after you are done and i've added a final optimization pass, we should be ready for beta release hopefully, bar some testing!

I agree Striker, we tend to work pretty well with our community collaborations, and they are basically flat structured very similar to valve, where nobody is really the boss.

Like you said, team mapping is perfect example, with ZERO planning, and it's turning out amazing, because everyone is pulling their weight, PLUS filling gaps and fixing problems where needed, without being told. (that last bit is just huge, and so rare in most workplaces)

If we continue team mapping a couple more times and better learn each other's true talents/shortfalls, there is NO DOUBT in my mind we will produce some truly creamazing results :)

I ran through the map quick, and i must say, i like the changes so far this pass. Even though they are compatatively subtle to previous passes, they make huge differences to the overall gameplay and prettiness.

I love striker's sniping loft, and that you guise split the hosties between the boiler building and the corporate office. The visual differences between this pass and last pass are just mind blowing, in large part to Archie and his swirling dervish of excellence..(i just notices your custom overly arch that is pimp sir) :o

Two more turns to go, some final optimizations and we have a finished map!!! :P

Compiling Hotdog's version 018 now!(Hotdog i must admit i can't tell what you edited, but i'm sure it was awesome) ;)

I made some changes as well, "shrinking" Cstriker's stairs to a ladder/fire escape, and added a window+ledge, so you can enter the TTH building from that same platform.

Also simplified some detail atop the TTH building(could use more) since that area is no longer accessible to players.

Compile should be finished soon, and then the map passes to Tetsu0 :)

the " duo partner" thing is interesting. Incidentally, GameBanana allows teams to participate(as well as individuals) in all their mapping compos.

It would be kinda neat to see what miniature "factions" formed from twhl could produce for a compo :)

Pretty wild shit!

I guess it makes sense that the top fraction of 1 percent in there field would work better in a less-structured environment, but it still seems like it would be anachy at valve, specially with almost 300 employees, i can't even imagine :o

I liked the last few simple ones like 30 brushes and texture pack, because they are so simple, but yet at the same time they force you to do more with less; i liked Hotdog's recent map from base minicompo for the same reason ;)

"My Room" rats idea would be fun as hell, too :)

Striker: I like your changes sir! though i do admit that stairwell might be better handled like a fire escape stairwell and/or ladder. I also think we should make a connection from the TTH shipping building to archies office--i see you've got doors there already =)--, but that's just my opinion. (presently you CAN jump from the roof of TTH building into the office)

Also, that tunnel sure looks impressive from the hammer screen! I care less about the vvis time and more about how it impacted the fps for the rest of the map. When you get time, send me a link to your underground bits, and i'll see about integrating it at the end ;)

Yes, you can criticize striker for not reading the thread, but he could criticize you for not including the .log file(as per the rules) with your build, and he could have seen the vrad paramaters used first hand ;)

Also Archie maybe you could upload your .radfile, so the other peeps can get the most out of the -textureshadows paramater?

that building is in the 3dskybox and pretty far off, so the texture should appear smaller, but you may be right still ;)

Hah blitz that is neat, so it's mostly just the skate park? (obv you could do the whole boardwalk in the skybox, and one of those huge wooden piers you see surfers by would be awesome)

Cstriker: like wha? you shouldn't really have any errors afaik, though i know i get those weird ones pertaining to materials and missing surfaceprop vmt thingies almost everytime i compile fsr.

Oh i've never played that, but it reminds me of scenes from califonication(which takes place in venice beach alot), and i've actually been there once for a couple hours when i had like a day layover at LAX.

I'm going to caution everyone at this point about adding propmodels to the outside of the map. Here is one example:

Notice the fps has dropped 26 frames since the last version, and we have 5 more edits to go.

The area depicted above and some others are(most of the outdoors actually) are pretty dicey fps-wise at this point. (opposite ct spawn to the middle of the street intersection is sketch, as well behind the building with the leaf piles, when you exit the boiler room from the side door, all the way over to the crates by urby's edit it's sub-50 fps)

In light of this, i'm going to ask everyone to play the bsp before editing, so you can see firsthand which areas are laggy, and avoid adding detail and propmodels in those places.

Lastly, i've yet to add areaportals and final optimizations(which will happen at the end), so we may be able to maintain good fps without removing anything, just everyone pleeze be careful on how much more models you add to the map ;)

@Archie: i keep running through your edit and i just keep involuntarily saying "WOW" and "HOLY $#@! and getting boners. this is some hot shit, and Tet is gonna cream when he sees what you've done to his boiler room :o

Plus, the fog+hdr look simply amazing, especially viewd through the building windows right at the sun, it's surreal-looking! =P

Looks amazing Archie! Tet's room looks great and you did a really good job with the 3dsky and preserving the pretty light beams :P

Ya i was wondering about that, and that was one of the big errors i was getting earlier in the day with inexplicable leaks outside world, but nothing was there.

So you're saying what caused that is trying to scale entites! Well thanks for clearing that up for me ;) The only reason i really though is was kosher is that the overlays seemed to scale, so i thought they were meant to.

Also last version i posted i didn't see any of the "contents solid" or "portal-thingie" errors, but now those crazy-big bounding boxes i was seeing make sense. team_mapping_015.log

Really beautiful stuff sir! I'm amazed at how efficient your workflow is; you map like 4-times faster than i do :o

i don't think so ninja, but if you want to view the progreess you can by making a shortcut to the .log file, and periodically open it to see how far it's gotten.

whats a matter btw, you having long compiles?

Archie: Oh and i forgot sir, all my hastily-thrown-in buildings in the 3dskybox are blocking all the pretty light rays!! :( Pleease work your magic there if you don't mind. (delete all those nasty 3dsky buidlings if you like) ;)

Ok Arch, i am Sincerly Sorry for making you wait so long... Here it is finally:

Most of my time was spent fixing errors caused by adding the 3dskybox and some other hiccups, rather than adding any visible content, unfortunately. Done in this version:

+Added some inaccessible areas like the entrance ramp and and the opposite roadway to 3dskybox
+nodraw'd +5000 faces
+optimized skybox
+added some clippin(needs more)
+added viewdistance values for all propmodels(some still need to be raised)

Note
I literally threw in some buildings in the 3dskybox just so there is something in there. FEEL FREE to change and and all stuff i there ;)

Hotdog: I changed your poster textures to "UnlitGeneric" so they would appear lit in the 3dsky, but fsr they still seem unlit. Sorry!

Question 1
I'm having a problem lately with all my overlays "dying in xen", anytime i move or clip a brush with an info_overlay on them.

Usually, i just select the overlay(s) and click the brush they are on, and they show up again, this doesn't work, and they are weirdly left with a huge bounding box around them fsr..

Is there a way to "refresh" them when the get screwed up this way, or do they have to be reapplied from scratch?

Question 2
Are overlays scalable for a 3dskybox? i could of sworn i tried scaling them down to .0625 and they worked perfectly, but now they don't seem to ;(

Ok Archie plan on beginning your slot for the third pass on saturday.

I'll do my best to finish up the optimizations plus some extra stuff by then ;)

Also for the third pass, i'm gonna ask everybody to pm me your preferred method of contact (pm,email,subspace frequency), and i'll try to send out reminders when your slot becomes available.

Remember, you have 12 hours to confirm in the thread you've started once the mapper ahead of you posts his edit in the thread. After that, the next guy in the queue becomes "activated", and you are moved to the end of the queue.

Last, i'm going to ask everyone to read the Guidelines again, so we're all on the same page. If anyone would like to see changes in the guidelines, NOW is the time to bring it up! ;)

Just noticing from the screens i have to increase the fade distance for a few of the major models like the TTH sign and the water tower, and there are still some nodrawn faces that shouldn't be that i need to fix ;)

Tetsu0: I spent an hour trying to light your area, but aplogize i couldn't do it better; I don't think i'll ever get my head around source lighting.

When i map for goldsource it rarely takes me more than 20 minutes to light the entire map, but i can't seem to light a single scene in source with unlimited time :zonked:

Ya blitz, that would help immensely having the layout of the map beforehand OR, we could say maybe dedicate the first pass to just building the map's footprint?
(maybe only 6-12 hour slots or something too, as i don't think you'd need lots of time to build the floor, since it's well, the floor) :P

Yeah you're gonna love it tetsu0 did an amazing job. Also bonus points since he was sick/injured all weekend ;)

Concerning performance
I've managed to increase 20 fps in most places by using prop fade distances alone, and i think if i'm able to get areaportals for the main interior areas(mostly the conference room and the shipping bay), i don't think we'll have any problem eliminating that lag you get at the middle of the map =]

I'm all for it as long as the majority agrees to add people at this point ;)

With receiving Tetsu0's entry this morning, the second pass is officially over!
(I will post some screenshots and tet's edit when i get home from work today and have a chance to get it compiled)

Also, the map is going offline for further optimizing before we begin the third pass, and i'm very happy to report the vvis compile has been shortened from 42 to 7 minutes! =P

Meantime, If anybody has some ideas on how to handle the third pass, what direction the map should go, or anything else, now is the time ;)

Agreed. you learn your most valuable lessons from the more harsh, unpleasant experiences.

And i don't feel it's about gaining a thick skin, but more it's being able to reboot your brain so you can actually learn something useful sometimes. (i know personally if i'm learning something new, i have to be pounded a bit to get it into me) ;)

Well we are following the queue, 'cept Blitz and tet switched.

New policy is you have 12 hours to confirm you're starting your turn, else you are bumped to the end of the queue and the next guy in line goes ;)

Tetsu0: I'm just finishing up optimizing the skybox on an optimized version of the map from blitz. I'll pm it to you when i'm finished, in-case you want to use it.
