StrikerI forgot to check the oil pressure

I visited a friend who has a 3D printer. He offered to demonstrate me how it works, and told me to think of something to print.
As 3D printing takes a lot of time(sometimes hours) when you have complex shapes, I figured out fast what to print:

It's 4cm in diamater and took 20 minutes.

3D printers look like they'd be fun to have, but the truth is I can't think of a single use to justify the expense.

As far as I know Stu, the technology was developed for rapid prototyping of designs. So you can make a part and see if it does what it's supposed to in less than a day, as opposed to having to make it by traditional means. The recent idea of using 3D printed parts as finished components isn't really what they were designed for, as the printed parts tend to not be as strong as parts injection moulded or machined out of the same material.

That being said, for small, cheap, one-off components they are pretty useful. As an example within the next few weeks I'm going to have to get some parts printed which will be used in a model aircraft.
I'm going to have to get test pieces printed off next week to see what glues are the best as well.
