I'll compile my thoughts and post later ;)

hehe, thats the thing.

After it logged me out, I clicked back, forgetting to log back in, and because of the new "No anonymous posting", the reply box was not even present.

woopsy...

Anyway, all I commented on was something Unbreakable said...

Yes it took that long to reply ;)

Losing a long post has happened to everyone before, that's why I compose my reply in notepad and copy and paste the text into the box whenever I write something long.

After losing it all, you sort of lose interest in writing your thoughts over again. It's highly painful.

If you used Opera, I know for sure it woulda saved it, and probably Firefox too ;).

Anyway, look forward to it.

This is not directed at anyone in particular, just from experience: if anyone starts flaming, this thread will be closed. You have been warned.

You should make it a habit to always copy long texts when you are posting. Allthough it isn't as bad as it was before, the server logs you out sometimes. :

Erm, no it doesn't. It depends on how pissed the evil three-headed server administrator is.

I thought I was the only one! I'm not mad! Although I've had notepad 'causing an illegal operation' before, which is quite humourous, so my posts aren't even safe there!

An extension that backs up form text would be a valuable addition to firefox methinks.

Yesterday I was watching a bit of 'this morning' on it, that royal 'expert' guys charles whittaker or whatever his name is said that the royals had announced that IF the popes funeral was on Friday then they would, as a mark of respect, postpone the royal wedding. It just so happened that the cardinals announced that it would be, but had came to the decision in the morning time. The "IF" was just them saving face, since all cameras would be in vatican city, and all dignitaries would be there too. I thought it funny anyways.

I'd expect a guhly man like you to say that Jahz. My current beef with the Pope-based shenanigans is that nothing else seems to matter elsewhere in the world. Again with my Princess Diana comparison; Mother Theresa passed away in the background without so much as a nod from the media, whereas everyone was telling you us on TV that Diana should be made a Saint! You can only be remembered it seems on an otherwise slow news day. If the media were reporting like proper journalists we would actually be hearing what else is going on in the world, rather than as a simply news round up between Pope-Watch 24 bulletins. People are capable of caring about lots of things, the media isn't it seems.

Historic moments like this is the best time for us to take a look at the way information enters our homes and lives through the media. That they are incapable of reporting all the news instead of focusing on this one dead issue (no pun intended) merely shows us that they don't care about anything they report, just ratings and whatever sells newspapers.

I'm not a Christian, and I don't know much about the pope. I was still slightly saddened to hear of his death, but no more than when I hear of people being blown up in Iraq or wherever else. He did some good things, no doubt. He was the first pope to appoint black archbishops, for example. But some of his ideas were just plain stupid, and someone in a position of power should be expected to research issues properly instead of being judgemental. To quote the director of Christian Aid:

"We were disappointed that he did not realise the Roman Catholic policy on condoms actually contributed to many deaths in the fight to control HIV/AIDS." Daleep Mukarji, 4th April

And Jahzel, why are you against one form of prejudice ("Arnold is a racist scumbag") but not another ("Arnold is a homosexual"). Perhaps it was just a flippant comment, but even so it doesn't help.

We can hear this things in the news everywhere these days. People are saying that...
...
the Roman Catholic policy on condoms actually contributed to many deaths in the fight to control HIV/AIDS
Which in my opinion is just wrong. If the Roman Catholic church says people shouldnt use condoms, it's up to the people to use them or not. There isnt an inquisition force making sure people dont do so, people are more or less free in that respect. The Roman Catholic says that the best way to prevent the spreading of HIV/AIDS is abstinence, not condoms. We may or may not agree with that way of life, but hell, they are right!!!

For example:
The best way not to die jumping from a plane is not using a parachute, but not jumping at all. It's so simple
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-07 16:47:28 UTC Post #102351
I know full well the church didn't force people to abandon condoms, but they still spread misinformation which people have believed and contracted HIV as a result. The people who this affects the most do not have access to such a range of knowledge as ourselves. If you were in an African village and the only information available to about contraception was from the Roman Catholic church, and you suffered as a consequence, how would you feel? And as for your parachuting analogy, if we all practised abstinence in order to defeat HIV the human race would soon be extinct. Simple, huh?
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-07 17:15:34 UTC Post #102353
in case you dont know (and so it seems) the abstinence is refered to intercourse with different partners, not in a marriage or equivalent social union. Human race would not be extinct.
I wonder what kind of desinformation we are talking about...
Roman catholic church tells the people in the village that using condoms will not guarantee a 100% protection from AIDS, but abstinence most likely will.
So they decide to mantain intercourse and not use condoms... Is that really doing what the Church says? I dont think so

Main Entry: ab?sti?nence

Nothing to do with different partners.

come on guys... Doctors are saving peoples lives and footballer get paid millions more for kicking a damn ball around a footbal pitch. JEES!
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-07 17:59:52 UTC Post #102375
Seems abstinence was not the word they used... The exact word or definition has nothing to do with it, the idea is fairly simple to understand. They say that if you stick with your partner, chances of getting AIDS wil be reduced.
Now this, while being true, can lead to mistakes as you guys mentioned, since usually many african women cant control who their partner is with, if they dont use condoms they end un being victims of AIDS.
So everyone is wrong.
Condoms would greatly reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS
Refraining from sporadic intercourse would also reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS

So the Roman Catholic Church is wrong by not supporting this method.
At the same time, people are wrong when saying that practising this sort of abstinence (kasperg covers his head because of a large evil dictionary patrolling high above) is causing deaths. Intercourse with infected people causes infection and death, not lack of intercourse.
