I've a slight confession to make. I've no idea if Archie knows of this place , but a good few years ago this shop , the "Jolly Rodger" managed to break about every piracy law ever. The guy literally just bought games , bypassed their security systems , and then sold them for a much lower price.

My confession is that this is how I acquired my first copy of Half-Life , along with opposing force and a shit ton of maps. At the time I was only about 8 so I didn't give a shit , but then some time ago - when Steam started to become prevalent - I decided I'd go out and genuinely buy the game. When I activated the game , I'd also managed to get Opposing force and Blue shift with it as well! Rewarding me for being a genuine customer for once!

I just had to give money to Valve for what they've done!

My first copy of Half-Life was a copied CD given to me by a friend. I justified it to myself with the thought that if I ever saw it in a shop I would buy it, and so it wasn't piracy. Then when I heard about Steam I had no way of buying it. Then I won a Scotch and Coffee competition and I finally got a legitimate copy.

I bought my first HL on a flea market in 1999. It had its CD Key written on a piece of marlboro cigarettes pack cardboard.

Since than it has been my most favorite game ever.

I downloaded a pirated version 5 years ago, but I have since bought it on steam.

Pretty much all the games I've played since my very first ones in ~1996 until 2005-2006 were pirated in one way or another. Original titles were far too expensive for me to afford as a child/teen. Most of my early maps/mods were built on pirated CS/HL versions.

Doubt I would've gotten anywhere in game dev if it wasn't for flea markets or pirate retailers like that, really. I just wouldn't have had the access to those critical games in my early days that have had such a huge influence on me.

And now thanks to Steam, I'm returning the favour and buying the majority of the stuff I've pirated in the old days.

Bought HL1 at a computer fair in 1999. I didn't know it was out but I had seem some of the gameplay trailers for it from E3 1998. Got it on steam now but the WON CD still works. It's got Worldcraft 2.1 on it and everything. :P
