That would be a perfect entry if it we're a car Unbreakable! Does this mean you're joining the minicompo? :o

WCD: I'm not judging, but I would say that first and foremost, the structure, detail, and realism of your car will hold the greatest weight, making everything else secondary. (a: would you agree?)

That said, the environment, textures, sounds, etc all add to the immersion of the map, so adding a nice environment can't hurt, but can only help you ;)

Your only limited by the limits you impose on yourself! :)

I'm going to try a combination of the original textures and some of my own. Most of the HL textures are usable for 1000 other things besides for which they were originally intended!

Muzz: You're telling me you can texture those V shuttles--I see you updated it!--, and that orbiter, and you can't make textures for a little car?! Sorry if I don't believe you! :P

Here's the updated awards:
User posted image
The first set 3 awards are the newly scaled standard awards, recently rescaled by Rim. The little one next to it is the most recent size we've been using (for comparison).

The next set are Tetsu0's new minimark--which he made in Hammer! To reiterate, minimarks are given as paricipatory commendations for entering compos, but they're also given for contributions such as judging, creating content for the site, or if you have really big boobs. :o

I rescaled them to be bigger, enough to accomadate a label (so you know what you got one for). I'm still not sure how to label these. The first award would just be a commendation for joining the Kitchen compo, but not placing. The second labeled "contributor" would be recieved for judging or some other, but there's a problem: for what? and for what compo?

This leads to the next two that don't have labels, but just numbers. The first numbered minimark would signify participating in compo #9--kitchen--, and the second would signify being a contributor in some way to compo 9--probably judging.

Maybe a combination of these would be in order? What do you think?

And finally, the Special Contribution award. It's oddly sized, but I like that because it stands out. These are given for only once in a while for huge contributions, like ZombieLoffe Deisigning/coding the website! What do you think?

Please give me some feedback on this stuff, so I can standardize it, and make the appropriate awards for everybody. This way, they'll all share the consistent uniformity goodness! :P

Eventually, maybe we'll add an awards tab to the page, and show user/award clusters or something, as well as explaining what the awards signify to the n00bs. :)

Check out my profile to see what the awards look like in real-life!

I still don't really understand it, but it sounds wildly stupid to buy all this expensive HD stuff and not be able to achieve that quality on your screen... wtf!?

Well, I tried reading the article, and didn't make i much past the first 2 paragrahs before I faded out of consiousness and declared Um... wtf am I reading again?

Maybe somebody could give a nice simple summary of the main points? If it's true that this content protetion is going to impede the flow of free stuff, but not really protect it--an annoyance more than anything--, and that it is going to take up a considerable chunk of system resources is really very discouraging.

It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how fast we make processors or how cheap ram/HDD space become, we keep coming up with bullshit like this to bog it down :(

Can't someone "clone" windows so we don't have to put up with this ever-increasing bullshit from microsoft? (Or does it take like 30 years till somebody can legally do that ?) /rant /crying

Breaking News LULZ!!1~

a, winning the last competition, is taking the option to facilitate the next comp!!1~ (We really need to come up with a nickname for you a... your name is far from unambiguous!
Minicompo #10: Build a Car

It can be any car you want. Make it detailed and without errors. Not building the interior will will result in a serious point deduction. (a: I deleted your PM before I realized I was deleting the rules to the compo! Please make any corrections for me, and I'll update the Compo 10 rules in here and on the website.)

Standard Rules Apply.

And as per the new standard rules, this compo will last for two weeks--14 February--, or when at least 5 entries are recieve. As always, any overflow--above 5--entries present in the thread will be accepted at the time of closing.
If you haven't already, check out the new website ZombieLoffe made for us! If you have suggestions on how the site could be better, please let us know here in the thread!

And lastly but not leastly, award updates!

Rimrook has redone the awards for our profile pages and the website so they look prettier, and are one standard size. I'll edit them all, and post them up in here to replace your current profile awards in a little while.

I'm also going to resize/alter the minimark award Tetsu0 built for us, so you can all update those too!

WCD: The Gif transparency isn't really crucial--you can just cut it out and match the background color without much trouble--, but it certainly makes it easier! What do you mean by ant-aliased?

The site is pretty complete for what it is. It's really just a place to showcase compos past/present, and relate limited news. I don't envision it ever having any database stuff or interactivity. At the most, maybe a shoutbox, and I don't even know if that involves DBs or not, but probably--Zombie?

I hope you join in the compos! #10 will be up in a day or so. :)

Your awards are wickedly wicked! Now we have standard profile awards!! I'll work on adding text to them all and posting them so all our profiles look uniform!

Thanks again Rimrook!!! :)

I found out how to do gif transparency, is there anything i should fix?
If you think the current profile awards need reworking--see above--, then go for it. I think they look ok but you are a professional ;)

If I have to edit, how do I preserve the gif transparency?--could never figure that out myself :

I think the icons look great as is. Only the silver and special contribution look similar, and since the SC award won't be given out too often, it shouldn't be a problem imo.

Thank you!!1 :)

For example, I want to add an awards tab, to show full-size pictures of Rim's gold/silver/bronze, the minimark, and special contributor awards, but I want to keep the page simple. what do you guys think?

Rim: If you're listening, could you possibly design a special contributor award in the spirit of your other ones? Keep in mind they are going to be scaled pretty small: around 100x100.

Muzza: K. If I don't hear from a soon, compo 10 is yours. :)

Whoa! :o (Just give him the Forum Award already, he totally deserves it! :P)

I read your input at least 10 times, and I think I finally understand. It's not that you worded your post unclearly, or said anything that was too pointed... I guess it's just difficult sometimes to admit/accept certain truths concerning your own work, no matter how it's presented!

Anyway I throroughly appreciate your input, and I agree with everything you said.

Scale. I don't know why my recent couple of maps have been so huge, but you're right, they are leauges too large. I think my current propensity to build large maps has a psychological component of some sort, maybe that I'm too cocky/confident--at least in terms of brushwork, lol.

I tried the chase_active paramater--which is really cool btw!--, and the scale seemed ok to me, which means It may be necessary for me to deflate my ego before I work on size adjustments! Therapy here we come!!1 :P

Planning. You hit that one right on the head--I didn't think it was so obvious!

My mindset with this and other themed maps was that certain things had to be in the map, and I just had to figure a way to link the "mandatory" units together somehow as I got to them. As you astutely observed, I just dove in to brushing out the map, without any planning other than looking at reference pics. :(

Subsequently, I really need to start listening to your's and Captain P's advice on preplanning and layouts! (I've already started some concept sketches for my compo 23 map lol :) )

Lastly, I agree about the poor vertical relief, and I already have some ideas on how to work on remedying it ;)

Anyhoo, I'm putting Clarity, and Hothworld V2 on hold for the time being, and adjusting my focus on preplanning for Compo 23. It will be really nice to work on something other than the Star Wars/space theme for awhile. :glad: :glad: :glad:

K. Compo 9 Results:

The low number of entries for this minicompo was more than made up for by the astonishing quality of the entries recieved!

The attention to detail in general was far beyond what I expected in some areas, and less than adequete in others. In terms of Brushwork, all entries are superb: beautifully-stunning work, intricate, creatively interesting, and cleanly done.

Both maps were intereactive to varying degrees but for the most part I was impressed--though I was surprised nobody made a trap of an oven or fridge or sink, which was just begging to be done imo.

Texturing and lighting varied in both maps form adequate to better, but for the most part I was pleased with it all.

Where both maps could have really improved would be in terms of small props. There were about 1000 possiblilities for easy-to-make, funny props like: silverware, cups, all kinds of food, a myriad of appliances, and lots of other things--all worldbrushed of course. Oh well, whatevs! :P

Some small letdowns in all entries were the use of that goddamn morning desert sky and an utter lack of sounds--not including some standard button/door sounds, which were ok in and of themselves. Both of these small aspects while not directly relating to the compo would have improved the maps considerably, while not taking up too much development time.

Spectre by a

The spectacular brushwork, creativity, and attention to detail of this last-minute entry shocked me, frankly. The fridge itself in this would have probably won the fridge prop compo way back, not to mention the other nice props and great utilization of glass.

A well-deserved first place! Kudos! :)

Kitchen - by Tetsu0

This entry blew me away when I first saw it too. The intricacy of the cabinets and overall elegance of design of this kitchen is unmatched. However, as we all know, hard work can wear you down, and Tetsu0 left this beautiful map almost completely devoid of small props, which would ultimately take it out of the running for gold.

Tetsu0's entry also sported the nicest use of textures and the most cohesive interactivity with drawers and cabinets--there opening/closing were timed perfectly, and easy to use. They wern't perfect however, and more things could have been interactive like the sink and fridge, but whatevs... Another superb entry!

The Bronze is awarded posthumously to Caboose. :P

Seriously, though unfinished and unsubmitted, in a moment of weakness I decided to give caboose the bronze for the excellent looking screens he sumbitted here in the thread. When I first looked at his screens, I thought the map was for Source! Needless to say, it's worthy of a medal imo.

@Caboose: Please upload your BSP/RMF to the Map Vault, and link to it in here, to make your "posthumous" award official! :)

@a: I'll leave it to you if you want to run the next compo. If you do, PM me the details!

Btw, since you don't have this in the Map Vault yet, here'smy full review of your map. (you can probably fit it in the map vault anyway by removing the minimod format, and wadicluding any textures that aren't stock HL. We can help you with that if you need it! :) )

If a declines, I'll facilitate compo 10.

Again, great work guys and thanks for participating!
