I have to make a decision with which harddrive I'm getting for my new custom built comp. I just need to know how much space HL2 and 5-6 mods will take up. And for any of you that do any modding, more extensive mapping or character modelling, how much disk space will that take up? Any input would be great. Also thinking of putting UT2004 on there, not sure how much room that takes up.

Hmm, 2004 takes up 4gb I think, half-life2 takes up 4.5gb aswell, so that is 8.5 for both of them, and with additional mods and tools, I'd say about 10gb in total, depending on mod size and amount of tools.

Just nab a 120gb HD. They're not too expensive, and you can hold all the mods, games, and tools you need. For a while, at least. Then you can pop another one in there ;D

You can't have enough hard drive space, especially at today's prices. Buy the most you can afford, and make it SATA if your motherboard supports it.

Conidering how cheap harddrives are nowadays, you should go for a 200-250GB HD.. The price difference is so small that you'd be a fool not to.

Just make sure it's 7200 rpm or better. And I agree with Seventh-Monkey, get a S-ATA.

(If you can afford it, go for 400GB! :D)

As the guys said; if your MB can handle a SATA, get one. If not...well...it's not the end of the world

Just make sure it's Seagate or Maxtor, both have great quality and are quiet, especially Seagate.

Well, I think if I get 74GB 10000rpm harddrive for now, then get another one and set it up in raid 0 or something, I'll be good, but expensive. Just wondering whether I could get away with 36GB for now and get another 36 later.

DO NOT get a Maxtor. I have had several die on me. Western Digital and Seagate are your best bet. If you have SATA, go for a WD Raptor. They are very small (74GB is the biggest availible) but are the fastest non-SCSI drive out there now.

I had a Maxtor, I didn't have any problems with it. Now I've got a 120bg hard disk.

20gb should be fine if you can't afford 120gb. I had loads of Games on my Maxtor and I still had plenty of space, with huge games with loads of mods. 20gb should be fine

I have owned 3 DiamondMax 9's and 2 10's. All but one have died of the same problem, dodgy motor.

20gb is fine but 120's are pretty cheap these days (what, $100?) the extra space is worth it. (More music, woot ;P)

I've got 80gb Maxtor 7200prm and 200gb Maxtor DiamondMax9 7200rpm, No problems.

Seagate HDD is the best quality. I've heard great things about them.

when i installed HL2 on this PC at Xmas, it didnt work at all so i had to upgrade it all..

i got 2 120gb HDDs a 1.8Ghz P4 processor and 1024mb RAM

So HL2 worked... but it was still jumpy and i couldnt run it on anywhere near full graphics..

No, I don't use SCSI.

BTW, 15k is NOTHING. I've worked on servers with 25k RPM disks at work.

Yeah, I work at a local datacentre. I am pretty much in charge of compiling software and kernel development for the FreeBSD cluster at my work. We have several 25k SCSI disks in RAID0+1. I however don't do anything security related or administration, only performance related tasks such as improving kernel latency and software optimizations.

PCI ports are mainly used for Netcards, modems, soundcards, TV-cards and some crappy Graphic cards. I don't think there is a MB WITHOUT PCI slots, therefore I don't know what you're complaining about. Obviously you bought a wrong Graphic card for your PC.

Btw, for those who says that Dell suck, have you ever tried one? I own one and I have'nt had any problems with it. Of course I've had for 3 years now so it's a bit "out of date", but it still does its job very well. A Dell is like any other computer, a bunch of different labels put into one box. If you're refering to that Dell computers are not upgradeable, I can tell you that is horse crap. I hope I killed some rumors there

25k RPM! all that power, wasted at your job, the discracement! the insolence! the non-gamin useage of such power!

Its the same thing with all the good supercomputers, like the ones MIT and the millitary have. they have all that power and all they can find uses for them for are crunching numbers for weather simulations and other semi-usefull stuff. Why can no one find a reason to modify them to be able to play Half-life? or farcry. (prefferably with coding changes to enabe 32x anti-aliasing and antrophmorphic filtering). Why! Why! Why! I want to play HL? at norad on that huge screen so much!

I must remake my resolve to build the worlds best gaming rig. I just need to wait for the next time theres a seminar near me on distributed proccesing. with my level of access to used computers I can build a T3 interconected supercomputer in my basement that will replace SkyNet as the worlds dominating force, and it will entertain itself by selfprograming the worlds most advanced graphics engine. Bwahahahaha

you really don't need 25kRPM's , you really don't need even 10k. there good and all and I going to use one on my next computer(prefferably a small(34ishGig) 15000Rpm SCSi one along with a 7200RPM 400Gb if anyone knows how to set that up to work right, so ill be able to put all the highend game files on the SCSI and everything else that doesn't require a high access speed on the 400Gig)

Noone will own my supercomputer(s)! Muuhahahahaha! I'm putting my Pentium M under the cascade ASAP. The current Pentium M core (Sonoma Dothan) holds the x86 WR for SuperPi 1M, 19secs! The funny thing is, it's based on the Pentium III's Tualatin core. Anyway yeah, prepare to be severly owned in the processing department.

It talked about the future of 10Ghz Processors and the obvious cool and power wasting problems... It was incredibably interesting.
