I'd be looking at PCI-E. 6600GT is a good choice, but it's not there...

voodoo 2.

in other news, yeah, the 6600GT works well with everything out there today. although you could splash out and get something like a 6800 ultra.

X800XT PE, although I would wait for ATi Crossfire boards to be released, dual X900 action!

Anyone heard of those 512mb vid cards/are they any good?
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-15 01:15:00 UTC Post #120929
screw all of those things, get 2 Geforce 7800 GTX 250mb PCI-E cards in SLI. I guaruntee you wont be having framerate issues in anygame. EVER!

Pff, ATi make superior cards. nVidia are the Intel of the graphics world. Their chips have an unneccesary amount of transistors, put out lots of heat, and have monsterous power requirements.
m0p m0pIllogical.

ZeG, why did you list every card you could find in the mid-, high- and super-high categories? Get two X900s when they're out, if price is no thingy.

I use 9800Pro though, and i'm very satisfied

i would say the ati radeon 9800 over my nvidia geforce fx5200 anyday.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-15 10:15:56 UTC Post #120988
ATI X800 XT, probably the best one on your list.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-15 12:24:52 UTC Post #121000
pffft, ever ATI card I have ever used, installed or played on has crashed or blown up in some way, I installed one on a pc and ended up having to reinstall the whole damn thing. Put service pack 2 on a winxp machine, wouldnt even turn on till I took the ATI card out. Nvidia is much better, my POV and the 7800 kicks ass compared to any ATI thing, till the X900, we'll have to see what that does for graphics cards.

Which brings me to my next point. Whats in store, pretty soon we wont just have to worry about graphics cards but physics cards! Anyone else read about those things yet?

6800GT. It's pretty cheap nowadays :o

I need a 3ghz in a bad way, a 2 just doesnt do it anymore, my card is a 6600GT AGP not PCI-E. And it works good, if only I could get a 3 ghz :

Snpbond, it's not the card, it's more likely the OS, or even more likely the drivers. ATi are known for shitty drivers, but they have superior hardware in every way. Look how little transistors the X800 has, yet it kicks the crap out of the 6800 GT/Ultra. If ATi made decent drivers, they might do alot better, especially if they made decent GNU/Linux X drivers, their current ones suck for performance, although, I have no complaints about their stability. FSAA and FSAF functions work perfectly, they are just very slow.

Ati makes good drivers dumbass :D
They made shitty drivers before Catalyst

Ati makes good drivers dumbass
No they dont ;o Catalysts = crap ;p

Catalyst drivers are bad. Alot of professional 3DMark benchers still use 3.2 for performance reasons.

You mean benchmark-bias reasons?

Catalyst drivers are bad.
you complain about everything except linux :sarcastic:
I like Catalyst, the 5.7 drivers gave me a boost in fps..so.. :thefinger:

Seventh: No, the old catalysts perform much better.
Saribous: No, ATi's linux drivers are even worse than it's Windows drivers!

may be the drivers, but you can have the hardware, without drivers its useless :furious:
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-17 12:30:43 UTC Post #121578
ATI makes better cards for the price. I would go for the X800XT PE or X850XT PE. Or if you want the best just take m0ps advice and wait for the X900 and CrossFire. I overclocked the Radeon 9000 in my laptop by +63MHz (core) and +52MHz (memory) and it still runs cooler than my CPU even with no additional cooling. If I had overclocked an equivalent Nvidia card in my laptop it probably would have burned out long ago. (remember, laptops have horrible cooling)

And yes ATIs drivers arent that great but the Omega Drivers make a great alternative to ATIs drivers and can give you much better performance and stability.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-17 12:54:04 UTC Post #121586
I highly recommend the Omega drivers myself. They now come with a self-overclocking tool to basically overclock itself to safe limits without you having to do anything. Excellent drivers even if you don't want to overclock.

Anyone heard of those 512mb vid cards/are they any good?
512 is no better than 256mb unless you are doing 3D editing.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-17 17:16:04 UTC Post #121676
Possibly not even then. Even 256MB cards are pretty much pointless at the moment. Everybody says so :).

Ya i have a 256MB 9600XT and it probably does no better than a 128MB card. But it wasnt my money so I dont really care
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-17 17:19:29 UTC Post #121679
Now m0p is going to disagree, for no particular reason.. just wait!
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-17 17:50:37 UTC Post #121689
256MB is an improvement, but if your card sucks, then it doesn't really matter, since you'll be lagging in games anyway. 512MB cards are only utilized in extremely detailed enviroments, which make heavy use of high-res textures and shaders.
