Fancy brushwork like this is fun i know, but almost never practical, both from a looks and resources perspective, i.e. you are much better off using a very simplifed brush with a nice texture, to achieve the same or similar look.

It sucks that gs doesn't have displacements nor smoothing groups...

I was playing around using the lathe method, and i was able to do this in like 30 seconds:

As far as the texturing, that's the best i can do.. i feel like the texturing in source is way easier somehow...

Yay tool tips labels! =PP

A couple teaser bugs:
  • Used textures only option in texture bfowser doesn't work for me.
  • hotkeys are buggered for me bad. some you fixed don't work now, or they will toggle the tool on but not of, i.e. hitting shift+a while the texture browser is open, it should then close it(it doesn't). Also, if your mouse pointer is over the 3d window when you toggle a tool, it will also move you the WASD direction as well!
  • hide mask doesn't work in texture properties
  • in source, hitting 'esc' key will deselect a brush and/or close a window, might be good to add.
  • no nudge
  • is there a way to toggle off the grey selctiong thingie over brushes? or at least adjust the opacity?
  • automatic selection now working for me
  • Alt-E scaling tool is missing? ='(
Sorry if some of these are doubles!

Btw, thank you for the improvements to texture properties! dem extra decimal places, and i love the fact that it updates automatically =)

Also love you can manipulate and adjust the clip blade in every 2d window... Great stuff man cant wait to see more :)

Question/Idea
Can you set up Sledge to canabalize/borrow config settings and preferances from an existing hammer setup(if there is one), to make the setup basically automatic?

Or would that be considered cheating? =P

Plugin idea
A screen shot utility(i know someone here coded one already, but i can't remember who), for quicker easier in-dev shots. In fact, maybe you could do something like Archie did with the preset cameras, for those sweet time lapses he did for The Core?

Weird error selecting/ungrouping the Skybox brushes from This Map. i can't seem to select it from the 3dview, even with the ignore groups button checked. (converting it to vmf makes it behave normally, and/or i can select and ungroup it from the 2d view)

Also btw, do you plan to add the center selection handles? I miss them, but i must admit like the reduced visual clutter =)

Also too, i love that the texture properties shows you multiple faces if you've selected an object with multiple textures, neat!

Oh i thought textures had not been implemented yet, because i can't get them to work(i set up the wads and whatnot)! So, I'll give it another shot :)

bugs
  • Shift+a texture properties hotkey
  • Shit+s select hotkey
  • Shift+x clip hotkey
  • Shift+v VM hotkey
  • tool name popup when you mouseover
  • ctrl+w ignore groups hotkey missing(i think i sent you that already)
  • uac prompt everytime i open still; should i reinstall as administrator?

Got the textures working! i didn't realize you had to set the textures for each profile(i have won and steam), which actually a big improvement over the way hammer does it ;)

Also, i like the new materials browser, well done! =)

Crash for me too, error report sent. should i reinstall .net 4? (when i went to install it, it asked if i wanted to remove/repair the current install, so i thought it was good.

OOPS error occurs immediatley at startup. Thereafter, it shows the visgroup/texture bars on the right, but nothing else is showing up.

Edit
"Run as Adminstrator" fixes it, i'm up and running! =)

As far as a tutorial idk...If you have a specific thing you are trying to do, pretty much anyone here is qualified to help with creative use of the HL entities.

Also you can always try to contact the authors of deathrun maps here and on other sites, and ask for some pointers.

Another thing you can do is decompile your favourite deathrun maps, not to steal, but to see how things are done ;)

My original map for this compo was redistributed to the workshop, and it's on the second page!

The map is alpha and crap, but i guess people liked it because it was original. It's pretty shocking to see it rated so high, for something so obviously unfinished =)

I feel like some of you may be interested in this. GameBanana seems to be having a lot of contests lately(a good thing), and they all have prizes.

This one is unique in that you only have to build a single prefab!

Modelling your entry is recommended though not required, and as always with GB contests, any engine/mod/game is acceptable to use for your submission. (i'm submitting mine as a brushwork prefab for csgo)

Your errors aside, i've found i get the biggest clip economy from using -cliptype simple paramater for CSG compile(using compilator or expert compile).

It's true suture, but the tradeoff is you can build many many many more brushes in hammer 4 than you ever could in 3x.

also as I've said in the past, these "floating vertices" rarely cause visual errors in-game so they can be largely ignored.

In the old days, there was always a monkey or an ant around to encourage and help facilitate, NOT take over. That's all I was trying to say, pb.

Btw, I don't recall anyone quitting because it wasn't using Sohl, but of course I could have missed that.

People DID quit over it not being source tho, and to those you-know-who-you-are people, I say: boo =)

Yeah i feel everybody has only a half-boner for this idea, since we are only getting feedback from the same 4-5 posters for the most part.

The fact that half want GS and the other half want Source doesnt help the mod in moving forward either; i feel we lost people immediately when it was declared GS.

It would help i think if we were given grown-up powers to edit our own posts(namely the opener), so you could go there for an updated overview of any progress, without reading the entire thread.

idk, maybe we should start over in a new thread? if that doesn't work maybe we should pick a different idea? idk, i'm kinda reaching here, don't know what to do to move it forward... ='(

That's why i never use sarcasm/humor on the internet anymore, since i feel like it's almost always misinterpreted.. :)

Also to mods: maybe it would be beneficial to give Sir Tetsu0 mod powers to edit the first page/title, so people don't have to read the whole thread to get what's going on, OR maybe we start a new thread?

tbh, both methods of running this intrigue me, but we have to fall on one side or the other...

Should we put the freeform vs. prefab building design to the vote?

I think stojken's got it; including the aforementioned lift and stairwell(s), along with some support columns, it should give a decent illusion you are in a skyscraper.

Also, every map will share the same skybox; so as long as you have windows in your entry, every floor of the building will share the common view. (when i put this together i will distance the players submission the proper distance from the ground, so player will have the illusion he is moving up)
We aren't having an exterior..?
yeah no, there is no actual building, but we will have a model of a skyscraper you will be able to look up at in the start lobby map. (which will be a "normal" skysraper according to ghost's poll ;) )

Lift people should probably start designing the car and shaft for the elevators. We also need a stairwell, e.g., the player will be able to access the maps from the lift, as well the stairwell, which you could make one, or one two, two located on opposite sides of the building.

Ok, like atom said let's decide on a max floor dimensions and elevator/stairwell structure? (we can design the exterior of the building later)

What we've have established so far:
  • Project will be GS SoHL. (maybe a source version later down the road?)
  • Compile tools will be VHLT or other advanced tools.
  • Freeform floor design with a common elevator, stairwell, and lobby.
  • lobby as the starting point for the map, indoor as well as exterior.
  • floor transitions using level changes.
  • Building will share a common 2d/3dsky, which we will have to choose as well.
Please feel free to add to this list for anything i've missed!

Instant: yes, GS is clunky, but for this project completely doable. Also, nice work on the skysraper research, dems is very pretty =)

Ok, but even if we go the freeform way, we still need a building for the player to look at, when he is outside on the bottom floor looking up(which we previously discussed).

I think the best place to start is we agree on a building design, and prefab the structure(i can help to build it). Then we can worry later about the details ;)

So people please nominate a skyscraper building design preference if you have one, and we can vote on what everyone likes the best?

True, or the could be independent as well, say each floor has it's own little story, and/or have some areas with an interrelated storyline?

Maybe just having everything in the building is a theme/story enough in itself? It's at least already more than we had for Rooms =)

SoHL should allow us to do most if not all entity tricks with little trouble, including the lift controls. (a nice interactive directory of each floor in the lobby might be nice too)

Ghost: agree on all points we want to the map to be an immersive experience ;)

Gameplay
Speaking of the "experience", has anyone given a thought to if we should add some combat, or otherwise some sort of gameplay?

Ya, i agree scotch, the prefab floor structure is the best path, tho tet's idea, or sharing only the elevator and stairwell structure whilst having the floors be basically anything has it's advantages. most notably, it would be the easiest to put together =)
Can anything exist in-game if it passes the edge of Hammer's grid?
In source, i know only the entitie's origin(like for say a prop model) has to be inside the grid to exist. (i think it's the same in GS, but not sure)

My proposal, following PB's and Cstriker's examples:

1. Decide on a skyscraper building design, which we can then prototype into a structure in hammer, and from that build modular floor slices.

2. Take assignments on who is working on what floor(s)*, and/special sections of the building like the aforementioned basement, lobby, penthouse, etc.

*If a user want's to build a bigger floor, for say a pool like cstriker said, then i think we will have enough floors that one author could take 2-3 floor slices if they needed them, to accomodate their design vision.

3. THEN, i would say leave it up to the author, whether he wants to stick to the building plan, OR, variate from the prefab structure. (as long as the elevator tubes line up on that authors floor, i don't see any big deal on going beyond the constraints of the original prefab building)

When all is said and done, the player should be able to walk outside on the bottom floor, and look up at the entire structure of the skyscraper, and on each floor when you look out the windows, you should see the same landscape.

At least, this is the way i envision the project moving forward, and is by no means the only way! =)
