Malle: I remember u being twatish to me when we first met, because I misunderstood your problem, so maybe tone down the dickishness a bit? :P

I feel like u and stojkens are very similar mappers, so I thought when I referred him to you for help, you'd become fast friends.. did you show him your awesome climbing map?

Advice is a tricky thing, and just because it's different from someone else(even from somebody you consider an expert), it still doesnt make it wrong ;)

The only way you can know if advice is good or not is to test it, and everyone has their own methods, so try to keep an open mind!

W00tski! =P

I must say, it is much more difficult to pick a song out of the blue, rather than choose from a collection or whatever..

A lot of songs i'd like to do are directly used in movie scenes, so i can't help but think of the movie as the inspiration and not the music.. There are a couple of movie themes i'd definitely like to do though :)

Alternatively Stojke:
1. Select the entire map.
2. Ctrl+deselct the brushes you want to export, and delete the rest.
3."Save As" vmf/rmf to a new mapname.
4. Doneski =)

Then yes, if you wanted to continue on the original map, you'd have to re-open the original vmf/rmf.

(idk if hammer makes a new tab when you "save as", but i don't think it does)

Unless there are any objections, shall we start right now?

Map-A-Song MiniContest Rules
1. Build a map for any valve game/engine to a piece of music. Try to make your map reflect the song in anyway you can think of. (this could be a whole functional map, or just a small scene, you decide)
2. Multiple entries are aloud.
3. Judging by community voting.
4. Prize by Prize pool. Current prize kitty: $25. (We will accept donations to the prize kitty in the form of cash/games and mystery gifts)
5. Deadline is when a month has passed and no new entries have been recieved, or, whatever we deem it should be by community voting.

Confirmed Contestants
Malle
Instant Mix
Captain Terror

Hopefully we will gain more entrants down the road. Also, there is no minimum entry requirement, i.e., i will pay out the prize(s) even if only one entry is submitted.

So if you are in, get mapping! =)

You can hit Shift+A to toggle the Texture Properties window, just like in regular Hammer. (i kinda miss the little x to close too, even though i don't use it) :)

Texture Properties Bug
When you select a texture from the texture browser and try to apply it(left-clicking), it doesn't seem to work; you have to hit Apply button to select it?

I would recommend just making it behave like normal hammer. Also, same thing when i try to select a recent texture from the little sidebar, it should become my current or "active" texture, yes?(it doesn't)

Stojke/Instant: That RA music really brings back memories, great stuff! I never played Sonic nor Ristar, but the music is very intriguing and would sure be fun to map to. (i'm digging the Marley too listening to a playlist right now) =)

I'm in also.
Still trying to choose a song. Most of the songs i want to do would include animation sequences, so i'm gonna try to pick something more suitable for a map ;)

Hammer has the advantage of being very easy to use. If you are looking for a Hammer alternative, you may have noticed the Sledge discussion.

Eventually, Sledge will support source games, but for now, CSGO SDK is the only editor i'm aware of.

Very intriguing Malle! i can think of some other songs too that would make good train maps. =)

So, shall we?
It seems most people want to choose their own song, so that's what we should do.

So if you are in, simply post "I'm in" or whatever, and if you like, what song you are gonna do =)

Rules are listed in the first post, with the only change we are picking our own piece of music to map to.

Again, winners will be selected by community voting and prizes will be doled out from the prize pool. (i will start the prize kitty with $25, redeemable through paypal or steam gift).

Besides money and games, i'd like to capitalize on Stojken's idea, i.e., we will be accepting original 2d/3d digital artworks as gifts to add to the prize pool!

Maybe keep these gifts these to yourself until the judging is done, so they will be a suprise to the winner? If you have completed a digital piece of art you plan to donate, feel free to say so in the thread and we'll add it to the prize pool, e.g. Mystery gift #7 by Stojke.

Possible ideas for gifts
  • trophies or prize medalions
  • cake/pie/muffins or other sweets =P
  • anything you can think of that conveys giftyness ;)

Sledge feature request: optional tool sounds
I already know you aren't going to like this, but how about add optional tool sounds, e.g.:
block tool will make hammering wood sound(think AOE)
clip tool will make a circular saw or table saw winding down.
vm tool, idk, maybe a welder?
It might be awesome, and it might be really annoying too. idk maybe just something to think about(i know you have bigger problems to figure out right now)

Good point!

I work better creatively if i have restrictions(more with less sort of deal), but i understand not everyone works that way. Maybe a poll?

Poll - Do you prefer this contest with more or less restrictions?

If people choose more restriction, we could think about further defining it as say, map a funny song or map an inspirational piece, and like that..

With less restriction, we can keep it wide open and people can pursue their tastes, as you intimated.

Whatever the group wants to go with i'm down ;)

Stojkens wins the award for weirdest song/video ever, LOL! =)

My choice would be to choose from a list of songs previously laid out, but that's just me. We could make suggestion(s) for music to be used in the thread, and from there, we can draw 5-10 songs for the "music pool" for the contest.

OR, we can leave it wide open like Cstriker is saying, and let the author to decide what track or tracks to use. (i can see some interesting ideas here, like mapping an entire album for one, or a playlist of kick-ass songs)

Question
Do you-all think the music used as your inspiration should be played/playing in the actual map, or just referenced in the title/description or something?

Hey, you know you can open vmf natively in Sledge, right?

The above pic is more of what i was trying for originally, i.e., more similar to the original hammer icon.

Oddly, this WIP also has the beginnings of a functional fy map--notice players in some of the shots--, and since i've always wanted to make a Hammerworld-themed level, i may continue it :)

I shared you the new vmf on dropbox, just in case you get a new computer or want to edit it in Sledge.

For the scaling portion of the VM tool, i'd like to see the origin set on the vertices you select, the way the stock tool does it; it's just a lot easier that way imo.

Also, you should be able to move and/or nudge selected vertices in the 2d window, WHILST in VM. (this is crucially needed when lathing an object).

All this said, is still need to time to explore your new gadgets before passing final judgement, so please take this into account ;)

Need to open this up and drink in the improvements! Also, dem tabs! =)

Bugs, Notes, and Nitpickery
--The new VM and real-time error list is VERY interesting! (it's going to take me some time to explore these new options!)
-- move up/down feature missing from visgroups.(very cool btw that it preserves visgroup names from csgo vmf, and i can edit brushwork between engines, awesome sir!)
-- transparent aaatrigger WOOT! =)
-- find/replace texture is still buggered if the texture doesn't exist(not in a wad)
-- i would like to see the intro dialog window where you choose the game/mod centered, as disco stu previously requested.
-- hitting shift+x still does not toggle through which half or both you want to keep while clipping.
-- Clip tool is allowing you to clip in all three dimensions in a 2d window, by allowing you to drag a third point from the clip line(i find this insanely awesome, even if it is a bug ;) )
-- "reset to original" button on new vm very good idea
-- i love the poking and beveling but i need a user-guide or tutorial maybe :P
-- maybe add an unpoke/unbevel button as well, though i shouldn't make suggestions for this until i've played with it more...
- double-clicking an object for entity properties not working(not a big dea), thought you had this enabled, or it's an option maybe?
- Tool Hide Unselected not working(hides everything not just unselected)
-- when i try to tie a solid to an entity, it says "no eligble solid found and my fgd is buggered" (sorry if this has been previoulsy reported)
-- when dealing with a group of objects forming a brush-based entity, WITH ignore checked, deleting any section of the object will delete the whole thing(selecting in the 2d view only, so i think it's a 2d selection issue).
-- With select by handles ON, drawing a selection box should select all objects where the handles are inside, currently it does not, and you have to individually select each handle.(sorted in options!)
-- awesome that recent files work, PLUS i like the option to remember opened files, especially on an ongoing map, great!
-- remove visgroup under edit doesn't remove it for me.
-- complex objects still behave weirdly when i try to clip them--objects i can clip fine in 3.5 or source sdk--, i.e., sledge doesn't allow the whole thing to be cut, just parts.
-- no crashes or bug reports editing an hour straight! =)
-- The primitive preview selection mask is pwn.
-- Patiently awaiting an icon.

(if you'd prefer these bug reports/notes pm'd, let it know!)

Awesome stuff PB, well done so far sir! :)
Xylem: love the WIP shots sir! =P

I never worried about the grid, so long as a whole objects vertices lined up together..

If you like, post or pm me a link to the .rmf and the compile log, and i can give it a go for you, also questions:
  • what compile tools are you using(i'd recommend the latest zhlt or vhlt)
  • what compiler?(i recommend muzz's compilator front end instead of hammer)
  • what FGD you using?
Also i don't know if it's related, but use HLFix. (Muzz's compilator also makes HLFix easy to setup)

Big improvement from the last version PB!

I've been editing for about 45 minutes with no major issues! I'm working on rebuilding this, as a primer to explore Sledge =)

bugs/issues
  • clip tool: clip tool hotkey is an exception to the rule, and Shift+X should cycle through the clip sides, NOT toggle the tool off ;)
  • clip tool: will not let me clip complex objects fsr(may be related to the above, or the fact i was dealing with a decompiled map)
  • Mark textures feature(reminder)
  • Alt+E scaling not implemented(reminder)
  • tool mouseover should also list their respective hotkey, not just the name
  • Ctrl+M scale requires nonzero values for xyz, even if you are only scaling one dimension(maybe change the default values from 0.00 to 1.00 to avoid this)
  • automatic selection should also work for verticies using VM
  • possibly reduce some of the clutter on the top bar for things that are(and should) be done with hotkeys, e.g., undo/redo, compile, etc.(by contrast, the left tool pane is nice perfect)

yup you are going to have a seam somewhere no matter what you do!

Also forgot to mention, i found rotating all the faces 45 degrees made them seem to line up better fsr.

I DID notice also, that when you select all the 'faces', hit 'world', and then hit 'center', you will get some segments/sections that line up perfectly. Maybe captatilize on the areas that work, and alt-right-click from there in all directions?

Someone who is a good texture aligner needs to chime in here and give us some pointers; there has to be a way to do this correctly without modeling and unwrapping it...

In source i can select a bunch of faces, regardless of what brushes they are applied to, click "face" or "world"(depending on the object), toggle "treat as one", and click C for center, and they all line up perfectly!

In goldsource, you get gaps and weird stretching everywhere, and i'm not sure why... I will try to play with it a little more...

Edit
I was wrong; i'm getting the same sort of seams and crap in source, so i guess it depends on the object?

Here's the best i can do in gs:
