Could someone tell me how to make this a texture for Source?

That image doesn't even tile yet, so I'd suggest you work on that before anything else. :

Lots of shadows in it too. Not a good photo for a texture. There are loads of Source custom material tutorials - I suggest you read one.

God, you're such a showoff. You're all "look at me, I'm so 1337, I can make a good looking texture out of a crappy looking picture." :P Probably wasn't that hard though, eh?

How do I obtain the .vtf? I entered the info into notepad and saved it as a .vtf I don't have any tangible file for hammer though...

Update: It shows up as a purple and black checkered texture....

The info file you make with notepad is a VMT
You need to make a VTF file. Sometimes I wonder if having tutorials is actually useful at all in this site.

I used that tutorial but I didn't get it. I got the photo into targa and created a texture properties .vmt and now I don't know how to get the actual image.

Do you have photoshop?
There's good plugin which enables you to save VTF files directly. It makes the process much easier.

No, and isn't photoshop several hundred dollars? :aghast:

Not if you download it for the free.

sigh

get a program called VTFEdit.

all you have to do is import the pic, make sure 'auto create VMT' is on, then save to your materials directory.

and yeah, nobody actually buys photoshop, thats why its so expensive (the people who need to buy it like professionals and shit)

Good thinking ZL, but I'm way ahead of you.

I think I have VTFEdit.... now I'll have to dig up that ps plugin.

it just occured to me that the tutorial I wrote never made it to twhl and never found out why. You can find it at my website directory.

http://m0px.net/rimrook/texture_tutorial.zip

now why is it showing off if i share the knowledge of how to do that and no one acknowledges that i did so?

either way, i need to rewrite that tutorial anyhow. The power of highpass that makes the job easier (lazier might be a better word.)

should i stop doing stuff like that or something?

no. some people are just assholes.
i used that tutorial a while ago to make one of my first textures (that actually was half-decent), and would love a version of it on TWHL. perhaps you could do a series of techniques in a few tutorials?

yeah, i guess i could cover a few topics.

but still, why hasn't the first one made it to twhl yet? it was a long time ago, like since June of 2006.

According to Exos's rant, the Soundscape tutorial took 18 months to make it to twhl.

TWHL3 will see the end of such things.

it wasn't 18 months. exos is just a bitch - it was 6 months, tops. in TWHL3 tutorial creators will use bbcode to write their tuts up, and the mod just has to make sure it's okay.

Yeah. I've extensively planned out how the new tutorial system will work, which will make for a far quicker turn-around of drafts to a published tutorial.

Sweet. It will be nice to be able to; I just looked at my Diagnosing Problems tutorial, and it SERIOIUSLY needs a redo! Some of my tips are outright misinformation... I'm such a n00b!!1 :o

Yeah, stuff like that will be incredibly simple.
