Archie, try recompiling the map with the '-texreflectscale #' parameter set to 2.5 - 3.0, this might make the lighting look slightly better.
3.0 made it almost fullbright. Rubbbish. :/
And is the lightmap lower too?
Nope! thanks for the comment :)
Your last screen looks blocky arch and needs more trims. lighting is quite bleh as well..
Sadfaced until I realised you were talking about the photo! ...Or at least I hope you were :D

I'd also extend the wall supports so that they would connect with the ceiling ones, would make it look a bit more realistic
Can't get more realistic than the real place!

css and dod use 512 x 512 most often, but css is almost 7 years old. Computing power has moved on significantly since then and the norm in modern games is starting to be as high as 2048 x 2048.

The point is, though, that players with good computers will want the option to play the mod at its best - i.e. with high res textures. If you have scalable graphics it won't make a difference to people with older PCs.

I don't quite understand what you're saying about the UDK but it's coming across like you're making simultanious versions on 2 engines? A tad peculiar.

And just for the record, FPS stands for frames per second. You want that number to be high, not low.

Try ep2 just in case. The error you got normally occurs if you try to run a Source map in hl1 or vice-versa.

thanks, CT!

I must say I'm enjoying seeing the progress I've been making over the past week. I've done several all-nighters just working on The Core (you might have seen my complaints about it in the shoutbox) but the absolute best part are the SVN log updates.

For those who don't know - SVN is a system we (Urby, myself and Digi [our coder]) use which updates everyone's files for The Core when any one of us changes them. For example, if Urby needs some textures and asks me to make them I can add them to the core.wad and he'll get them automatically without me having to send him the whole .wad again.

When you commit your updates (apply them to everyone's folders) you get asked to write a short changelog so that updates can be kept track of.

Writing these after ~40 hours of no sleep produces some hilarious results.
Here's a few from the past month.

5th Dec, 21:49
Archie:

cendark intro reworked. Soundtrack added.
6th Dec, 03:12
Archie:

Get yer fuckin cendark tae fuck
6th Dec, 19:58
Urbanebula:

Updated the Human Grunt severed leg. It is now a pair of severed legs with the guts exposed.
You may need to check cenoff3 Archie.
7th Dec, 17:54
Archie:

More cendark wankery
10th Dec, 19:34
Archie:

Added a hole in the wall. A hole for fucking.
12th Dec, 13:01
Urbanebula:

Adding new textures to cencom2. This is going to be a ball ache...
23rd Dec, 21:10
Archie:

Updates to cendark. Holla.
Also todo.txt has a new entry. Get your shit together, Digi.
29th Dec, 00:21
Archie:

More Core2.wad nipplage. By which I mean there are new textures. And they are good. And you are a nipple.
29th Dec, 22:01
Archie:

Updated to take advantage of vulcan's HL compile tools. Seriously use them. Shit is off the hook.
30th Dec, 03:21
Archie:

Minor fix of a sound which wasn't looping properly because it's a dick.

I'm aware you've seen this area before, but this is it in a (probably) final state.
Textures have been dirtied by popular demand, lighting has been tweaked, brushwork and entities have been excessively optimised and it's been compiled with VHLT.

I disagree with the claim that compile times decrease. RAD takes significantly longer on a sparse compile, but the effect is definitely worthwhile.

wally only works with indexed bitmaps. if you import any other image format it converts it to indexed bmp and its method of doing so is terrible. It'll make textures grainier and lose colour information. If you've managed to get a non-indexed image to work as a transparent texture after wally has converted it then it was a total fluke.

In combination with the tiled paths, a solution to your lighting problem might be to raise the paths on struts from the rock/dirt floor by around 32 units and have angled spotlights pointing up and out from under the path. It'd be quite a dramatic lighting theme.

If you have the high-res textures, give the players the option to use them rather than forcing the low-res ones on them. Bad console ports don't have scalable graphics settings, PC mods should.

And using the low-res versions in your official media is bizarre.

If you have more blue indexes it's probably because your image has undergone compression at some point. This happens if you save it as a JPEG or take it through MSPaint.

<£100 covers a lot, including some pretty awesome semi-pro gear.

You can get my mic, the Samson CO1U for only £70 and I can tell you it's bloody fantastic. Unfortunately to get the best out of a studio mic like that you'll need to shell out £30 for various accessories like suspension mounts and pop shields. Full details of the accessories I use in this journal.

The most popular podcasting mic is currently the Blue Snowball. It's great quality right out the box. No need for any fancy suspension mounts or anything - this will sit quite happily on your desk being quietly awesome.

Backing away from the fairly expensive semi-pro range is the Blue Snowflake coming in at only £35. It's ridiculously portable and is light enough that you could probably mount it to something with nothing more than bluetack making it extremely practical. The tone isn't quite as open and rich as the semi-pros I mentioned, but for the price you won't find something better and again you don't need to spend further cash on a stand, suspension mount and pop shield.

Hope this helps.

iPhones are alright. You're totally restricted in how you use them and what you install on them, but they're quite sleek to use. Still massively overpriced and liable to break after less than a year, but better than most apple products.

Edit:
Your friend mark is dumb. Apple are genius when it comes to marketing. How do you think they've managed to sell billions of ipods when they're absolutely terrible at the only function they're designed to do?

B)
If The Walking Dead has taught us anything, it's that fat people can be used as fodder to give you time to escape.

Good start. Couple of grammatical and spelling errors here and there which distract from the story a little bit, but a good introduction none-the-less.
My only real critique would be that you broke one of the most important rules of writing: never start a paragraph with the word 'suddenly'. It feels so cheap.
Even a replacement like "without warning" or "a coldness seemed to descend upon the room" would improve it tenfold.

The suddenness of an event should be apparent by the writing style, and should not have to be explicitly narrated.

It's a known error.

1. Open up the Run Map dialog (File -> Run... or F9) in Hammer.

2. If not already in "Expert Mode", click the "Expert" button in the bottom left of the dialog.

3. Select "HDR Full Compile" from the Configuration pull-down.

4. Select the 3rd item down, it should say "$light_exe -both -game $gamedir..."

5. In the text box labeled "Parameters", along the right of the dialog, change the switch "-both" to "-ldr". It should now read "-ldr -game $gamedir $path$file"

6. Click the "New" button to create a new command in the configuration and select the new blank command at the bottom of the list.

7. Press the "Move up" button twice to move the new command to right under the command you just edited.

8. Enter into the text box labeled "Command": $light_exe or use the "Cmd" button to the right and select the "LIGHT Program" option for the drop-down menu.

9. Into the Parameters text box enter: "-hdr -game $gamedir $path$file"

A lot of those models are looking really nice! Good work.

Consider doubling the standard texture resolution you're working with, though. Modern PCs can handle it and the low-res textures you're using at the moment look a bit outdated.

Best of luck.

sigh. sail past the point, why don't ya?

cs was released, what, 11 years ago? And it was massively popular and genre defining. It gained a huge following many of whom still play it to this day.

What i said was that a new goldsource mod can't break into the market because goldsource is nowhere near popular enough anymore for it to have a high enough number of active servers.

cs players play cs. they don't migrate.
