but how would someone else get ahold of a 1 player HL mod if they didnt belong to a mapping community like this. people dont randomly search the internet for hl mods. at least custom cs maps get played on servers, and beleive it or not, plenty of servers run custom maps, and i know plenty of people who enjoy custom maps more than defaults. so there :P

well, if what you say is true - that cs objectives get boring - then wouldnt that make HL a lil more boring seeing as it is limited to basically no objectives for multiplayer?

Dorian27: i think what CS lacks in Flashy Monsters n stuff, it makes up for in team based objectives, which sometimes are more interesting

i think this is the perfect place for people to place their opinion on which game is better to map for. i personally think CS is better. i think that custom CS maps have been very successful,

contrary to what others beleive
Kasperg: Custom maps for CS are very very rarely succesful. CS players are afraid of change, it's a fact. HL and HLDM allow for a little more fantastic world when it comes to mapping.

Ive worked on the map a little bit, the bar is nearly finished, and ive decided to make the outside lighting an almost dusk setting. also i have put a fire escape in, and changed one of the roadways into an alley instead with some dumpsters and such. does anyone know where i can get a police car texture, and perhaps a prefab? i would like to put a few outside the police station. also a police station sign texture. i am not to fond of spending too much time on making custom textures, but if anyone would like to make them, i would definately credit them. :biggrin:

You have to use a trigger_push with a delay before trigger and a kill target of some kind, never done it myself, but have pictured how to in my head.

I find the "brush based enteties" part of the manual very confusing. anyone with advise?
to make any brush an entiry, select it (so it turns red in camera view) and press Ctrl-T to turn it into an entity. it will bring up a properties window where you can select what entity you want it to be. doors can be tricky to start, but tool around with them a lil bit and youll figure it out.

Info: For this competition you must make a map with an archaic theme. by archaic i mean, antique, non-modern, old-fashioned
I ill be judging several aspects of the maps, from layout to originality, amount of detail, etc.
Restrictions:
1. Minimum requirement is a .bsp file that works with CounterStrike 1.6
2. You can add your own textures, sound or skies, but they have to be included in the BSP File
3. All entries must be zipped. Do not upload just the .BSP file.
4. For entries over 1MB, just add a link to where you have hosted it on the web, in a .txt file and upload the txt file in a ZIP.
5. It MUST run without error, No excuses!
6. This Compo Will Be based highly on Architecture, so make sure submissions look antique
7. There must be an objective relative to a storyline. (no fy, ka, or dm maps)

btw the flipout was just a joke.. and the topic of overscaled/underscaled maps is kind of overdone... but if anyone is interested, my girlfriend actually made a contribution to the mapping world. she came up with the idea of mapping the inside of the human body. i am not skilled enough to do this, and i dont have time to get and make custom textures to that extent, but i would be willing to sell this mapping idea for 2 simple paments of 19.95... or not. i just really want someone to map this, it would be soo freakin sweet. not even necessarily for CS, HL would do, as long as i could play it!

ive has mixed opinions... should i keep uo this unoffiial compo or give it up to some hl judging fool! (just kidding) but my idea was for a cs compo, if someone else wants to pick this theme up as a hl compo go ahead, in the meantime, ill think of a new CS one. so Onslaught, feel free to think of one.

havent you heard of de_rats or cs_mice, or any of those, i like those maps, they are always interesting, i would hope to see some entries where the player is too big for the map, like cs_assault_mini. it doesnt necessarily mean the players enter a shrinking machine. but are placed in an environment that is not actual size

Ive started. that doesnt say much, cuz i work 7:00 - 4:30 currently. and during when school comes around ill be there 7:00-2:00 then at work til 5 after that. and i have a girlfriend who hates that i map Shriek i know. but when i get a chance i do some. i have the basic layout done, with the bridge in with a control booth. and the bar is currently being worked on.

i wanted to limit the number of good weapons available for each team. for instance: 4 AKs and 12 MAC10s (just in case it is run a huge server) and for CTs 2 AUGs, 3 M4A1s, and 11 TMPs, also, i wanted to do something more original, and beleivable than the standard CS buyzone, which in my opinion is not realistic. if Terrorists were organizing an assault on a city, they would come prepared with weapons.

i was strongly considering another bombspot, like perhaps the power supply for the city, i want to stick with the theme of immobilizing the city. also on the topic of the rooftops. only select rooftops would be accessable, only strategically placed ones near the bombsite. also i wanted the gunshop to be a vulnerability, cuz it would cut down on EVERYone buying an awp and camping the rooftops (hence its location reletive to the bombsite). but maybe i will add more guns at the spawns, perhaps more TMPs and MAC10s. i dont want every average joe walkin around with an AK or an AUG. :P

i was planning on developing this for 1.6, cuz im a cheapo, and i dont feel like buying source :) i also plan on not making too many weapons at the tuck and the police station, to force players to go to the weapon shop, and also force players to use more than one route. i am also debating whether or not to use the boat. ive never made a vehicle in a map, so im just looking for excuses to : also the boat would serve basicaly no purpose. and btw thanks for the quick resonses to this post :nuts:

This is a Map i Have made a layout and am currently designing. it is called de_desolate it takes place in a city, where terrorists plan on bombing the drawbridge, the only way out of the city. the counter terrorists' job is to stop the terrorists from completing their objective. the terrorists have crashed their equiptment truck near the entance to the city at a road block. they are fully supplied with body armor, grenades, AK47s and MAC10s.

The Counter Terrorists are at the police station equipping themselves when the crash occurs, and are ready to spring into action. they are equipped with M4A1a, Steyr AUGs, TMPs, and an assortment of grenades. various highlights of the map are: the functioning drawbridge (which must be activated to cross) the gunshop where any item can be purchased, the bar (with a shotgun stashed under the cash register) a boat in the water, roof access to almost all roofs.

Suggestions and criticism are greatly appreciated. any feedback is useful feedback.
