Watched all 13 episodes of Elfen Lied today. I have to say, despite what Soup Miner thought of it back in '09, I thought it was a pretty good series. Very, very graphic at times, and a lot of characters were, well, complete and total scumbags, but I very much enjoyed the issues of morality and humanity/"what is a person". (Which I always do)

Also, Soup, I know this is 5 years late, but a couple things;
"Also "they are born to kill humans" is a fucking lame explanation for superhumans that go on insane killing sprees."
IMO, that's simply an excuse used by the scientists to justify what they're doing. [Ironic, considering what's happening at the top.] Personally, I think the truth is simply what you suggested would be a better explanation; Psychological issues. If you're mistreated for your entire life for being a bit different, you gonna snap and kill someone. Everyone.
"Dead should mean dead"
Keep in mind you never actually see the outcome of that fight, though. She appears to gets the crap beaten shot out of her, but it's possible she won out or escaped in the end.

Anyway, pretty good anime, if one that had to be cut down a lot from the manga (so I've heard) to fit into the series. If you like anime or philosophical discussions, (or both) I'd recommend it, assuming you're 18 or older; There is quite a lot of nudity, graphic violence, language, and mature subject matter.

I tried watching it, got to about ep 6 and didn't continue. Don't know why people like it, it had unnecessary over the top gore and too many perverted scenes that just turned me off from it, and the story wasn't that interesting to that point to begin with.

It's not for everyone, true. But if the plot is interesting enough from the beginning to someone to put up with the gore, nudity, squickyness, (Is that a word? Whatever. Is now.) they'll find a worthwhile show.
It all depends on your tastes in story and how much/what you're willing to put up with.

"Keep in mind you never actually see the outcome of that fight, though."
We actually get to see a silhouette of Lucy Kouta's front door after the end credits, so we know she lives. I didn't agree with that last scene because Lucy's death was supposed to provide closure; that closure is moot because she didn't actually die. It seems more like they just didn't want to upset viewers who'd grown attached to Lucy.

I've since read the manga. I think the anime wasn't so well executed because the producers really didn't compensate for the plot points that had to be cut or altered(as is often the case with film adaptations).
Also, Elfen Lied wasn't actually finished when they adapted it into an anime. The manga goes in a completely different direction.

Edit: All 13 episodes in one sitting? You must have been really engaged :3

"*Stuff in Spoiler tags*"

I suppose that you have a point with the whole 'closure' thing. I didn't really see closure in that though, personally. ...Perhaps I'm one of the ones who got attached to her. :P Would have liked to see a way for peaceful co-habitation, though.

"I've since read the manga. ... goes in a completely different direction."

Haven't had a chance to flip through the manga. The Anime'll probably seem less well-executed once I do. There were a few plotholes/unanswered questions still, I expect since they only got a single season to do the series. (though I may have had a peek at the wiki afterwards)

"You must have been really engaged :3"

Yeah, I get that way. When I like something, I tend to like it a lot.
(Though In the interest of full disclosure, I may have taken short breaks for eating and trips to the water closet)
