Hi, everyone!
I just came back from the cinema, where I watched "War of the worlds". And daaaaam that movie is like a already edited and specially designed scenario for a HL2 mod!
The storyline is like this:
You are one guy who works as a crane operator in a port (note that you could easily make a crane in hl2!), and suddenly strange things started to happen all over the earth. Big thunderstorms were rushing thru all the world and destroying every mechanical, electronical device possible (realisic thunderstorms - very possible with good entitywork and source's engine). Then after the destruction on the communications aliens with giant robots started coming out of the ground (note that those aliens were very strider-like and shot the same beams as striders!). Also the alien-creatures look similar to the vortigaunts! So your job is to form a resistance and destroy those aliens...
I think this mod would be pretty easy to make with some good mappers, modelers, skinners and perhaps with a lil' help from coding. I think that those, who have seen the movie would agree with me.
I can't map for HL2, but hey - what do you source mappers think of this idea? :)

easy?

I do not suggest to start mapping until that you are sure of that there is no Wars Of the Worlds game thats in work in progress.

Did I explain it correctly? :P

Nah I dont like it sorry but I dont think it would work that well, Film based storylines never work all that well. It would be much better if you came up with something with knowledge of the source engine would work well.

Sorry daubster but i think you should make up your own story, or edit the 'war of the worlds' one ;)

Saw the film, I don't think making SCREAMING BRATS into a map would be fun :P

Not all ideas are bad, why i'm stealing an idea from DMC3 where there will be a map with the credits on the side but you play a mini game fighting combine...

I saw it on Saturday. The first part was nice but the last half of the film was horrible.
Spielberg even had to copy the Velociraptor Kitchen Scene from his "Jurassic Park" film. Very dissapointing :(

Yea, but the thing that really freaked me out, was the similarity of those three legged things and the striders and the similarity of the aliens and the vortigaunts... :o

I didnt notice the vort's but the striders that popped out of the ground, made me wonder where they got their ideas from :)

Uh, from the H.G. Wells book written about a hundred years ago... that excellent gentleman did partially create the genre of science fiction.

you have a big problem... the vortigaunts won't shoot you in HL2...

That movie was the worst for Spielberg for me, sad to say. The dialogues were a little off and the characters didn't really do a good act, but the special effects were superb! It seemed that the last minutes were hastily done. The story ofcourse, is not his but the ending could have been better if Spielberg put more effort on delivering the explanation why it all ended, not just simply narrated.

I really do like the concept about the alien mechanisms being under the ground without our knowledge for thousands of years. :o

strange, there is already a movie called War of the worlds. There is some alien things which hid behind the moon and then attacked. If I had a picture I would show ya :

In 1898, Herbert George Wells wrote what is arguably the most important novel in the history of science fiction. The War Of The Worlds established a benchmark for a whole subset of the genre, that of an alien invasion of the Earth. But just as the Martians have come here, so we too have engaged in flights of fantasy there, and could even Wells have imagined the wonders that our robotic ambassadors are now uncovering?
1898.

The first War of the Worlds movie was released in 1953, directed by George Pal.

The same concept was used in Dragon Ball Z, when they found out that the bad guy had been hidden in a buried spaceship long before humans learned to walk on 2 legs :)
