Archie ArchieGoodbye Moonmen
So Iowa appears to be the first major campaign spot in deciding the republican candidate for the 2012 American election, yes?

As a mere foreign non-American I could be totally wrong, but it almost seems like all three major candidates - Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney - are more interested in preventing gays and foreigners from living happily in America than, say, deciding what action to take about the economic crisis or how they'd settle tensions with Russia, NoKo and China.

I'm sure I must be mistaken, because in this day and age it would be insanity to be corner-stoning a presidential campaign on evangelical nonsense, wouldn't it. That'd be ridiculous of me to think, wouldn't it. Arguably the most powerful country in the world bickering over fags and blacks rather than the 99% protests or NoKo's refusal to stop their nuclear armament program. That'd be mental of me to think.

Thank god I've probably just got my facts wrong.

I agree with what you're saying and I really wished we could have these discussions without it turning into complete elitist drivel, but come on... You know this is gonna cause a shitstorm, politics and the internet don't mix.

Archie, I can't possibly conceive how your views are SO SKEWED. You must look at the BIG PICTURE, but your views must be so distorted that you can't tell left from right. I am sorry that you do not agree with America.

Where's Tito when you need him to read Stu's post, not realise it's sarcasm, then agree with it?

Illegal immigration has been a pretty big problem in the US for decades. Politicians love to tackle that issue because it's one of the most widely recognized, easily understood problems.
It surely doesn't take precedence over keeping the economy intact, but it's worth mentioning in case you didn't know.

Americans get the choice to vote or not to vote. I wouldnt take my job seriously if i knew a percentage of my audience didnt actually care about what i said.

I hate anyone who is anti-gay, or anti-not white/american. Most of the republican candidates look and sound retarded, and incredibly closed minded. Micheal Bachman I believe told people that the huge earthquake awhile back was because god was mad we let gays get married in New York. Most of them are really into religion, while yea, I'm (Agnostic)Christian, I would never let that effect my dealings while leading a country full of other religions, that's not fair to them. Republicans are stupid, and so are Democrats, and it will always be that way. I'm moving to Canada.

EDIT: also, for what Nine said, we do have a choice to vote or not if we are over 18, and that's another thing that is (in my opinion) helping our downfall, to many people don't care enough to vote, or can't afford the time because of work. So while the majority might want someone else, the ones that do vote usually vote for the stupidest person. Then get all whiny about how our leader sucks, when the only people we can blame for them being in office is ourselves. But of course most Americans are stubborn as fuck, and don't like to take responsibility for their fucking actions.

Unfortunately nobody can do anything about it. If there's only idiots running for president, than an idiot will get elected. One can decide to not vote, but then there's no control over which idiot is chosen.
Oh and then we get to watch the candidates rip each other apart in those immature campaign ads.

I second the "fuck politics"

I've been keeping an eye on the candidates and I can't say that I'm surpised. USA elected Bush TWICE, what did you expect?
I had some hope when they elected Obama, but really Obama was a horrible president who just further proved that USA isn't run by it's goverment, but by Wall Street and the banks. The whole nation is going down the toilet, and has been for the past 20 years.

Ron Paul would be the best choice if one had to chose from those three IMO. He's fucking nuts, but at least slightly better than the other two.

yes we in Australia have to vote, you get fined and all sorts of stuff if you dont vote.

I was reading, a few years ago on a forum (maybe this one?) a guy saying that the majority of the American people do/did not like Bush (this was when he was in power) and i thought this was a bit odd, that they didnt agree with who was in power, even though they didnt vote anyway.

"yes we in Australia have to vote, you get fined and all sorts of stuff if you dont vote."

If you don't like any of the candidates, why should you vote? Why be forced to choose the lesser of two evils? That's fucked up.

Republicans are close-minded, rich, selfish pricks who love only one thing--their money.

Who said America is the most powerful nation in the world? That has not been the case for a decade.

China has eclipsed America a while back. The era of a power United States is over.

I'd rather try to make Ron Paul president than sit and do nothing and have Rick Perry as president knowing I could have done something about it.
At least Ron Paul makes a few points that makes sense. At least he wants to end the wars, and at least he wants to end the federal reserve (sadly none of them are probably gonna happen, but one could always hope). But he's still a dumbass "pro-life" creationist.

But I'm not an American so I'm not voting.
Commented 12 years ago2012-01-04 11:23:35 UTC Comment #45473
What I don't get is why Americans keep voting for either of these parties. How can you expect sane politics when the same two parties get re-elected year after year?

Commented 12 years ago2012-01-04 11:38:47 UTC Comment #45459
In Sweden? 18.

Potatis: The only candidates which gets economic funding for their campaigns are those who favours the coorporate machine. Without a proper campaign it's really hard to get noticed, so the good ones are left in the shadow.
And which candidates favours the coorporate machine? Those who wants more war and less rights for the people.
Commented 12 years ago2012-01-04 12:57:58 UTC Comment #45462
srry: It's pretty much guaranteed that one of the two big parties makes it in the top job, but you can always vote for the independent parties for your local seat. Or them crazy Greens. There's about 5 out of the 80 or so seats currently in Australia that are not one of the two big parties.

That said, our politics is just as fucked up as America's, just on a smaller scale. They're using ammo such as "what to do with illegal immigrants" and "should gay marriage be allowed" (and other things with equally obvious solutions) to sway the mouth-breathing masses one way or the other.

In reality it's just a bunch of old geezers who have no idea how the modern world works getting way too much power and making stupid decisions that help nobody but themselves.

Actually, it sounds a lot like my job!

(For the record, the obvious solution for the immigrants is to give them a choice: go back to where you came from, or your boat will be shot out of the water. And I'm shocked that people are still debating gay marriage. Sigh.)
Commented 12 years ago2012-01-05 00:08:33 UTC Comment #45467
Why are you shocked that people are still debating gay marriage? At least in America, it's a hotly debated issue, and people have strong opinions about it which are largely based on their own sense of morality - and as everybody knows, legislating morality is a losing battle. Somebody's always going to end up with their feelings hurt. The answer might seem obvious to you and me, but I'm sure the opposite answer would seem just as obvious to somebody else.
Commented 12 years ago2012-01-05 02:08:50 UTC Comment #45463
Well, I guess more shocked in that I think it's shocking (as in slang for "terrible") rather than shocked in that I'm surprised by it.

@srry

well, if you dont like any of the parties you dont tick them really... you can, if you really like, just draw smiley faces on the paper and submit it, just as long as you registered your name to have voted, it doesnt matter what you write on the paper

I think the debate on gay marriage is the dumbest fucking thing, let the gays get married, who gives a shit, not like it effects your life in anyway(unless your gay, and get married).

It's complete bullshit, "In reality it's just a bunch of old geezers who have no idea how the modern world works getting way too much power and making stupid decisions that help nobody but themselves." This. This is what it all comes down to.

And in America, the whole helping themselves is What I believe is the biggest part, when shit goes through the House of Representatives here in America, they don't represent the people, they represent who ever gave them the most donations.

Ok Time for a Female Perspective (obviously this is Lyssa..yet again, and if first off you are wondering why I don't just get my own account on here Rim would probably make me start playing Half Life and Team Fortress and such, and I might be good at it and pwn you all :P so until then, I hi-jack his with his permission)

first off I live with a Vietnam Veteran with 2 purple hearts (got shot in the neck and leg) and was a Tank commander and had a complete military career. He is a HARD CORE Conservative Republican. He watches O'Riley factor every night as well as a sleuth of other political shows.

My mom is a Democrat, she doesn't really know a lot of political stuff, but she knows what she wants and what she doesn't

I myself am somewhere in the middle. And yes Election years are oodles of Fun at my house, just ask Rimmy

Anyway, ok here is the thing.
I do NOT want some saggy dusty nut sack in charge of what I can and cannot do with my body. I love Rim and all, but if you all think I wan another one of him you crazy. or worse another one of me. I also have some genetic illness (see brain surgery) that would be passed on to a child. So I am pro choice. And that is the thing, unless these MEN are gonna carry the child, birth the child, breastfeed the child stay home and raise said child, then they do NOT get a say. Their part in even MAKING a child is very small. So small in fact that women can have babies without men.
Do I think that there should be SOME control on abortions, yes.
such as using it for Birth control...no that is just ignorant. Using it to try and get a desired sex of the child, aka aborting all female children in hopes of getting a male child. That is just ..ugh yuck.

But if a 13 year old girl who was molested by her father is now pregnant, I want her to be able to have the CHANCE not just the CHOICE of having that situation amended in the safest way possible for her. As if she hasn't been through enough ya know?
Or the mother who would die if the pregnancy were not terminated, or worse a child who is born with Harlequin Syndrome. Look it up, it's nasty.

There are a LOT of reasons to be pro choice, but honestly I don't think any being with a penis should be allowed to have ANY say in what I or any other woman does with my vagina thank you very much.

Gay marriage, if stupid assed people like Britney spears can get married, and have it annulled in 24 hours, OR get married, have kids, go crazy then have her kids taken away, then yeah we should let gay couples get married. cause saying someone can;t be with someone the love, well the tables should be turned and divorce should be made illegal and make people have to live with the choices they have made. that sounds fair to me. Love for all or misery for all.

immigration.
Ok here is the problem with that. We have people immigrating to the country illegally THEN getting on welfare and medicaid and basically getting the money that the American citizens pay into the Social Security system go to someone who has not paid a cent. They are given free health care, food stamps , and money without lifting a finger, and in some cases without even learning English. You wanna be a part of this country, do it right, take the damned citizenship test, pay taxes, pay into the social security system. Because people who are illegal immigrants are getting it and people who pay taxes into the system who are legitimately in need don;t get shit. you all know I had brain surgery, and guess what, I worked, I paid taxes, and it took 3 years for me to get a nickle form the government to help me out. so how is that fair at ALL. for serious.

I cannot STAND how this country is run. At all. I do vote. I am pretty much kicked out if I don't (refer to super political step-father) and I take the time to really look at the candidates and see which is the lesser of two evils. I have not made my decision yet, but once they pair off into sets of two and the election gets closer, I usually sit my happy ass down and do research. See who is the least crazy of them all, because at this point I know our nation is doomed. I know this, I mean as Archie pointed out the complete and utter idiocy of the petty pointless squabbles that are the front running debates of this campaign....ugh...

So there is my 2c as a female.

TL;DR My Vagina, my choice, all can marry or none can divorce, all play and no work makes you a rich immigrant, and all work and no help, makes you a screwed citizen.

thanks for reading the rant.
