using hammer, i've made a simple map and compiled it eventually OK. However, when it loads HL2, it says:

CModelLoader:: Map_IsValid: 'tester' is not a valid BSP file map load failed: tester not found or invalid.

How can I play my maps???

Ok so you made a map right?
The map must contain a light, env_cubemap, info_player_start and of course no leaks.

Now when you have all this in it you click compile and tick the boxes that say run VIS and RAD. Then click ok to compile...

If all goes well then the .bsp should have been created and placed in the HL2 maps folder.

Open HL2 and press ` to open up console, type map name and if it loads then good, then type buildcubemaps in the console to tell the game to render light and reflective surfaces.
Your map is complete and ready to be shipped around the world :P

Anyway if it works tell us and if not explain what you did.

If you can't hve leaks in HL2 maps, how come when using GArrys mod in a SP level in halflife, I noclipped to somewhere where you can't go in the game, and instead of a wall there was a leak! How come it still works? Sorry it was halflife 2 DeathMatch. IN GArrys mod. :D

those look strangely like the compile tools for HL1. its either that they are or that you don't have it using the full folder names.
