You can still compile with HDR...you just won't be able to see the results. :P

HDR isn't nessecary for this compo and won't be factored into the results.

I'm hoping to get a fair turnout for this compo, so don't disappoint me!

Imo, this compo doesn't seem too hard. You have a pretty strong base to work of (something that the lack of makes mapping difficult for a lot of people, myself included) and you're basically free to go nuts. Get mappin' peeps!

in Parallax mapping Post #189213
There's information on the Valve wiki on how to implement parallax mapping into a mod. It's surprisingly simple. Obviously not all graphics cards support parallax mapping. I'm gonna guess that only relatively high end cards support it (DX9) and I'm also gonna guess that it's a shader model 3 effect but I could be wrong.

As for PD0's look, although I was relatively impressed with some screenshots, others just had a very very strange look to me, a comment replicated by many gaming sites. As much as I had hoped that PD0 would reclaim Rare's position as a premier design team that not only excels at pushing the boundries of next-gen graphics but also a team that succeeds in creating a fantastic gaming experience, both in SP and MP, well...they didn't.

IMPORTANT! Basically, you're free to add parts, change parts, so long as it still retains a hint of a resembelence to the original screenshot. For example, you could go ahead and give it a Dust theme: just retain the basic shape of the buildings and go nuts with the textures.

in Computer Troubles Running Hammer Post #189007
Your background processes are most likely causing you a fair bit of grief. Have you scanned for spyware/adware/viruses lately?

Try forcing Hammer to run in DX7 mode. You can do this by creating a shortcut to Hammer, and adding the line "-dxlevel 7" in the target field.

Hello guys

I'm the creator of this competition and I shall be judging, so all questions can be directed to me.

Pepper: Yes, it's from Blue Shift. I decided against HL because Rabid had already whored that to bits, and OpFor doesn't provide a lot of undestroyed stuff.

Kasperg: Think of it like the media releases from the mod "Black Mesa". They show the old screenie, then the new one, which while it looks completely different, still maintains the essence of the old shot.

Xyos: I disallowed custom content to allow everyone to have a go. Not everyone can make models or create materials. Besides, being limited to CS:S and HL2 will give you people who bemoan the HL2 and CS:S content a bit of a challenge.

IMPORTANT! Basically, you're free to add parts, change parts, so long as it still retains a hint of a resembelence to the original screenshot. For example, you could go ahead and give it a Dust theme: just retain the basic shape of the buildings and go nuts with the textures.

I wanted to try something different for this compo. I had always liked the idea of remaking an old screenshot, mainly because there's already a strong basis to work off. If any of you are still confused, just PM me and I'll gladly help you out.

in Hammer 3d view problem Post #188385
Yeah, there's a problem with the SDK. It's affecting a variety of people (myself included) but I think it's limited to those who own ATI graphics cards (although not all ATI users are affected). At the moment, there's no definate fix. To help with the problem, try forcing Hammer to launch in DX8 mode. This can be done by making a shortcut to Hammer, going into the Properties of the shortcut and adding "-dxlevel80" in the Target field. So the target field will look similar to this:

"C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppsant292sourcesdkbinhammer.exe" -dxlevel80

This should help, but it won't fix it completely. At the moment, models, the SDK models and selection boxes are affected.

Depending on what you're mapping for will determine if you use a trigger_multiple or a trigger_once. If you're mapping for single player HL and the player doesn't need to go through the door again, you can use the trigger_once. If you're mapping for deathmatch, and the player will go through the door again, you'll need to use the trigger_multiple.

in [CS:S] - de_venetia (WIP) Post #187950
Update time.

de_venetia, as you know it, is dead. Layout issues combined with mapping issues prevented me from wanting to actually finish the stupid thing. As such, the source code for it is currently in the capable hands of TheGrimReafer and he is currently making some strong efforts in finishing that version off.

However. From the ashes of de_venetia_v1 arose a new map: de_venetia_v2. As of yesterday, this version is also dead: a poor beta test brought upon by a very crappy layout forced an early death.

However! From the now regugitated ashes of V1 and V2 arrises a new map: de_venetia_v3! I have read a few design articles (mostly from Dave Johnston's excellent site, the creator of Dust, Dust 2 and Sienna) as well as sketched out various areas which'll hopefully ensure that this time the layout works. I'm attempting to implement a "figure 8" layout, similar to Dust and Dust 2 as well as multi-tiered gameplay (i.e. multiple levels).

Thanks to Daubster's excellent reference material, I'm creating something that more closely resembles Venice. Time will tell if the layout works, but in the meantime, you might want to check out this early, undetailed screenshot. I'm holding back on the detail until I run a successful layout test, which'll be soon I hope.

A trigger is a brush-based entity. Now, if I recall correctly, what you'll have to do is make a brush textured in AAATrigger texture. Place this brush on the side of the door that you want it to open from (what'll happen is that the player will hit this invisible trigger in-game and the door will open). Make sure the brush doesn't spill over the door so that it might accidently be triggered on the other side.

Select the brush and click the "ToEntity" button that's on the right hand side of the Hammer window. Select "trigger_multiple" from the list that appears. In the Target field, put the name of the door in (so name the door if you haven't: you can do this by selecting and right-clicking the door in a 2D view, scrolling down to "Properties" and given the door a name in the Name field). In the Delay before trigger field, put 0. In the Delay before reset field, put 0.

That should be it. Read our Door tutorial if you need help on making a moving door.

It is intended as a multiplayer console. It's meant to invite non-gamers into the fray so they can easily pick up a Wii-mote and swing it around.

I got over the naming of it because in reality, it makes sense. Announcing the name a week before E3 was pure genius. And let's face, Nintendo's arguement of popular stuff having weird names (the iPod, Google and Ikea were a few examples) is totally true.

And heck, it's still the same console (one that I will be buying).
