TWHL is full of nerds, half of us fill our free time with web design and the other half spend all out time playing video games.

You did read some of the previous posts, right? Most of the people before you mentioned all the other stuff they're doing asides computing. Or did you just assume that the 50% non-nerd of the TWHL populace already posted and that the other posts following after yours, would be made by the nerd section?

I like martial arts as well but the fact that any decent martial arts (that I'd like to do) is at least 30 minutes away by bus (which ain't cheap) and costs a lot of money (something I don't have, as a student) I'm currently not able (read: willing) to do that. In the past I've done Judo, Kung-Fu and Karate. Though none of those I practiced for longer than 18 months. (Oddly enough, there's always been reasons for quitting.)

Since I go to college and work 5 days a week, that allows for little other stuff to do but to relax behind my PC or spend time with my girlfriend. Other hobbies that I have (asides level design, graphical art and surfing the net) are writing, drawing and TV. I wish I could add Jeet Kune Do to that list, but the nearest location for that is Amsterdam. (Meh!)

Bad. I hated Al Jazeera's analogy of the Van Gogh murder, what caused it and its impact on Dutch society, but they should still have the same freedom of speech as I have.

(And the Van Gogh murder here is just given as an example.)

Well, look on it from the bright side; at least giving rowleybob the custom title of 'forum nazi' will now actually be justified.

In the meantime: I hate all extremists. Kill all extremists! I suggest we start with rowleybob and everyone he's ever communicated with!

CP, that's the weakest of argumentations I've heard in years. Since we've had a similair discussion before, I won't repeat myself, as you already know how I feel about that. Well Okay, I'll repeat one point that I made last time;
Accept Jesus into your heart by simply praying to God and asking forgiveness for your sins.
Apparently I'm born with sins and need to turn to God according to some narrowminded rules to become 'better'. Hrm yes, that leaves me with the problem of not having commited any sins upon leaving the womb. Not even according to the 10 commandments did I commit any sins upon birth. Also, care to clarify those 'sins'? Do you even know what those dreadful sins are that apparently every human makes? Or are you just citing that book of yours or the sunday preaches?

Like said in the beginning of this post; your post was the most hollow and weak 'argumentation' I've seen in a long time. And this also is another argument; you're always very clever but when it comes to religion, you get blinded and start shouting random unargumented nonsense.

Lastly; since you reckon your variant of Christianity rules them all, care to clarify why its better than all other religions? Or just regular Christianity? Don't give me the weak talk of "Believe in Him and you'll see!!", give me some actual stuff I can work with. For all I care, describe what you're seeing, that makes your religion so perfect. I'd reaaaaaly like to know.

Fine, believe everything the media tells you.

You do realise that your posts in this thread could've been ripped off straight from the Fox News?

You're the one who, apparently, just believes what the media and authorities are telling. You're the one not defending your statements with arguments and / or facts and you're the one who obviously has not done much, if any, research into this matter. You're just blurting.

So, everybody arrested is guilty and may be inclosed for several years without an accusation whatsoever. Soooo, you wouldn't mind being arrested tomorrow as a terrorist and being very nicely detained in Guantanamo Bay? Of course, as long as they don't beat you, they're not torturing you!

Torturing can be done in many ways, beating or performing surgergy without anesthetic isn't the only way to go.

God = Allah = Jahweh
Yeah, on that I agree, but I know some people might be offended by that anology, hence why I didn't make it.
having sex in a public park
That's bull. As if only gay people practice that? Are you really that narrowminded? I've seen more hetrosexual people screwing eachother in public than gays. In fact, I've never seen gays shagging in public. And even if they would shag in public, then that says jack about their sexual preference. It only says anything about their manners. Which, just to make this clear, are totally independant of sexual preference.
According to the Bible...
And this is why I hate religious people who feel that their religion need to be dragged into everything. If a muslim would make the exact same statement as you did, but only starting his sentence with "According to the Koran...", would you agree with him or start argueing about which book is better?

On the subject of books; books have writers. Writers are subjective. Writers are extremely subjective if they believe in something and want to write about it. Where I'm going? The bible is, supposidly, written by the disciples of Jesus. I'm all cool and dandy with that concept, but then keep in mind that the bible is not an accurate tale of events and should be treated as the story told from one subjective point of view. This means that the bible should not be treated as the definitive word and will of God, simply because the story is being told in a subjective manner and there's no way to verify that what's written, is actually true. (Which makes religion even funnier, as this whole argument also counts for the Koran and other holy scripts. World religions are based on books which might as well be fake and are unverified, yet no-one seems to be bothered with that possibility.)

And even if the Bible was the definitive word and will of God, then the countless rewrites by the Church (and other religious organizations who've rewritten the scripts) have rendered the bible useless, as in those countless rewrites, lots of changes have been made and propaganda inserted. (These would then be called 'improvements'. Heh, jokers.)

Somebody here mentioned heaven and hell and how they were just added to scare people into not comitting 'sins'; he's totally right and it's a good example of added or changed material.

Whats wrong with condemning homosexuality?
I mean come on, look at how the different sex's bodys are formed, they were obviously not meant to have homo-relations.
Delve a bit into biology and you'll find out that that is far from true. To help you in your biology search, I've included a wiki link in this post. The wiki link in question will probably be very controversial for most people around here, so don't click unless you're sure of your sexuality. (Or click if you're unsure, but really don't care which way your sexuality goes.)

Among psychologists, it's also known that boys, generally before their adolesence, have homosexual tendancies which tend to dissipate with most boys, as they grow older. (And this is from a purely psychological point of view.)

Whether God / Allah / Jahweh / whomever intended it is, of course, a whole different story. This post is just from biological and psychological point of view.

Lastly, here's the wiki link in question. Like said, this isn't for people who are very conservative or unsure of their sexuality. (The latter tends to be a majority of the adolescent male populace.)

Wiki entry about the various pleasures concerning the rectum.

Those people want to blow me up for the mere fact that Im American...
Did you get ANY education on terrorists' their motives whatsoever? Sure, there might be terrorists who want to do that, but the majority don't. What they want to accomplish is not to kill civillians, that's their strategy. They want American withdrawal from the Middle East. If they'd spread their words through peaceful manners and their offered replacements would actually be good (instead of the Sharia), then they'd have my respect.

But yeah, if you want to believe that they want to kill you just because you're American, feel free. Freedom of speech and thought. Fantastic amendment, though currently being poorly executed by the US Government.
They have much more liberties than our very own scum...

when "Seperation of Church and State" only means the government cannot force you to be a certain religion, or make you believe something by force.
Unless the definition of "seperation of church and state" is given in the US constitution (which I don't know, as it isn't my constitution, so feel free to let me know if it is or is not given), seperation of church and state means just that;

Church (hence: religion) may not affect the state (or anything related to the state). So if there is no definition given, then this means that religious based political parties would be forbidden as would be any influence from religion on the functioning of the state.

Though I'm fairly sure a definition is given (it wouldn't be smart to not give a specific definition, for the simple fact that you can then interpret such text in multiple ways, which'll lead to trouble sooner or later), I just thought I'd add that little bit.. ;)

And, like said, if there is a specific definition given, please let me know.

We're actually friendly people
Its that whole Protestant influence.
By bashing another religion you just proved your friendlyness. The biggest religion in the lower and germainic countries is protestantism / Lutherism and we're quite friendly people too, thankyouverymuch! Personally, the only religion I believe in is my own and I still find people who don't share my 'religion' friendly people. I suppose I'm just odd like that, huh?

And the media; the media, no matter what they claim, are never objective and will always twist and turn the facts into their likings. A few governments here and there will also feel free to throw in a bit of cencorship of propaganda. (Most noticably China and the US. The US obviously to a lesser extend and more subtle than China.) The European media also proved their 'objectiveness' (HAH!) during the various referendums (if the member states even held those!) about the European constitution.

Two examples; The Dutch media was more of a massive 'vote-yes' propaganda machine and in Germany there even wasn't a referendum, the government simply decided for their people on such an important subject. Ain't democracy nice? True democracy; the people decide. Parlemantary democracies; you vote for your favorite chap and just pray that he does even a few things according to your liking and / or like he promised.

Kasperg; though you can do a whole lot in three hours, I generally need more time than just that to create a full-fledged environment. (Both brush- as entitywise.) So just labeling as lazy because he can't make a test chamber that quick would seem a bit out of place.. ;)

Of course, labeling him lazy because he's been on the couch watching movies, is totally valid.. :P

Definitely! The first shell hitting the village surprised me and gave me a bit of a jump. Since I know what it'll cause, since we've all played through Ravenholm, I felt pretty sorry for every shell hitting. This in return raised the Combine death toll.. But I'm pretty sure we can all agree that that isn't a bad thing.. ;)

When was the last time you witnessed a zombie transformation? I went through medical school, but I have never studied such subject. You can't use biological comparison, because the whole process is unnatural, by definition.

Only the people at Valve know the truth.
A bit of imagination is really welcome. I was planning on comparing this with snakes losing their skin (it seemed fitting enough.. :P) but since your medical school prohibits that, I'll just use my imagination and some logic.. ;)

It would make sense that any creatures taking control of your brains would have a hard time trying to master the use of it since it's never used them before. It'd be like trying to walk all over again! The mutations also need time. I'd say as long as mutations caused by other flesh-diseases would take. (Assuming there are flesh-related diseases that cause mutations. Would cancer be one of them?) Plus, like said, in one or two places in HL1, headcrabs can be seen simply sitting on scientists' heads, taking control of them. This also makes me believe the people at Valve (or at least Marc Laidlaw, the writer) did think it over for a bit longer. (Though generally everybody involved in creating new creates should've thought it over for a prolonged period of time. Since new creature-concepts are always thoroughly thought through. (Anybody with the Raising the Bar book should know this too.))
Or, that it is their "black mesa" in the east.
They could have many facilleties.
For example, the one you're in, in HL1, I bet that would be, "Black Mesa. South"
I mean, with the desert and all.
No, I would say that Black Mesa is more of a reference than anything else. The resistance uses anything Black Mesa related as ideology (such as the lambda signs for rebel stashes) thus it would make sense to label their main base as Black Mesa. The added East should simply indicate the geographical location. It should also be pointed out that the original Black Mesa was a government facility, owned by the United States. Since HL2 is located in Eastern-Europe, there could never be a government-owned Black Mesa secret research facility outside of US territory. (At least, you would assume that the US, and just about any government, would make sure that top-secret research is conducted on own ground, to prevent information and technology from falling in enemy's hands and to not be dependant of other countries' their generosity.)
Is it just possible that Lost Coast has no story...
Actually, I'm pretty sure that it was mentioned in a few interviews with Valve staff that it was Ravenholm that was being shelled. Plus, technically, there already is a story in the map. Y'know, as you have to destroy the gun at the monestary to stop the shelling.. ;) (But the latter is just nagging, of course.. ;))

Actually, it takes time. If you'll notice the post-disaster scene right after the incident at HL1, there are one of two places where headcrabs are just sitting on the heads of their victims doing, seemingly, nothing. So my assumption is that they either kill or knock out their opponents first and then latch onto their heads. The change in hands should also indicate that, as you don't grow such mutations straightawaye. (It's also obvious that Gordon's been unconcious for a while when he wakes up after the disaster, giving incubation enough time.) So headcrabs need some time to transform their victims, but only a few hours. I'm more thinking; the more severe the mutations (e.g.: fast or poisinious zombies), the longer the incubation period.

And Ravenholm can easily have water on either sides, there's nothing stopping that. (My assumption is that Black Mesa East is west* from where you start in Lost Coast (behind the mountains, towards the industrial area). Since we entered Ravenholm through a tunnel, we really don't know what the access roads look like.)

(* Some people might now think; but why would Black Mesa East be called East if it's west from Ravenholm? This is probably because the East in BME probably refers to the hideout's location in regard of City 17, not Ravenholm.)

About Ravenholm's size; it indeed looks a bit small, but from where we're standing in Lost Coast, it's probably a few miles away, making it in reality a lot larger. And Ravenholm also had a lot of wood houses on the outskirts (the parts we'd seen), the more concrete buildings weren't visible until you got to the center of Ravenholm. Because if you'll remember the first Ravenholm bits were in wood houses; the deeper you got, the more concrete you stumbled across.

I meant abandoned my non-infected humans.. ;) Hence why I said that there should be more survivors because one would assume that resistance fighters would be able to fend off a few headcrabs for a few hours. (Until Freeman would arrive.)

Plus, there's a few hour incubation period. Now it's feasable that most headcrabbed persons became zombies, but to evolve into fast and poison zombies in a few hours? Doubtful. That would need weeks. (You might be able to use the argument that fast headcrabs could make somebody a fast zombie relatively quickly, but that still wouldn't explain the poisinous zombies, as poisinous headcrabs can't kill you.) Also; the larger the mutation, the longer the incubation and transformation time. You can't expect someone to lose his skin (like a fast zombie) in just a few hours or to grow so much extra meat (like a poisinous zombie) in just a few hours.

Lastly, also at Black Mesa East when Alyx tours you around and you run for the door that leads to Ravenholm (but is then still closed), she'll follow you and notice how they "used to live there". This indicates that more time has passed than just a few hours. (It's also not clear if Black Mesa East was founded before or after the Ravenholm incident. All we know it might've been created as a response to the loss of Ravenholm.)

Yes, because when you break the gun, headcrabs escape. Makes sense.
I don't know at what speed you ran through the level, but the village gets shelled as soon as you enter the cliffside.. :P The time in between you running up the cliff and actually diabling the machine, more than enough headcrab-shells are fired away to infest a small town like Ravenholm with headcrabs.

What doesn't make sense, plotwise, is how fast Ravenholm would've been abandoned once you get there. If this were a part of HL2 itself, then storywise this never would've been possible as Gordon would (seeing the sunset at Lost Coast and the night at Ravenholm) only be a max of 36 hours difference. In this time, seeing as the town was a rebel stronghold, more then enough armed resistance fighters should still be alive in Ravenholm. (More than just one priest, looking after his herd.)

Therefor, plotwise we'll have to assume that Lost Coast is a prologue to Half-Life 2 and that Gordon is briefly gotten out of stasis by the G-Man in an attempt to keep the resistance stronghold alive. (Which eventually fails. This would actually feed the Half-Life 2 plot, as at one point in HL2, the G-Man can be seen talking to Cubbage. It's understandable that the G-Man would be intend on helping the resistance out if he failed to do so the first time.)

Just my 2 cents, of course.. ;)

I did have one visual anomaly. I've had a brush that was spread out infiitely. Saving and loading again fixed this. It's a very rare that I've had with multiple games. Probably caused by either a stressed videocard or a miscalculation by my GPU. (Or VPU, whatever ATi calls 'em.)

Overall; though I've heard about this bug before, I haven't experienced it even though, by today's gaming standards, I've got a pretty weak computer. (But I still wub it anyway! hugs 'puter) I believe having a clean and proper set-up should prevent a lot of bugs for a lot of games. So, in my view, it's not that the people who encounter that bug might've crappy computers, but I do think having a clean and proper set-up computer will help in reducing the amount of bugs. Whether their computers are clean and properly set-up, is to be explained by the people who are experiencing the bug.

Cutting out for me really isn't an option. In my case, I would have to cut out the voice acting (with which I'm having problems) and the disaster really wouldn't make any sense without the explanation given. And even if I would consider doing that, then there would still be the problem of actually using that for Starlabs. That would mean I would have to redo vast portions (as the whole event would be timed with multimanagers and such) just to adjust the timing. (I may know the length of the voice acting, but you can't say if the events happen to quickly or to slow in correspondence with the voice acting if you can't hear it.)

So just entering what I have isn't an option.

Just to clarify;

If you have an AMD CPU then don't look at it's actual CPU speed but look at its notation. (E.g.: 3200.) This notation says that your AMD operates as efficient as a Intel 3.2GHz CPU, only at a lower clockspeed. Effectively this means that if you have an AMD 2400, you meet the system specs, even if the Steam thingy says otherwise. (Since that one's programmed to look at clock speed and clock speed alone. It doesn't for efficiency.)

As for me: I have the following:
1GB RAM (333MHz DDR, for ye wizzes)
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (256 bit memory, for ye wizzes)
Intel Pentium 4, 1.5 GHz.

Seeing my slow CPU and the ridiculiously high system specs, it ran pretty well on my system. On the heavy bits I had a fps in between 3 and 20 and at all the other bits it varied in between 30 and 45. I even had a spike of 70, but that was when facing a wall in a hallway.. ;) All my specs are on high, excluding AA and AF and shadows.

(Yes, high.. I also played through HL2 with those specs. Ran pretty sweet.. :P)

I normally run on 1024x768, but a broken down monitor forced me to play this on 800x600. Therefor, one may assume I had a slight performance boost due to the lower resolution.

Sad news, for me anyway, is that I won't be able to enter this compo afterall. I've had a few technical setbacks as well as time on my back. With midterms coming up, I won't be having the time to implement all the entities (assuming for a second I manage to solve those technical problems) so there shall be no entry from my side. (Which I find to be a great pity.)

Regardless; good luck to those who are still in the race; may the best man win!

And here's my real desktop!

Some notes:

? There's a blue HTML book on the left bottom of the picture. Just to clarify: I, in no way, need such a book. It's the book of my girlfriend and, if you look carefully, you'll see that there are a few A4 sized papers in the middle of the book. Those A4 papers contain some webdesign assignments that she asked me to do. I actually learned HTML myself. (That and a wee bit from w3schools.. Now begone! ;))

? The black-red camera case and the grey USB wire normally don't filthen my desk any further. But then again, it doesn't really matter that much, since my desk is enough of a mess as-is.

? Look below the desk and you'll find out that my slippers have a black soles. It matches the yellow walls, right? No? Meh.

? Yellow paint. Chose it myself; it gives my room a warm feel so I can fantasize about being on a tropical island. Of course during summer, my room actually turns into one, heatwise. Then you have me wishing to be near the artic circle...

? The wires are always like that.

? I'm a poor soul, so no fancy thingmajigs on my desk, sorry. Most things you see there have been given to me by various kind people. The exception to the rule being the keyboard, mouse and most expensive components in my computer. (I upgraded before Half-Life 2. To finance, I took a summer job..) Anyone willing to fetch me fancy expensive stuff is welcome.. ;)

Edit: Last bullet point is sarcastic, obviously. Please don't offer me your equipment.. I'm still paying back some Italian 'friends' from downtown for their 'services'..

It makes me feel so poor.. I've got a simple wooden board with a huge monitor (huge as in: how can it possible need so much space for such a relatively small monitor?), computer, boxes, cables everywhere and loads of paper on it. Even dusting it off can be hell! (I have to remove all the equipment. With my 'ordening' of the cables, that can be quite annoying.)

Pepper, you especially should know I'm entering with the Starlabs Test Chamber! :o (Well, that is if school won't get in between.. ;)) I mentioned it on CPCP's forums!

And I'll mail you the sound files as soon as possible! Thanks in advance! :)

Okay, that explains a lot! When I first read this thread, I was more under the impression that you wanted to insert a prop model in HL1 (such as, let us say, a car). Inserting the actual models is very easy, making use of an ambient generic. (Or in the case of not living props: monster_furniture.) The problem is though, that this doesn't copy the AI the monsters have. For this, you'll have to copy the Azure Sheep dll files into your mod and, equally as important, put these monsters in your map using the Azure Sheep fgd file!

I don't know if Azure Sheep came with such files so you'll have to look for those yourself. My guess is that the fgd file wasn't made publically available and thus if you want to include the Azure Sheep models and their AI, you'll need to ask those files from the Azure Sheep team. (That, and of course their permission to use their material, as its copyrighted.)

Another problem is that, even if you get the Azure Sheep code, then you also want to include the Genome monster. This is conflicting as you can only use one dll file. What you'll have to do is, somehow, obtain the source code for both mods and then implement that into one dll file and one fgd file. So yeah, there'll be quite a bit of coding involved.

And implementing the models should just work if they're in the riht directory. Just make sure that when your map is in your modfolder (for instance: sierra/half-life/silentdeath/maps/) and in the map you've got the model from this path: sierra/half-life/valve/models/ then it won't work. This is because it'll then look for a folder called sierra in your silentdeath directory. The solution is to place the models from the valve models folder into your silentdeath model folder and refer to the model as models/modelname.mdl in your map. Of course, they'll still stand still, going through idle animations, as they still have no AI.

There are 10 wav files, each requiring the 4 steps. (The majority of them also require step 2,5.)

Just to clarify a few things:

1) Models in a mod directory (e.g.: sierra/half-life/cstrike/models/) get a priority above pak files. If the game can't find the needed model in the model directory, then it'll look for it in the pak file. (Obviously, if you're working with a mod folder structure, then it'll first look at that mod its model directory, then at the mod its pak file (if it has one) and then at the Half-Life model folder and pak file.)

2) To insert custom models, you do not need a mod directory! A HLDM map can easily have models inserted. Just make sure the model is placed in the appropriate map. (For HLDM that would simply be: sierra/half-life/valve/models/)

And to help answer your question: can you specify exactly what you're trying to do here? Thus, what's the name of the model, how are you trying to implement it (monster_generic, monster_furniture, etc.), where the map is situated (in a mod folder, or where?) and how you're trying to open your map. (Just with vanilla Half-Life or through your mod?)

Lastly it's important to know if you're running Steam and if yes, if you've configured VHE for that appropriately.

Oh bugger that voice acting. It's good quality, but without a sound artist I'm not getting anywhere. Would there happen to be any experienced people on TWHL with experience in sound editing? It all goes well for me until I perform hiss reduction. Gets rid of the hiss, but also creates artifacts and transforms the sound. (Depending on the FFT size.)

Edit: Here's the precise step-plan of what I'm doing:

Step 1: Increasing / decreasing the volume (depending on the situation).
Step 2: Resample to 22050Hz.
Step 2,5: Only applies in certain cases; I mess around with the bandpass to get an effect as if the voice acting is spoken through an intercom.
Step 3: Save as 8 bit mono , unsigned.
Step 4: Hiss reduction (I copy a part where no text is spoken and there's just hiss, and base the hiss reduction on that).

Very much so true! Even if some of the contestants totally r0x0r b0x0r, there's still the issue of time.

Currently, I don't have an awful lot and still have a few audio problems to tackle. So I'd say people who don't have my similar problems, have a wee bit of an advantage over me.. ;)

Heh, I haven't been on the Verc for a long time! (The forums, at least.) After having answered the same question for one or two years, I got tired of it and found other intarweb residences.. ;)

I specially joined the TWHL for this compo as it seemed fun and, like said, a good excuse to get some work done.. :) I've also seen some of the other compo's here (and especially TMA and CP their entrances) but never had the time to join. And now I finally have a good excuse, yay!

In the meanwhile, I hope I'll spend a bit of time around here each week, helping out here and there. (On the forums.) But with school being as it currently is, I cannot make any promises.

Anywhoo; everybody, happy hunting! (Do note that hunting may be replaced with mapping, at your leisure..)
