Ive been making this little map pak project/mini mod thing of mine for a long while now. Ive got so many good ideas (well good ideas for me) for my story and maps and stuff, but im progessing quite slowly and map making takes along time. The annoying thing is that im doing a really boring part of my map at the moment and its quite large, so im getting tired of it, and i keep having all sorts of ideas for whats gonna happen later, luckily i write most of it down, but i was wondering how other mappers get motivation to carry on?

My only motivation is that i keep getting all these ideas that i think are pretty nifty and i think people might like my game/map pak so i want to finish it. But i dont think i'll finish it before HL2 comes out which means that when i do finally release it, no one will play it!

Just wondering what other mappers do to keep mapping?
And how long does it take to finish a map until your satisfied with it?
Whats the average age of these mappers?

Sorry, I know this totally off topic but im very curious, Cheers :D

You have to have a team. To keep going, you need others to help, so you know if you fail, they will kill you.

but really, you need a team.

No. You just need motivation and lot of time. Okay, having a team might help a bit  .

I dont think having a team helps a bit.
Listen to good music, read something inbetween, play some comp-game.
Ask MarlBoroMetal, i think he posted like 20 lines about what to do to keep you going, plus, he's a teacher :)

If I get bored of a particular map (well, when I used to map before Steam), I set it aside and create some fun random little multiplayer map to force upon players on my tfc server. I then returned to the other map, tended to give me fresh new ideas too!

I'm sry, I'm probably being ignorant, but, whats steam? Everone always talks about steam. And what does :/ mean, I see it everywhere, even in the http[:/]/ thing.

[Hyper text transmiting protocall]

is that what it means?

Steam is Valve's new way of getting games into your hands ASAP. Games like Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and Counter-Strike Condition Zero are all being made available through Steam.

Steam games are automatically kept up-to-date with the latest content and revisions. Steam also includes an instant-message client which even works while you're in-game.
:/ is the same as :

:// is the end of (some?) protocol types, such as http:// and ftp://

I always have at least two maps working at any given time, usually different mods. When I run into a problem spot on one I switch to the other. Usually they are for different mods (DM and SP or Sven Co-op), so it changes the way I think about mapping. If that doesn't help I make a mini map to test tricks... build a teleporter that switches destinations, see how many snarks it takes to fill a 128 unit cube, make a "punish-the-scientist" map... something to take your mind off of the trouble map. If I'm still stuck I quit mapping and watch a movie. Unfortunately that can give you even more ideas... I just watched "The Time Machine" and now I want to build the river world in the future. Too many curves and open areas for HL, maybe I'll try it when HL2 is released.

Music makes a big difference too... keep your mind moving. Make sure to mix it up; even if you really like techno slip in a few classical songs, maybe some light jazz. Electronic beats stimulate my brain, but switching from "Dj Dymension" to "English Chamber Orchestra" to "Led Zepplin" keeps things moving in my mind.

It doesn't matter how long it takes to "finish" a map. Do not publish it until you are happy with it. I've been mapping for a couple of years and just published my first map... I simply wasn't satisfied with any of the others. If someone bangs out a map in two hours they didn't put any love into it, any soul, and that's what mapping is all about. I can literally create a world and alter almost any aspect of that world, why settle for a so-so world?

At least that's my two cents,

We have already covered that in another forum, and yes, I recognized it because I was scared of that book when I was little. It freaked me out!

"Where the Wild Things Are" is still my favorite book. The pic is from the last page, when he comes home for supper,
"...and it was still hot."

uhh, back on topic, you can read "Where the wild things are" to get focused on your maps.

I'll try that ;)

That book is pretty freaky for a kids book.

But hey, im back home from a short break with my girl friend and im ready to get mapping.

But this is going to take so long!

Well i guess i'll be back here soon with another problem ive come across... Until then, thanks
