What isn't readily explained in that tutorial (It took me a long time to make a ladder from that tutorial) is that when you place the func_useableladder, you need to grab the little white circle/dot and drag the SECOND box (that is perfectly on top of the FIRST box in all three views) to the top of the climb. It's a two-part single entity.

Also, ladders work poorly in Deathmatch. It's like you've developed a severe hiccup as you climb.

Use my ladder example which only works for CSS and not HL2 ok.

I was having trouble with that tutorial as well. I was informed there is an easier way. Make a brush with the nodraw texture. (i use one thats about a unit thick and place it in front of my ladder prop) Then apply the tools/ladder texture to the side of it you intend to be the climbing surface. It's a red looking texture that says "ladder" on it. Select the brush and press CTRL+T to tie to entitiy. select "func_ladder" from the dropdown list. this should work, and is how i am currently making ladders. Credit to RabidMonkey for informing me of this solution.
