What do you use, if anything at all?

I used Fast Video Download addon for Firefox for ages, but upon clean installing my system yesterday, I found after reinstalling the addon, it no longer works... It was great for downloading flash games and youtube videos.

What do you use?

I made an image of my C drive before doing the clean install, so i might try to load the image and copy/paste my old firefox directory to my new build, and see if that makes the addon work again...

Yeah but first things first. I would just recommend starting simple for your first model, you can make the railing post more advanced when you learn more about milkshape. again, try skinning and compiling it to half-life, and see what i looks like in there. (very likely making these overly fancy will be a waste of time and mapping resources, but you can judged that for yourself in-game)

Hopefully a more experinced modeller will chime in and let you know about what are acceptable poly counts (Rim, World Crafter, Pepper, among others)

about the grid, it's been eons since i used milkshape, so i can't say. I know i'm sounding like a parrot here, but again, i would search for the best, most relevant milkshape tutorials you can find, go through every one, (you'll find some are really helpful and comprehensive and some are very vague.

If i get some time later, i'll try to dig up some old milkshape tutorials if i still have them, or provide you with some links. There are probably whole forums dedicated to milkshape and mabye even still some around dedicated specifically to HL1 modelling. (it's been too long i don't remember any atm)

Problem: Navigating Hammer 4 3D view is VERY slow/jumpy.

Fix: turn down "model render distance" and "detail render distance" under tools/options/3D views. (For my computer, I've found turning either of these up past 500 units, makes the 3D view choppy and utterly unlook-at-able :))

One may be more of a gfx card drag than the other, but i haven't tested that far... experiment to see what the optimum settings for your rig are!

Maybe start a new thread? I must reiterate there are TONS of milkshape tutorials out there to answer your questions, plus a lot of info compiling to HL smd (usable format for HL) on this site. do a little diggin you'll be surprised = )

1)google "clone objects milshape" A lot of the results are for milkshape tutorials for The Sims, but you'll be able to use many of the techniques--such as cloning brushes(objects) in making your HL models.

2)Not sure what are acceptable wpoly counts for Half-life. I think as long as your in-game performance is ok you should be fine. As you become a better modeller, you'll find what are the most efficient ways to build things.

Nice that you got it to compile! You could try making those sails/ropes and other complicated structures into func_illusionaries and you might be able to compile the whole thing.

You could use a transparent texture for the railings too, but yeah a model would work good too. Something that simple you could probably make yourself in milkshape, and the help of a couple tutrorials. {there are lots of support and tutorials for milkshape)

Pepper: don't kill the kittens!

Rim/Pepper: since you guys obviously like texture mapping in max, point me to a book or tutorial on texture mapping(for half-life) i can actually follow, and i'll take back my scandalous commetns. I've tried at least 10 tutorials and failed or given up every time. Maybe i just don't have the patience to figure it out... I dunno, hammer texturing just seems intuitive and easy to me, even with very complex shapes, I can texture anything in hammer rather quickly...[/wall of text]

If you get glitches, try extracting the gfx/maps/models/sound/models/rooms.wad to your valve folder, and see if you still get the glitches that way. (depending on when you downloaded last time, you may not have got the latest version, due to a filefront hosting problem which was my fault(if someone knows how to update filefront files while preserving the download link, please let me know!)

JeffMOD: you should see some, but not all, of the requested changes in this version.

Muzz: Yes I know it works, but remember i told you of two times when i used the 'visible objects only' flag, and those parts of the map hidden were all turned to world brushes? Whether the flag was the culprit or not, i don't use it anymore just to be safe. (i just put a big block around any items i don't want compiled now, works just as well...)

I agree too that the camera sequence should be tweaked but not eliminated. Tetsu0 did that so he could have a more complex room, and still stay within the rules of the project...(making the other areas explorable would make it more than one room technically).

I would advise compiling frequently from the beginning (if you plan to make a playable map). Compiling frequently helps you catch/isolate errors much easier than building an entire map and then trying to run it. Errors and problems can pile up quickly making your .rmf completely impossible to debug.

Compiling often also helps you get a feel for when you start running into limits of what the compiler and game can handle, all errors aside. Can't stress enough how important this is...

Still looks bomb tho.. = )

Are you still using gmax? Rim and Pepper are modelling Gods, but i really believe you'd be better off with milkshape. It's only like $30 for the program and unliminted updates afaik, and it was pretty much created to make HL models..
Technically, this IS related to half-life.
Wow the first post i can think of ever agreeing with Darkie.

Darkie: Have you ever considered changing your username to something, um... i dunno, less-stupidly pointless? really...... anti-lulz would be much better imo, or really, anything else (except of course: penisjuice, poopsex and other stupifyingly even more chav names obv)

That DOES look great fold! do you have any shots of it compiled yet? (i would definitely recommend using HLFix if you don't already... it'll reduce many brushwork-related headaches for you)

Yeah, grouping the images can also be helpful. Once they're grouped you can also hide them to reduce the visual clutter in your map while you're developing it...

You're not supposed to be able to go backwards, so the locked door is on purpose. If you walk in front of the laptop and hit the use key, it should trigger a multimanager triggering sounds, but i can't say why it didn't work for you = ( So there are three strobes: 1 for the vending machine, 1 for the tv, and one outside the door... shall i eliminate them all?

All: upon further testing i noticed some of the errors you mentioned:

-Sky glitch in JeffMOD's room: I found you could actually see HLife's map through the sky... i can't believe i never noticed that before!.. i made some adjustments, so hopefully you won't see the glitch anymore (compiling now)

-Strobes. I left the strobes in the cave hallway, because i think it fits, but if the general consensus is it's ugly, i'll eliminate it. (It's actually not a strobe, but light_spots with custom appearance to give a "flickering lanteren" look.

-strobes between raver's/rimrooks map: I eliminaged the flickering light_spot from that hallway.

-strobes in muzza's map: yeah you're right, there is erroneous flickering on the top part of your map, which seem to coincide with the flickering texture lighting i put in the elevator. I rendered the server room invisible, so maybe that change in the map and a recompile will be enough to fix the glitch, but if not, i'll just remove the flickering texture from the elevators.

If I've left anything out, or if anybody finds more issues, pleez let me know and i'll try to address them in the next version. I'm also going to delete my HL content and redownload it from steam, and then try playing it in minimod format again to see if my HL is just buggered. As i said before, I have no way to test for WON, because i can't install it on my machine..

Yeah pepper but for cs 1.6 wouldn't he be better off using Milkshape?

I used to have a shitload of gmax tutorials, but they were all lost with "the purge"... = (
I remember when i used gmax i found that a lot of the plugins/tutorials/whatevs were actually for Max NOT Gmax i couldn't get many things to work. Also, i never once successfully compiled a gmax file to Half-life .smd, no matter how hard i tried. I gave up rather quickly and bought a regular version of max...

And didn't Rim say he had some texture mapping/animation problems using max with HL? didn't he end up using Milkshape to do some of those things properly? RIM ARE YOU THERE? = )

I tested in WON seeing as it wasn't configured for a steam mod.
well fuck that's what's causing my problems with running the mod then? I guess we'll have to provide separate WON and Steam versions?

URBY/MUZZ: run it in steam--not minimod version--, and tell me if you get the lighting bugs. Also, you SHOULDN'T see the glitches through JeffMOD's roof(in steam version at least), as i ran full vis so the skybox will hide things behind it.

That's right you didn't, but i took certain liberties with your map. I can change back, but why don't you play the current version first, and tell me if you like any of the changes? I also added a small surprise if you "use" the laptop, heh. :badass:

zeeba-G: See if it crashes the normal way--not in minimod but through the valve folder). It doesn't crash for me in minimod, but like i posted earlier, causes lots of errors. So, at least i'm not the only one who's having problems with the minimod version then?(did you run it in WON or Steam?)

weird weird. I don't recall any such "dogey strobe lighting" in any of the maps, but i'll play it again when i get home. (xcept maybe in JeffMod's map and hallway) Weird also, that the minimod version works fine for you guys but not for me... hmpf. again, i'll retest it when i get home.

Muzz: yeah, after i had that little problem i told you about using "visible objects only" i don't use it anymore. I can remove the server room in the next compile though totally. again, i don't remember the strobing at all in your map. did you playtest the other version--non-minimod--, and see if the effect still happens?

Anyway, i'll retest later and get back to you guise! thanks for looking at it! = )

edit: did you guise test in steam or WON? i've only tested in steam as my x64 will not allow me to install won...

I totally want to use the minimod format, but my hands are tied if it won't run properly that way. Like muzz said, i don't want to clutter peoples valve folders with custom content, and i didn't even think of the "titles" issue you mentioned.

You want to give it a test and see how it runs on your machine? At the very least maybe you could examine the mod folder format and find a glaringly obvious error or omission causing the troubles...

God Mowgli that looks great so far! To elaborate on what Guinea pirate said, i would turn those trusses to func_illusionaries to save yourself clipnodes, or get rid of the brushwork altogether and use a transparent texture on a solid block. i mean, it looks really cool, but that kind of depth of detail for the most part will be lost on most players, and the much simpler transparent texture will look almost as spiffy (not to mention save you a lot of mapping resources imo).

Same goes from the massive amount of detail you have on that housing tower, i think you are going to run out of resources and you might find you have to scale back your design and use fancy texturing to get by, but hey, if you can pull it off, all the better!

YOur first set of pics look JUST LIKE a mixed housing complex--apartments, suites, and a big dining hall--, where i went to school. I shold share some of my screenshots with you for laughs = )

Anyway, i'd love to help beta test if you need it, just let me know! Your stuff looks really good... = )

Yeah i wish hammer 4 didn't clump all the model textures and sprites into the texture browser, and/or i wish i was smarter about using the texture browser filters, but meh. your suggestions help me in that area though so thanks. = )

If i do what you told me with renaming the header file, then i will have two "alyx head" textures when i browse, or will i be modifying the original?

This seems um, pretty simple to model, i mean if you can't even make this in gmax you might want to consider some very basic tutorials on how to use it.

Just go to vertex mode and ctrl-select the outer vertices on both ends, and drag them down. (for the third set of pics at least)

For the secod set of pictures i would just extrude the end faces out, and then weld back the extra vertices to get the desired shape. I know there is are many other ways to do this, but that's just the way i would go about it.

And btw why are you bothering with gmax anyway. hasn't it been unsupported/dead for quite sometime? What game are you modeling for?

yeah true, i should.

K alredy found a thing i don't like about IS. Uploading a file with the same filename doens't overwrite the existing one--Every hosting i've ever had previously does this--, it creates an entirely new entry... i tried editing the existing one but deleted the wrong pic, hence the broken link above. oh well...

Is there a way to overwrite/edit an ImageShack image whilst preserving the original link's location?

I've found i can comfortably watch hulu and edit maps at 1440x900, if i close all the screen elements on hammer. (i wish though everytime I hit SHIFT-A to bring up texture propterties, hammer 4 wouldn't keep "turning on" the texture properties screen element. :|

nothing is wadincluded, not that i can see that causing the errors i'm getting in minimod format:

-triggers stop working
-doors and other brush-based entities become invisible
-some brush-based entities(doors)seem to disappear altogether?!
