In my first map I tested stuff that I learnd by myself!!! 
Like stairs,the light entity,water,breakeables,monsters,weaponry and creating corridors! It only had one texture and I used carving!

I did like 50% of it but now I stopped cause of the compo!

not unless he splits his map up into many maps. And take a look at the college project thread. That map is both huge and highly detailed and it hasnt started to lag yet (although its almost certain it will do so in multiplayer)

I didn't map my house... That would be a nightmare... But I made a de_rats style map of my bedroom... I think it is here somewhere actually probably on a different account.. Ahh HA!

It was the best map I ever made... That version has alot of bugs and stuff in it that I never got to fix or improve because the file became corrupt and my only copy of the rmf got destroyed. Its almost an exact model of my room though, I <3 it. Its preety much all custom textures if I remember correctly, preety much to scale. I used to have like 1,000,000 secrets... I don't know if they are still there but try going on the side of the desk closest to the window and just knife around it a bit, there might be a secret that leads into the computer =D - also I made a vent system complex so if you break the vent on top of the closet...
Heh sorry for such a long post, I am so damn proud of this crappy map hehe. I planned to make it again for source with a huge ammount of traps, vehicles, and other things only source can do, I just never got around to it I guess.
Anyway if you want to check it out it might at least have some inspiration!
