Archie ArchieGoodbye Moonmen
Edited yet again with Day 4. You won't see much of Archie over this week because I am currently working as 1st AC on a high-budget production being filmed in a full studio lot (Scotland's equivalent of Hollywood.)
It's a horror film, so there are loads of night shots and as such the hours are crazy. Some days I'll be sleeping at the studio.
I'll be taking photos every day.

It's so surreal. There's an entire fictional Glasgow street built here. It looks totally believably until you go in the houses and just find plywood.

Here's one of the studio buildings. There are six of them and each one has anywhere up to 30 different "room" locations inside. From pubs to bedsits.

Let me know what you want to see in the comments. I have not had to sign an NDA (this is the first production I've worked on since I started making money in this industry that I can show you everything).

Also, we're shooting in 4.5k. HD is 1080. An xbox360 is 720. 4.5 thousand.

I was really busy today so I didn't get a spare moment to go around other departments, sorry Captain Terror.
More tomorrow.

DAY 3!

Crazy busy today. We were behind schedule due to heavy rain, so I've been non-stop for about 10 hours. So tired ;_;

It's so much easier to work in rooms without ceilings.

This little thing was awesome. Basically a jet engine to rapidly heat the room. Literally.

It wouldn't be a horror film without a mad lassie cutting up a paint canvas.

Big 300mm lens on.

This was a rehearsal. The mat had to be removed for the take. I do not envy this guy having to lie in rainwater in temperatures of around -2 C.

There's LOADS of that, mate. Horror film! Lots of gore :D

I'll do my best, but it's a different department so I don't know what sort of access I'll have.

Love the street shots, absolutely convincing. Do those buildings really have brick/stone siding or just more really convicingly painted wood? The cobble road looks great and old.

Just nitpicking, but a few windows should be lit inside! If only one or two, for added realism. There's always someone that leaves a light on at night.

I'd love to visit such installation, it's a shame I'm probably not allowed in :P

Just wondering, will you be sleeping in indoor bedroom sets? heh heh.

What I'd like to see:
  • More shots of the facility and its extents.
  • Inside views of indoor sets.
  • Are the electrical installations carefully planned and installed or as ad-hoc as can be?
  • Some minute detail that caught your eye. Could be anything - an old phone, half washed dishes, an old sock under a bed in a bedroom set, a lovely set grandma-like dining room... anything really.
  • The inner workings or behind-the-scenes of something mechanical/electrical that looks like the real deal but is only carefully designed to LOOK like it without actually being it.
  • More shots of that good looking blonde. :P

That set is awesome. I want one. If I ever get a lair, it will have a room like that set. Just give us any information you feel is worth sharing. (spoilers not included)

Hooking up with any of the chicks? Didn't see anyone else mention it. Archie is Scottish, movies and television have taught me to expect this from you people.

"Do those buildings really have brick/stone siding or just more really convicingly painted wood?"
There's about an inch of actual stonework on top of a wooden skeleton to make sure texture and reflectivity are correct.

"a few windows should be lit inside"
There were. Lighting wasn't even close to final when I took the street photos. Just for you technogeeks, the really bright one next to The Tall Ship pub is a 7000W.

"will you be sleeping in indoor bedroom sets"
I'll be grabbing a few hours wherever I can lie down. Literally.

"Hooking up with any of the chicks?"
I'm currently already seeing a girl, so no.

Congratulations!

I can easily tell that those environments are fake. They look just too artistic - too perfectly dirty.

"I can easily tell that those environments are fake. They look just too artistic - too perfectly dirty."

I dunno. Sounds like a spot on description of Glasgow to me.

You're totally right. I'll go tell the BBC art department that the set they've been working on and using for ~10 years isn't up to Bruce's standards.

Too tired to update tonight, guys, but I got some great photos.

Hrm bruce ;
I've been to glasgae plenty of times and I was shocked when archie said it was fake - I doubt you could easily tell it was a fake environment.

I kind of see what Bruce means. Although I don't know much about Glasgow, while I've been there once I'm mostly basing that off the buildings around here, which are of the same style. The corners of the buildings are too squared, the ones here tend to be somewhat chipped. Maybe they're just older or something.

It's a night shoot with 7k bulbs. Anywhere would look slightly surreal.
