Is the mod for Episode Two? If so, there's been some problems with that. Does the engine error say something along the lines of "Cannot load client library"?

I think he's talking about when you convert a number of surfaces to displacement, the edges of all the triangles meet so sewing them doesn't cause any texture stretch problems.

I generally don't run into many problems with this, I find it's best to stick to larger grid sizes (16, or even 32) and 90 and 45 degree angles (excluding slanting, that's always helpful) when it comes to boxing out your displacements initially. After that it's just a matter of being extremely patient and a bit of a perfectionist to minimise stretch as much as possible.

I say go for it, post your tips. They can't hurt.

What do you use tot play movies?
Media Player Classic for versatility (lots of plugins available) or VLC Player for simplicity (works with a lot of formats straight up).

Optimise any doorways/windows between the inside and outside of the map and break the outside area into BSP leafs that are visible from the inside.

We can't really be too helpful without seeing the map, but large areas in general are always a pain to optimise in the Source engine.

For one area 30 minutes might be pushing it. Can you give us an idea how big the area is, and what you've done in the way of optimisation (lightmap scale, hint brushing, occluders, those sort of things)?
My computer isn't the problem.
What are your specs? I'm just curious because compiling can be pretty lengthy, even on speedy computers.

It would make any PC bleed. The physics in Half-Life 2 don't like to interact with a large number of other physics objects. I think it's designed more for more accurate physics on a smaller number of objects rather then the simple, cheap 'bouncy' physics you might see in a game like Painkiller.

The scripted cinematic physics are a blessing if you ask me. Being able to see a far larger scale of destruction with great accuracy/realism and no major performance drop = win <3

I think they're more dangerous because of the force they exert. One shook the ground hard enough to topple a metal bridge, and the other hard enough to split a thick concrete one in three.

I would say it's a natural event (well, natural for an infant super portal I guess) more akin to a natural disaster then simply rain or wind.

Putting all that aside however, it's a game - it's designed to give the player a puzzle and show off the Source engine's pretty new effects. ;)

I'm in partial agreement with this. The dashes look kind of neat, but the colours.. I think it needs a background. Oh, and far less of a gap around the actual quotes.

Mark Laidlaw knows who he is. I'm willing to bet Gabe Newell and Doug Lombardi do too. The rest of us have to be happy with the title "Misunderstood servant of the people".

"G-Man" isn't trying to hint at Gordon, it's a a reference to the slang used to describe government agents. He's never referred to directly as being called 'G-Man' either. The future-Gordon and God rumours are terrible, too.

All we really know is that there are at least three higher factions competing in the Half-Life universe - The Vortigaunts, The Combine and G-Man's 'employers'.

Probably those.

Is this Source? Because custom materials in Source can be quite large. Small lightmap scales can also drastically increase a maps file size.

Madcow is a big fan of Source experiments. As fail as Crysis is, it's a good idea for an experiment -- a Combine soldier with Crysis-esque power suits would be challenging.

Pity you can't get the weapon to disappear as well, I ran into the same problem once.

Attaching says that two seperate pieces are apart of the same mesh even though they are completely seperate. Welding is a way of joining vertexes to bind together into one solid mesh.
I think I get you. So is there any major performance/practical differences, or are they pretty negligable?

Don't think this has been said, but the process of resizing all the avatars for TWHL3 borked around some of the transparent png's (the background turns black). Simply reupload them to fix 'em.

It's very nice to read all the positive responses to TWHL3! The mods thank you! Quick responses about the bugs too, it'll take a while for Pb to fix them all up, but it sounds like it'll be well worth the effort. :heart:
For example, the stickies could use a slightly darker orange line to seperate them more easyly from the other threads.
I like this idea.

Heh, i've owned Max 8 for quite a while and never bothered to learn it. Your tutorials seemed to have kicked me into gear. So far i've modelled a stool.. and a stool:

The more I look at my first one, the more I dislike it (and don't ask why I built a seperate high-poly and low-poly version :P).

Think i'll try a small weapon or something shortly. That or i'll make stools for the rest of my life.

Yes, it's finally here. As Ant has said though, it's not done yet. You'll have to bare with us as we iron out the remaining kinks and implement what's left. In the next day or so we'll be updating the forum guidelines to the new standards that we expect from everyone (including us mods), which we will urge you all to read and learn.

Take this as a fresh start for TWHL, we know it's had it's problems in the past, but this is where put them all behind us and bring forth a new, much more friendly, helpful and fun site for everyone to enjoy.
