Ninja Defuse brought up the idea of "Team Mapping" and i was immediately interested. Ninja and i were talking a little bit, although we are not sure how exactly to structure this new community project, we'd like to be able to finish it lock, stock, and barrel in 2 weeks.

Ninja was planning to do this in goldsource, but i would much rather do it in source if in any way possible. (I'll happily go along with the majority though either way)

Ninja was thinking each person gets a specified amount of time to work on his part, and then he turns it over to the next guy, and so on till the end. I'm fine with that, but of course we could get much more stuff done if we were all working independently, and 2 weeks is not a very long time.

So what do y'all think? Please share any/all ideas you may have for this!

This has been attempted many times before. I for one would love to see it succeed. Count me in. I would prefer GldSrc but I will gladly attempt a source submission.

Any story or format ideas?

I would love to pick a novel/gimicky idea that is do-able, and work my heart out for 2 weeks on it. Knowing there were 4-5 others doing the same thing at for the same mod would be quite an incentive to produce quality work.

For example:

-Unforseen Storylines: like blue shift/op4/decay/etc, pick one of the areas you hear about but never actually see during the tram ride in half-life, and we will collectively build that part of the mod, complete with a story arc that fits the original.

-Famous Architecture: we collectively choose a real-life building or one in the planning, like a giant dubai skyscrapper or a new casino, or just anything really cool. We then div the responsibilties of the map up to those who best-suited to their talents, and we build it.

-we collectively come up with an easy to do gameplay gimmick like tower defense, or maybe a tron-style game where your object is to destroy the floor under your opponent, or just a gameplay idea that is fun, interesting, and hopefully original, and then we all develop/build it.

Again these are just brainstorms, i'm down for anything.

I remember the plan for TWHL Mix 2 was to have each section contain a part for a teleportation device which would take you to the finale.

Lot's of entity work though...

Failing that, there's the "Central Transit Hub in Area 9" for high security personnel. :D

Each person getting 2 weeks is not what I expected. I thought it'd be for 2 solid weeks every person gets a day and then sends it on to the next person.

Fun things to do would be to save it numerically at the end of each day so you can see the progress made after each mapper's work.

Also my vote is definitely for Source. So is Urby's, he's just confused.

If everyone is working simultaneously throughout the two weeks then it just becomes a bunch of maps to slap together into one, whereas if one person gets it for 24 hours then it moves on we really get a sequential progress.

One person getting only one chance of 24 hours is a very risky assumption to start with. Many will have most of their day occupied by other activities, such as school. There has to be another method found for a sequential community project.

And also, I vote for Source. I don't even have hammer 3.5 and the tools for goldsource mapping installed anymore.

I can think for myself thank you very much. So yeah, i vote Source.

If I only get 24 hours to work on it then I will need 48 notice beforehand.

48 notices? Can't you just read the one notice 48 times? Would save someone having to send so many, that could get tedious.

48 hours* notice. Sorry. TWHL is tiny on my Android and I was having a shit.

Start out small.

7 Members, 1 quickie DM map, 24 hours each, send it on after each day then repeat for a second week. 48 hours total each.

I'm down to try it archie's way. It looks like most people ware wanting source so that is a done deal. NOTE: for anyone new to source, you can still contribute to the map it's ok if it's something small, and brushwork works exactly the same in source so... =)
One person getting only one chance of 24 hours is a very risky assumption to start with.
I agree. maybe it will work out to 2 days per person, depending on how many people we get, but the hard limit is two weeks. (maybe we can allow a first and then a second 24-hour period if time allows)

Right now it looks like we have:
Archie
Urby
Ninja Defuse
Me
joebamba - maybe
Cstriker - maybe
2muchvideogames - maybe
Dimbark - maybe

That's 8 people so far, which seems like a pretty good number to start with if people can specify if they are a definite or not please.

Anyone else intersted? We need someone good with layouts to volunteer to start.

The only other major thing before we pick our spots in the pecking order i think is to decide if 2 24-hour spots or 1 48 hour spot per person would be better? Once people are defintie we will know exactly how much time each person will get, e.g., 7 people would be 2 weeks exactly.

I would be willing to help, but I can only get the 2D views working in Hammer, so no texturing and probably no complex brushwork either. It would work to start off the map but I'm bloody awful at layouts and all that stuff. And I think 2 24 hour spots each might be better, that way each person would get a chance to work on the map at two different levels of completion.

[Edit] Actually I have no idea if Source SDK works in Linux, I was talking about GoldSrc. I might give it a try tomorrow.

Nope, I'd love to, but Uni is just starting up properly, I don't want any responsibilities I don't need just now 'til I get into the swing of it all.

Also it looks to be leaning towards Source, which I have no experience with.

ATTENTION new source mappers: This is a perfect opportunity to get your feet wet with the Source SDK. You don't have to do anything amazing, just take what has been done previously and add something.

You'll also have the added benefit of directly looking at other peoples work to see firsthand how things are done; we can place newbies toward the end of the queue so this works better ;)

ALSO, I DO like TJB's idea that we all get two passes at the map.

You'll be toward the end of the queue so don't fret too much, but i would definitely install HL2DM and get the Source SDK running soon as is convenient.

you don't need hl2 to run and map for hl2dm. You will probably need the SDK base as well as the SDK itself but don't worry - steam sets it all up for you.

I love this idea but it seems to need more structure. And better collaboration methods rather than, ok I did something here you go and so on.

1. Some one should be in charge, come up with what you all want to out put.

2. Brainstorm and discuss the design intentions amongst eachother.

3. Decide how it will be layed out and who will do what.

4. Begin and keep eachother updated on wip and allow everyone to criticize eachother's work as it is produced so that in the end it can all work together towards a similar goal.

Yea I know what you mean in that you don't want it to feel idea confining, but if everyone collaborated together on the idea it could be free form in the way ideas grew on to eachother and in doing so they would relate rather than being way out there.

It would be cool to see the idea grow in this thread.

This thread is the pot and you are all planters, standing around it watering it and trimming it as it grows. :ciggie:

Pony: we already decided it will be source, so.. perfect time to get some experience with the engine tho if you change your mind.

zeeba: I agree. we just need that one good idea or theme idea, and then we can build ideas from there like wildfire. Soon as archie decides what engine we're using +P

Ok Arch NP. Will you have time to particiapte normally then with your two 24-hour sections, plus maybe a bit of consulting wisdom? (y/n) =)

Unless someone is willing to step up as zeeba said and be the project leader, i say we just go for it and have each person build on top of the next person's work, SO, if anyone has any general ideas on theme or structure, now is the time to voice that! ;)

Question: can we dick around with an embedded countdown timer so we don't have to wonder about timezonesies and stuff? (this way, the next guy in line knows exactly when his start time will be and reverse)

Maybe something like the competition timer? maybe one of us can get mode powers for this so we can adjust the first post, listing whose turn it is and when their time is up. (forgive me if i'm making this too complicated!)
