Well, I think I finaly fixed my driver problem after six months. I uninstalled my drivers, used a driver cleaning program to nuke any old drivers, then installed some slightly newer ones, and have been playing Portal for about 20 minuets with no crashes. Awesome game, I hope I can finish it soon.

So, with that being said: off to TF2.

No disc. And my dad would be pretty pissed if I uninstalled Vista, wince we would be unable to reinstall it.

It seems to be on ATi's end, since Nvidea works fine.

Then again, when I also installed the new card, I didn't check the power supply and stuff, so yea.

(When I say no disc, I mean my Dad has them somewhere i don't know. I Don't think he tries to keep them from me, I just don't know where he put them.)

I don't want to derail the thread, so I'll make a new one.

well, I have an old PC running XP, still pretty good, although it doesn't even meet the minimum requirements.

So unfortunately, not an option (this came preinstalled with Vista)

I just got back from GameStop, Orange Box in hand. But before I can play, I have to get my ATi driver problem sorted out, since I'm on Vista. :( A friend is going to give me a link to Omega drivers, and see if they run any better.

Anybody have suggestions that may help, so I can play?

EDIT: Well, Omega drivers don't have Vista versions out yet, so I'm at a loss.

Avanti would be great with the art style, no doubt.

Tiodd Hollenshead once said something very wise about Doom and Doom 3: When as many people have played Doom as much as they have, they feel it is a tiny bit "their" game. That's how I feel; neither you, much less me, can escape that. I want the game that got me into online gaming.

Exactly. Great to new and moderate people, but for people like me, I don't know if I can FIND it to be great to.

Hell, I hope some TF mod takes TF2's art style, do some moderate gameplay (simply balance the nade system) and just leave it as that. Not sure if a server plugin, like mentioned before, could do it though.

Off topic: Did Black Mesa release? I sure as hell want to play that.

My point is.. I'm really upset how Valve seems to have catered to new players completely, with no concern for us veterans at all.

Grenades suck?

Redesign them, don't just kill them, There were problems with the old grenade system, yes, but they could have easily been fixed. Valve cutted a design corner, in my honest opinion. They should have tried to redesign them first, before just tossing them. Either way, I don't know how it will turn out, as I don't have the Orange Box (YET.)

Garbage?

I honestly don't think it's that. I still think it deserves a larger fanbase than it has at the moment.

Also, don't lie: it was an uneven fight, because Valve was the big company here.

By the way... I'm just curious...

have you even played FF yet?

Just a little something I would like to know...

Let me be more specific: I was wrong when I said FF was here to stay.

And hey... I realize that a lot of stuff I said about FF turned out to be very wrong. They have about twelve people playing right now. It's a shame, too- they put a lot of hard work into it. Still, you can't deny it: Valve did pretty much turn their backs on the old veterans of the game. But whatever, I am, again, going to give TF2 a fair chance, at least as much as I can hope to.
And, people will still be making TF mods for new games/engines. A UT3 version is probably inevitable (Hell, I think a group has already started one.)

Gamestop lost the preorder. I shit you not, I even have the voice mail they left on our phone. I went to check what had changed, and my reservation was gone. I even got a little stuffed Sonic, because I pre-ordered a game. I didn't bother with them, because it was only five bucks.

I know your gonna just shoot it down anyway, so I don't give a shit. I'll regain credibility when I give my thoughts on the game. I just haven't found the time to get the game, that's all. I have a a very large amount of school work at the moment.

Also, you have no life if you actually went looking for that post. If you want, I can see if I can fetch a post of mine from the FF forums, in which I said Gamestop lost it. You really think this matters? I didn't get the game yet, big deal. I don't know why you seem to have this little personal vendetta against me Luke, I said when I get the Orange Box, I'll give TF2 a fiar look. Not too mention the cracks are showing through FF now, and I'm pretty much done playing it. I'm actually HOPING TF2 is better right now, because frankly, FF isn't all it's cracked up to be, because while it's still great... it doesn't seem fresh enough to me.

And finally, if I had a pre-order anyways, that doesn't mean I picked up said pre-ordered copy the day it was released, no? (of course, it would be past 2 days now, so...)

EDIT: And yes, I know I said "give us proof" about the testing thing in the TF2 thread. Do me a favor, and just let it be. When I buy the game, I'll take a screen of the games in my Steam games list.

EDIT 2: And, now that I think about it, didn't I post on here before that GS lost it?

On a separate note, I already started the brush work for a Portal map in GTK Radiant. When i get the orange Box, I'll switch it over to hammer by exporting it to .map.

Yes, exactly my point.

A fucking 75 pound scout shouldn't be able to easily take on a 200 pounder HWGuy and win. If I wanted balanced stuff like that, I would play a simple game of Team Deathmatch. Simple.

Anyway, it's only a matter of time until a server mod pops up. I'm learning C/C++, and if I ever somehow get the amount of skill needed, I would make it in a heartbeat (well, make the decision to make it,anyway.)

Finally...

What.

Is with.

The fucking.

CAKE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! :o

Gahh!! It's like on TV, where the kid doesn't see the movie, and everyone else does, and they know all the cultural references, and the kid does not.

Just don't spoil it for me.

Well, I am getting 3 games for the price of one, so I won't complain.

As for my TF2 qualms, if the removal of grenades really ends up bothering me, I wouldn't be surprised if a server side mod that turns it into the old formula pops up. It's bound to happen.

Personally, that's what I think they should of done: made grenades an option. That way, it's left up to the server mod's preference. Both the old player's and new players are happy. I plan to pick up the Orange Box tomorrow. So, that'll be my final word on the matter.

That, and Halo 3, COD 4, and the UT3 Beta will all have my attention, unless TF2 really blows me away.

I plan to get it soon, and I plan to play TF2.

However, TF2 users have been porting FF maps over without permission. That kinda says something about the community to me.

Nonetheless, I will give TF2 a fair chance. There. Now move along. No more "bitch slap" exchanges, as another forum goer put it, please.

Portal looks like my kinda game, though. Episode 2 looks cool, like the vehicular stuff. Still, no new weapons makes no sense.

For the last time, FF isn't a TFC copy. It's a mix of all the old TF games, I'm not the only one saying so.

Second, I still am going to give TF2 a try.

That's fanboyism. They didn't work hard for 8 years... they pretty much abandoned it until about 2 1/2 years ago. Sure, that's still hard work, but so is FF. And if you say I should burn in hell over it, you, sir, have problems. It's a fucking computer game, get your priorities straight.

The only good thing I see in TF2 is an art style that is pretty sweet. But it's not original, games have been using it as far back as 1998-99, with Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio (I suppose you are all going to call me a Sega fanboy now...)

Also, the custom maps suck?!?!? Have you seen what the FF community has been up to? Several awesome maps have already been finished by them, they just have to get their entities set up. Oh, and that's another thing, FF uses LUA for map scripting (I admit, not new completely, but I think it's the first mod besides Garry's mod to use it...if there is another mod besides Garry's mod and FF that uses it, point it out, please.) The possibilities will be endless. There are already several sweet ideas being thrown in. Oh, and I personally don't feel like having every map command point based, like TF2. I prefer varied map play, and FF will deliver on that. Go visit their forums, and see for yourself. Badlands is being worked, on Warpath, Murderball... I myself plan to make a soccer map, even having the teams named after the Italian and French teams, via LUA.

Again, I'll think what I what I want to think, you can't change my opinion. Too bad, cry me a fucking river.

Exactly, the Medic has always been an offense class, but from my experience, which is a lot, they also healed- A LOT. Now you do realize, that no one will even play the medic, because they will grow very bored of just healing people? That's the mentality Valve has taken; the way they have changed everything, people will get very bored very fast.

So "kthxbye!" up my ass, I'll have my own opinions.

My personal opinion. The way TF2 is designed, I don't think it will hold player's interests for very long. But that's just me. Everyone seems to go for TF2 just because it looks like a Pixar cartoon. I know for almost a fact that if FF had used the same art style, everyone would be, "FF, because it has that awesome art style."

Wow, it's hit the #4 spot on Steam.

It's definatly here to stay, no doubt. Hopefully, I can get my driver issues solved fast enough to get involved in clan play. I would love to start a clan; hell maybe one of you guys could form a TWHL clan too, that would be pretty cool- and no offense, but it's obvious that FF will have a MUCH bigger clan community than TF2, simply because it appeals to the veteran clanners by sticking to the formula. As a matter of fact, FF leagues were being formed well a year in advance.

Yea, just so you guys know, if you get a full bright effect on some maps, then the installer skipped some files.

Here's what to do to fix it, from the FF forums:

"If you run into the installer skipping files, delete your clientregistry.blob.

Mine is located here: D:GamesSteamClientRegistry.blob

Yours may be located in a different place. The steps:

Close Steam

Delete ..SteamClientRegistry.blob

Restart Steam

Reinstall.

Should fix the issue"

Monkey looks absolutely awesome.

Like, ports forwarded correctly, etc...

Anyway, I just had a quick run through, I had to quit when my drivers failed (I'm on Vista, and the drivers for ATi cards don't adjust their fans correctly.... and Rivatuner and such doesn't detect my card's fan, so i can't set it to 100% to fix it...)

Anyway, it was simply one thing:

Awesome. Plain and simply awesome.

The first class I tried was Pyro. They balanced it out, and it is now both an excellent offense and defense class. I also got to try the Engineer on cornfield, also awesome; making sentries and other buildables is extremely easy, they are now just featured as weapon in the bucket, and you just select one buildable, find a spot (if you can build, it will place a transperent version version of the buildable on the ground in front of, and won't plus show an icon if you can't, very intuitive), and click; if you have enough cells, you'll build it. That was all I was able to do before my drivers failed.

Very fun, easily better than TFC, imho.

Anyways, people are saying it feels and looks perfect, and that it feels and plays exactly like a Fortress game should, so that seems great. I'm getting it off the torrent right now, and have a fan pointed straight into the PC to prevent that stupid Vista driver problem, causing it to overheat. So now that shouldn't happen now.

Steps to make a human being take you seriously:

Don't insult them off the bat
Don't accuse them of doing/saying something they didn't
Accept that people, whatever side they are on, are entitled to their own opinion.

And see what I mean about the DoD thing? Look what happened there. I do believe Valve is very talented, but they do make mistakes. They aren't invincible.

And how do I know you are not making something up? Do you know how many people say that their "x's y works for company so-and-so, and have exclusive insider info"?

And wow, telling me to fuck off? Very mature there buddy. If you want me to believe you, be respectful. Just because it's the internet does not mean you can act however you want. Maybe if you had not been calling a "fucking douche" right off the bat, I may have given your claims some reason, because then maybe you were just telling the truth, and it happened to sound like the stereotypical insider's info claim. But, alas, your behavior has given me enough to make my own judgment. If he really does have an uncle who works there, what's the guy's name?

Also, it should be noted Valve is in Bellevue, Washington, not Seattle. And I very highly doubt they would play test a beta outside their offices, unless it was an open beta, which there was not, to the public's knowledge, anyway.

Also, I thought it was your FRIEND who tested it, not his uncle...

Also, about my DOD thing... I mean it's classes, etc. were chopped up a lot... In DoD, they really stream, lined everything to make it new player oriented, and any class could take out any class. It didn't work that way in the original DoD, from my experience anyway.

You guys like what you like, I like what I like- liking the traditional formula doesn't make me dumb.

Oh, and I preordered TF2 more than 18 months ago, I'm sure of it. And preordered Orange Box for Episode 2 and Portal as well.

Again, who knows I may end up liking the damn thing, but I am allowed to from my own opinions on what I think it may be, I'm not saying I know it will be what i think it is.

Why so, because I don't agree with you?

You can like TF2 all you want, and yes, it was a reason I pre-ordered Orange Box. But that was before Valve made these horrid changes to the formula. They also took a shortcut by taking out grenades, instead of redesign the system, if they really thought they were bad.

I like TF2's art style quite a bit, but that seems to be why everyone loves it- "The art style is so original for an FPS!!!"- yes, but doesn't automatically make it a good TF game. Not to mention it took Valve about ten years.

That's just my first impression of the game; my final opinion isn't until I play it. But either way, since it took over ten years for an official sequel, and no one outside of the Half-Life or Quake communities knows what it is, Valve most likely ruined the only chance for TF to become popular again.

Who the hell knows, maybe it will become popular again. but even if it does, it's not the same feel.

Besides the fact, there's also a chance they'll start patching it so it's like the original TF formula, if new people don't start getting into it, and they realize the only way to save it is for veterans to play.

Of course, Gamestop lost my reservation, but I'll just buy an extra copy on the tenth.

FF, because they are not fucking with the god damned formula like Valve. Everything us serious TF players (conc jumping, etc.) has been put to waste for good. TF2's going to fail once people realize its just like DoD.

And for the record, I do like TF2's art style- that's it.

They took out grenades, made it so a spy can take a HWGuy head on. See, I bet most of you people have never played TF seriously, from what I am reading (Of course, I could be wrong, and if I am, I am absolutely stunned.). The people who actually played and stayed with the game are being betrayed completely.

It' simply a shame, the veteran players are being steered away, and the new people will say "Oh. this is a nice style, but DoD is realistic and nearly exactly the same, so I'll play that instead." TF2 will probably kill the series.

Oh, and FresheD, if you actually read up on FF, you would see they have done class balancing, as a matter of fact, the Pyro was one of the favored offense classes by the Beta testers. Please check your facts before you post.
