in SAME MAX_PATCHES PROBLEM. NEED HELP Post #56422
Exceeded MAX_PATCHES

When hlrad runs, it takes all the visible faces in the game, and divides them into sections called patches. These patches are the textures used as the lightmaps for the world. There is a hard limit of 65535 patches that hlrad can deal with. By default, a 64x64 game unit chunk of space is the size of one patch. If the texture scaling (not texture size) is larger or smaller, it will directly affect the lightmap size as well. This means a texture with scale of 2, will have at best 1/4th as many patches as a texture with a scale of 1.

Putting a 'box' around the level to protect from leaks is the most commmon cause of this error, beyond excessively large maps. The box causes vis to keep the faces on the outside which would normally be thrown away. These faces are then required to have lightmaps. Worst case, is that putting a box around the level will usually cause an extra 40-80% more lightmaps to be created than necessary.

Barring having a box, the other cause is large maps. The fixes are varied but can only help so far.
Remove any "box" from around your level and fight the leak leak leak war the right way.
If you have not boxed in your level, then the #1 fix is running HLRAD with the -sparse flag - but compile will be slower.
Using -chop values larger than the default 64 for hlrad will cause the light patches to be larger. However, for values larger than around 96 the map's lights start looking bad, and will more prominently show the 'staircase' effect on shadows.
Using a larger scale on large textures (dirt, rock walls, concrete) will help those large surfaces consume fewer patches for lighting.

I can't remember right now, but I think that the third person mode needs at least the latest WON version of Half-Life to work well.

BTW, Half-Life can't handle really large maps too well. Depending on how big it is will determine whether or not you need to make it smaller.

Yes and no.

If you're using pure Half-Life then no, you would need to code. However, some talented mappers have created some drivable vehicles in Spirit of Half-Life (http://spirit.valve-erc.com/) if you're really desperate.

I wouldn't really suggest using drivable vehicles as they don't really do that good a job. The ones in CS are particularly buggy.

You can turn down the amount of Undo levels in the Options. This problem sounds more like a computer problem to me. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Dlt and see what's sucking up RAM as this is probably the likely suspect. For the wads, load them in, hit Apply, then ok, exit Hammer and open it again. If this doesn't work, check for errors on you Hard Disk(s), check for viruses, increase the virtual memory and check for other crap. If all fails, format. :P

That's a good point Mephs. The only excuses that I see fit to deny a member using correct grammer are:

1.) English is not their natural language
2.) They are uneducated.

If you do not fall into any of these reasons then shame on you! Take the time to type out your questions and comments correctly. It'll do you good, trust me! ;)

Zoner's tools are a substitute for the old 'qrad', 'qbsp', 'vis' & 'qcsg'. All you have to do is specify Zoner's tools in the Hammer setup instead of the other ones.

You need hammer 3.5 beta
He's got that already. Remember to get the FGD and to unpack the models. What type of Half-Life do you have, Retail or Steam?

RETAIL: You need a program like Pak Explorer which will 'unzip' the 'pak0.pak' file.
STEAM: As Rabid said, you need GFCScape to 'unzip' the 'GCF' files.

Make sure that you are using the new FGD in Hammer and it should work.

My suggestion: when you save the sprites, save them directly over the old ones. HOWEVER! The default HUD will now be gone. To get it back, you'd probably need to extract the default sprites again.

Valve models look 'cartoonish' because dedicated people have decided to push the engine to its limit and create better models. I'm guessing Valve had no idea it could use those models when Half-Life was created.
