I've been playing THE SHIT out of Don't Starve.

It's like Diablo 2 mixed into Minecraft, all with its own unique style.

Greater than the sum of its parts is easily arguable one way or the other, but it's damn good either way.

The good thing about Goldwave (unless they've changed it) is that the trial is usage based, and the counter for it is stored in the registry! Change that and you've got a fresh trial again.

So, someday, possibly someday soon (only possibly), I would like to move on to Source mapping. Those who know me would know I've basically never touched it as of yet.

What I would like to know, is firstly, What do I need?
I'm guessing it's not like Goldsource, where the editor, fgds, compile tools, etc are scattered all over the webs, but I could be wrong.

And secondly, What do I need to know?
I've gotten a solid understanding of Goldsource over the years, but what's different?

A friend of mine who is completely new to mapping and wants to get into it will also be keeping an eye on this thread, so any advice you can give to the fresh is also appreciated.

I vote for SoHL. I'm using it with Particle Fusion anyway.
Doesn't SoHL allow 3D skyboxes? That would be cool for a skyscraper map.
i never uses SoHL so it will all be new school for me :)
SoHL should allow us to do most if not all entity tricks with little trouble, including the lift controls. (a nice interactive directory of each floor in the lobby might be nice too)

Again, I don't care. All that is just why I assumed we were going with it.

As general consensus would appear to show, the next TWHL Co-op mapping project will be a skyscraper, where each member creates a floor in their own theme! I'm just booting up a fresh thread here, Tetsu0 seems to have taken on the job of managing this project.

Engine: GoldSource
Game: Spirit of Half-Life (If the link isn't correct, please say so)

Cheers to Tetsu0 for the idea, and the elevator base we'll be working from!

Example Map

RULES
  • You cannot change the dimensions of the elevator.
  • Null every exterior surface.
  • You CAN include outside decorations outside of your windows. This doesn't have to make sense, it's a fun project, not a realism contest.
  • Maximum (interior) vertical dimensions of 1024 units. Feel free to connect any other 'floors' within that height limit with stairs, lifts, etc.
  • There are no length or width limitations, but be reasonable.
  • HAVE FUN!

Base dimensions and prefab elevator/stairwell/skybox. That's all we need to decide/make.
Why would the number of floors be limited by the number of people? People can make as many as they want.

Btw, skyscraper was just the first suggestion. No one said we had to stick with the idea.

That might be a design choice for any one floor. Otherwise the tower might need to be linear, without the player going to whichever floors he/she wants.

I'd say to whoever is designing the lift, see if you can do a proper floor number buttons type of thing. It shouldn't be too hard, and would give each floor a definite identifier and (for all intents and purposes) fast travel.

I thought the prefab floor structure was the logical way to do things.
I think as long as the author stays within the logical barriers of the shape of the building and height of the floor, he/she (lol) should be able to habitate it with whatever he wants. Maybe a few specially made to make thetower make sense, like an entrance level (with our NEW special door formula!) and, I dunno... a carpark.
I mean, if we were making an actual, realistic tower... kinda dull.

Semi-unrelated: Can anything exist in-game if it passes the edge of Hammer's grid?

Well, what restraints would we impose on the participants? I mean, being a skyscraper, each floor would logically have to be of a certain length, width and height... Unless we discard logic and head in Tardis-style, any damn size you want on the inside. Don't know if that would be any good though.

Also, any limit to entries? I mean, skyscrapers aren't small. If we only got 8-ish people entering, that's not too big. Would open up the doors for people who get several ideas.

They're the immediate issues I can think of.

A lift seems the simplest way to do level-changes. Would be an interesting entity set-up, too. Stairs could be optional; made by each person or standardly/basically/boringly next to the lift.

I've still never mapped for Source. I probably won't. gldsrc for me! If I join in. Which I might. Sentence fragments.
