in Visited by aliens?? Post #209238
Oh God.
Why would anyone taking over the world, let alone a group of "aliens", announce themselves, admitting they are involved in a plan to enslave mankind and risk jeopardising the entire operation as well as cause a massive uprising?
If some alien race has taken over the world then surely they would be smart enough to know that it would be more beneficial to them to either completely enslave us, or exterminate us all together. If they thought it better to stay hidden, then they are a dumbass race because to stay hidden would mean you have pretty much no control over things. What are they controlling in the first place? Our lives? How can they control our lives without us knowing any hint of their existance? What do you think our lives could be like if this supposed "evil race" wasn't "here"(I use quotations to emphasize skeptisism, not a theory)? They would have to have amazing technology to get here in the first place, but I highly doubt they would be the stereotypical aliens with mind-controlling powers and all that jazz.

Also, the idea of taking over a planet like Earth, from an alien race at least, doesn't seem very logical in the first place. Earth is a tiny mother fucker and there's almost nothing of value [to us] around it (not to mention the lack of planets with any form of dense atmosphere at all around it) so what race could possibly benefit from taking over this little speck we live on? We have our crap on the planet, but there's nothing anywhere near us. Hell, even our sun sucks donkey balls. The only purpose I see in that is for research on humans (aliens to them) and if that's the case then it's really not domination in the first place, but just an experiment of sorts.

If we have then the extra terrstial beings(kekeke big words) who have visited us would have to be far more technologically advanced than us, like thousands or millions of years ahead of us. Their technology would have to be allow them to efficiently travel millions upon millions of miles not to mention the kind of fuel they would need, whatever that fuel may be.
It's possible, and we all know that there is intelligent life other thanh us out there somewhere, but personally I don't think it's happened yet.

I've played both games, thank you very much. Counter Strike blows, the community even more so.
Well I've played your mom! Oh SNAP!
I don't map for HL (because I don't have it ) but I know that Source is fun to map for because it's always a fun challenge to map something to look as realistic to real-life as possible. I often times map an enviornment simply to see how life-like I can make it.

To make a true comparison, though, I need to grab a copy of HL and map for it.
If you like working with brushes and point entities you will probbaly like Goldsource mapping a lot more than Source mapping. It's the props that annoy me the most about Source mapping, too. Props are great, but Source mapping takes prop use waaaaaay too far. Most Source maps are made almost entirely of prop models with very little actual complex brushwork.

What the hell dude? What kind fo a qeuestion is that? Half Life is still popular because it's the greatest game ever made!
I like mapping for Goldsrc because impressive brushwork is all the more satisfying when you can pull it off, plus it's always fun to see how far you can push it.

It's funny. Crossfire is probably the most basic default map for HLDM, and yet its the most popular. Rapidcore, on the other hand, is the most impressive visually, and yet noone ever plays it.
I like rapidcore, it needs more loving.

The ceiling on the right screenshot looks like ass because point lights were used, though. Texlights with light_spots under the brushes would have looked better than both.

How about genre mapping mini compos? Fantasy, horror, futuristic, etc.
Of course by doing this there's a risk of bias of personal taste but that could be the case with all competitions.

Penguinboy nailed it. Thanks, I never thought of that. Ill try the same thing with the fade too. Sounds like it should work but crazy things happen when you're working Valve stuffs.

Most of your post made no sense, Grim. Nobody ever brought up grammar, you left phrases incomplete(supposed to be sefl explanitory? They aren't), and I never complained about my advice. I'm explaining to these people why I can't use their method, it's a lot better and less rude than just saying "no, that won't work, give me another idea". I'm not just going to humor someone and say "ok, sure I'll do that" and abandon the whole point of asking for help.

You do realize that by doing that the result would would actually increase the total file size of the sound by having 2 wavs instead of one, making it even worse than having one long sound.

8 and 8, the lowest possible quality, is still a few megs. There's got to be a way around it, there's always a way to get around things like this.

So how about that modulated fade?
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-01 01:41:17 UTC
in Double Whammy Post #208102
Massive file size, plus it needs to loop itself for a few more minutes after fading in.

in Double Whammy Post #208100
Two problems:
-I need a sound to take a long time to fade in. I mean a long time, like 2 or 3 minutes long. The problem lies in the maxiumum time ambient_generics allow for faing in, most of you should know what it only allows 100 god-knows-what-measurements-of-time-it-uses. Changing the actual wav to be a 2 minute long sound is out of the question. My settings are:
Volume: 10
Dynamic presets: none
Fade in time: 120
fade out time: 50
-"Play everywhere" and "start silent" flags are ticked.
If there's not a way to do this I'm going to be pissed.

-I need an env_fade to go from nothing to its full effect in the same 2 or 3 minutes. The problem is that because the modulate flag is ticked the fade time is all screwy. Not only does it not take the time it should be to fade in(it takes about ten seconds instead of the 2 minutes it should be) but it also doesn't last longer than those 10 seconds. It just cuts off long before it should, but probably because it reached its full effect, "thought" it was done and turned itself off. My settings are:
Duration: 120
Hold Time: 0
Alpha: 255
Color: 128 128 128
-"Modulate" flag is ticked

A general atmosphere compo could cover almost all of those. Special effects could have its but lighting, sounds, sprites, texturing, etc could all be in an atmosphere mini compo.
