the first wave of nanosuit Koreans.

But what I was talking about was the "Ascension" level. It was nearly impossible to control the thing while dodging fires and rockets from those alien squid-looking thing. There's no place to hide from their fire, and they move much faster than the transport plane. I was basically sitting duck in the sky.

I don't mind a little challenge, but more than twenty tries is just excessive.

Poor ladies who only played half-life on easy difficulty entering the men fields of Crysis ;D.
Nah, to be honest, I enjoyed Crysis a lot, but I think in some places it's just too difficult. Too much save and load :).

The tank battle was challenging. I figured out that the best way to beat the tanks was to get out of the tank and snipe the enemies from behind the line.

Being inside a tank was an easy target for the Korean soldiers carrying missile launchers, and they get you from very far away.

When I think difficulty, a game should either be balanced, for have difficulty levels that are actually made as said. Like Ninja Gaiden 2, played e-z mode and that was the hardest shit ever, and stupid.

Mass Effect 2 is pretty balanced as far as how difficulty is measured, Half-Life series was too. Etc.

If a game wants to be challenging, it should at least be consistent with it. Set you straight from the start so you know what you're in for.

For a game to be a cakewalk most of the time, then randomly dump you into hopeless situations... it just screams poor design.

The cakewalk is a lie

Well, I think it's fine to have variation in difficulty.

For us veteran gamers, we all expect a boss fight to be more challenging than a regular confrontation. Every shooter game has boss fights and mini-boss fights.

Even Half-Life and Half-Life 2 have them. You expect that a confrontation with a strider or antlion queen to be tougher than a combine soldier or a zombie.

But I agree, it shouldn't be impossibly hard. At all time, the player should never feel frustrated.

Frustration should be available when expected though. I started playing Mass Effect 2 on Insanity. The name right there should explain shit, insane. Some parts are, some aren't. I get frustrated at some points, and that's how I expected it to be, harder than Hardcore, Hard, Medium, Easy, etc.

Now I remember Doom series, 1/2/3, particularly 3... e-z mode was not so easy-mode, never even tried to play nightmare mode...

Oh, by e-z you mean easy? LOL at you Americans and your confusing name for the letter Z.

Well, if anyone wants to play a game on "insanity" or "nightmare", you shouldn't complain.

Personally, I have never tried to play a game on a difficulty level more than "hard". I almost always play a game on the normal difficulty level.

So do I. I'm just saying most games with some of those higher difficulties are harder at the lower ones already. When I play Insanity I get what I expect.

Now Splinter Cell conviction, I played through it twice on the top difficulty and failed to be impressed by the challenge. Fun game, not hard enough though.

Odd, i played through the game in one go, Delta, occasionally dying due to not thinking things through very carefully, and of course when i just don't wanna play the game at all and just explore on my own or do stupid things just to see the outcome.
