Xyos: I see what you're saying, BUT just because it's the STORY is fictional, doesn't mean there can't be a lot of things in it that are true. I Watched a movie about the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. It was historical FICTION, yet that battle still happened and many of the people in the movie existed back then. Many quotes taken from real civil war generals etc. Just because something is in the fiction section in a bookstore doesn't make EVERYTHING about it completely false. Because Philosophy books are in the "fiction section" at america's largest bookseller, barnes and Noble.

I dunno, isn't coal the HUGE cause of acid rain and other stuff? We do have a lot of coal, but the way it's mined and processed and used are ALL so eco-unfriendly. It'd be great to find a way though.

Well, the idea is to use petroleum to create the FIRST hydrogen cells, then use nuclear energy or other hydrogen to run the plants after that. Getting started will be the hardest part.

Seventh-Monkey: I think we don't communicate too well. First, the rest of the thread seems like a lot of whining aobut gas prices and how the companies laugh all the way to the bank etc. Here's what I meant: If they find a new alternative to petroleum, they won't have to make ALL NEW CARS to house it. they can simply make a retrofitting kit that replaces the most common engine sizes in the most common types of cars. I was not suggesting any certain TYPE of fuels, since I have no knowledge of what works and what doesn't and what they even HAVE nowadays. Other than clean hydrogen and gas. Anyway, I don't claim to know everything, but I'm getting a little sick of when people think I know nothing because I am not certified in some area or another. (i know i'll catch a lo of crap for this, but) I'm actually a MENSA-certified genius when it comes to IQ scores. I know a lot of crap about a lot of crap. This allows me to know just how much I don't know. People who think others think they know everything just think they know everything.

Orph: I don't even think this IS a flamewar, really. anyway, open-mindedness is a trait that many claim when choosing to side with the minority. Open-mindedness can only be achieved by giving all sides of an issue equal validity.

Xyos: I'm not saying the ANYONE's philosophy is better than anyone else's. That is what you need to realize. Philosophies are just opinions on how life is. In The Republic, "The allegory of the cave" is pretty much THE storyline of the matrix.(i.e. Someone is enlightened and goes back to save the rest) So what are you on about? What makes PLATO's philosophy so much better than anyone else's? Sure he thought about it a lot, but you don't know how much Hugh has thought about his, and you don't know what books he has read or who his mentors are.

You people need to realize that just because someone disagrees with what you think or what is established, doesn't mean that they are stupid. If you WANT to beleive this, then all of you who are pushing for gay rights and new US foreign policies and alternatives to oil or ANY other change, under this line thinking, are very stupid because these things are already thought to be a certain way by the majority of people. I don't think that "all weak people should die" I think that all weak people should learn to be stronger instead of being babied by a society that rewards thier weakness by giving them free money.

People accused of minor crimes do not go to jail for very long. And their employers have to give them their jobs back if their prison term is of a certain length and a few other stipulations. Plus, they don't take all your stuff when you go to jail.

We can't support people just because they commit crimes. They would not have been IN prison if they had not offended the first time, so why should society have to pay for them? Any poor person could just go to jail and get 3 square meals a day and do nothing but watch TV and get paid for making license plates. let them do something useful, let them give back to the society that they took from (is that better that "debt to society?")

What we NEED is for the government to buy the gas companies. Then we pay a bit higher taxes and gas at the pump is FREE! YAY

We just need to stop making cars that USE gas. and sell engine conversion kits for current common engine sizes. Just buy the kit, have a mechanic swap it out, it bolts right up. simple.

After filling my head with Nietzsche's crap and freud's problems, I've figured out that reading other people's philosophies on life don't give you your OWN philosophy. Just because you may have read someone else's philosophy doesn't mean that you can negate Hugh's just because he's come up with his by himself. If anyone deserves to be put down, it's you. Jobabob, Natural selection and religion are just fine together. In fact we see it all the time in the bible. You know, at least with Atheism, you are not afraid of a commitment. Either there IS a god or there ISN'T. Also, I think that atheism takes more faith to believe than Christianity. With Christianity, we beleive in SOMETHING. With atheism, you must beleive in the concept of NOTHING. and there is no such thing as NOTHING. Nothing doesn't exist and has never been sighted, never ben proven. so how do you vouch for your beleif in Nothing?

It would not be so bad if all the "green alternatives" were not bought up, and locked away by the OIL companies. What needs to happen is that we need to outlaw oil except for VERY few applications. start with Hydrogen already, it makes WATER instead of smog FFS. After 100,000 years, if all cars were converted to hydrogen, we STILL would not have enough extra water to flood new Orleans.

God and Science are not mutually exclusive. Who do you think set up the laws of physics? Sure everyone KNOWS that things like gravity and friction exist, but who here can tell me WHY they exist? The whole "scientific method" by which we form all of our "scientific laws" is nothing but faith in the unknown. What is an experiment based on a hypothesis if not faith? Faith is nothing but basing your actions on your idea of how things work.

So you choose to beleive that humans will figure everything out eventually, when illiteracy rates are the same as they were in the 19th century. Now THAT's faith!
Just remember how many times Science has been revised and proven wrong -- blatantly. Then think of how many times Christians have revised the bible. Zero. The only time someone revises it, is when they want to start thier own religion of which they are the leader, and from which they make money.

One of the things I find quite laughable about the religions which enforce it. It's not love if it's not legally binding! Stupid.
