I stopped using IE in March you Sweedish cockslave! :P
Only 1/3 of those links have IE on the desktop--if you bothered to look...

And ever since, the healing/protective light of Mozilla Corp. has lighted my way...
The reason I know, Is cause around that month, I stopped saving 'favourites' for IE.

Anyone know how to save firefox bookmarks--like individual links in IE--btw? Don't ask why I save them, just an OCD thing, I think... :D

Alright, i'll comment for each pic 1-7:

1. Fountain looks ok. Lack of detail of the house is horrifying though.

2. Chandelier is cool. Would be cooler if the lights were on. The rest looks pretty neat.

3. Nice, exept that wood texture is pants. Picture frame looks nice.

4. I love those ceiling lights!

5. Looks nice. W00t for the spiral staircase, if that's what it is--dark.

6. Nice. Reminds me of maison de l'Merilvingian from the last Matrix.

7. Hallway looks blocky and quite pants.

That creates a new problem in two parts:

Probably because teh cs skies are pretty bad. Is there a paticular reason why they have to be cs?

My mind has repressed most depressing moments of my life. Not that I don't feel like shit anyway, but I've got nothing to talk about.
This belongs in the Sour Grapes thread! The funny thing about repressed moments, unfortunately, is they don't always stay that way...

I did a search for 'Mapping tips' and came up with no less than 5 really good threads on this subject.

Maybe we should congeal them into one contiguous list/tutorial or something, perhaps in sections like:

You can play HL1 in 3rd person--Singleplayer or sv_cheats enable servers only--by simply typing chase_active 1 in the console?

Yeah I suppose my method is backwards compared to yours.

I add all the details, and then remove what I have to at the end. My real problem though, Is that I'm not so willing to change the layout. I guess I want to see what the map 'looks' like complete, before I chop it up for performance reasons.

After I become more experienced, and have a better idea about what can and can't be done, I'm sure I'll map more like you!

Try this for some more details on custom sounds using the ambient generic entity.

While the entity guide is dated, It's still useful for general Info. Search the forums for ambient_generic/custom sounds/pak/etc., for more detailed info.

A couple of notes:

Some HL sounds have cue points, and some don't. Ones with will loop continously 'till triggered off, and ones without will only play once until triggered again, regardless of flags/settings.

If you edit cue points on HL sounds--I use Goldwave--you'll need to include the edited .wavs with your map distribution. Hopefully the sound you need has cue points, so you don't have to mess with it.

I personally--while using a pak explorer--copy all the original HL sounds into my Hammer/sound folder. This way, I can check them out without another piece of software. 'Do the same thing with models and sprites too.

If you can't get it to work, check out someones map that has sound, and see how they did it. Decompile if you have too, but many maps here come with the .rmf file so you can edit/look.

Um, actually yes you could have. Atom's tutorial expains expert mode, and the documentation that explains all the command switches--full vis for example--comes with the compile tools. :

And what I said before was not meant as a slight. I was merely trying to point out that none of us knows everything, nor necessarily uses all the resources we have available to us.

Not true. I just activated 2 lights, 3 doors, and a sprite animation with one one button; giving those things the same name. :

Multimanager just gives you more flexiblity. It, unfortunately, is not without its own bugs...

That's bad design there, then, rowley... shouldn't take that long.
If by bad design you mean a large oudoor map, then you are correct. Unfortuantely, these are the only type of map I seem to have any interest in making.

My brushwork for this map is impeccable, in terms of always being on-vertex, no clipping, etc. In other words, clean, so I don't think there are any problems there.
Better would be, when detailing area's, to use the Cordon Compile tool.
Though I think your being just a little dramatic about skipping VIS during the early stages of the map, your advice is sound just the same.

I guess the bigger and more 'open' your map is , the more relevant skipping VIS is in terms of time-saving in the early stages, imo.

I always thought VIS/RAD didn't run when using Cordon, but I just found out how wrong I was! :)

The most important thing I could think of to add, is something that will save you lots of compile time, and something I've only just started doing myself.

While your developing your map, run CSG, RAD, and BSP, but not VIS untill the final stages, and then run with full VIS.

For example, here are compile times for a map I'm currently workning on:

csg...6 seconds
vis....16 minutes
rad...23 seconds
bsp...3 seconds

As you can see, If I run VIS everytime, I have to wait almost 18 minutes to check between compiles, which for a highly impatient person like myself, is simply unacceptable.

By skipping VIS, 'till the end, you will save oodles of time, and be able to more easily remember what you've changed between compiles.

Almost done. Just have to finisht the reciever/optics, and stock.

Starting to get very comfortable with all 3 scaling buttons, so now my life is much easier. Oh and btw, wehn's the next compo?
