I had the idea the other day. as many of us know/ have heard, water cooling is good, and is the best form of cooling (unless you consider using liquid Nitrogen feaseable). well, if you could submerge your entire motherboard in water, it would be cooled very well, although it would short out almost instantaniously. which is why I thought of submerging a computer in UltraPure water. UltraPure water is water that has had everything but H2O filtered out, and hence is no longer conductive. But will still conduct heat.

if you built a minature cleenroom that was vacume sealed and had a way to allow wires from your CD, DVD, and floppy drive(s) into it, and preferably had the pipes from a normal water cooling kit leading in and out of it, you could have a very overclockable computer. you would just have to keep contaminates out of the water.

(this was just an idea i decided to share with you guys, incase anyone wanted to try it)

Watercooling is extremely far from the best. If you want 24/7 use, refrigeration is the way to go. If you can bear only being able to run for a few hours at a time, and running caseless (the majority of you gyus are newbs, so I will say "OMG TEH HOROR"), LN2 and Dry Ice are easily possible. You need a copper container (not just any container, must be designed PROPERLY), and LN2, or if you can't get that, Ethanol and Dry Ice. Cut up the DICE into small chunks (or you could just buy pellets), fill it about half way with ethanol, then put in the DICE. It should evaporate into the alchohol, causing it to lwer temps to -70C or so. I've tried twice, it's really fun! But don't breath in the fumes, the ethanol fumes can rot yer brain cells, and sufocate you.

Cooling... interesting. I took out one of the default fans on my PC because it was too noisy. I decided not to put the covers back in place so heat escapes more easily. It's been a while since I did that, but it works just fine.
What is the highest % of CPU speed you could gain with cooling?

Kasperg: go for Zalman with air-cooling. Here and here are a couple of screenshots of my Zalman CPU and GPU fans. Each running across, I think, three volts with this fan controller, they're silent, and I get >60? idle CPU temperature. That way I can leave me PC on at night at my feet and not notice a thing.

The "bloody" point is for benchmarking. sigh noobs sigh

EDIT: FYI, the best air cooling possible is a Thermalright XP-120 plus a high-CFM 120mm fan such as a 12v Delta.

Unlike you, m0p, we use the computers for useful/fun things. Gaming, mapping, working all beat the hell out of measuring your e-penis with your benchmark buddies. I can actually not see the point of having a computer that's too good for the present software.

The real question is... why not?

That water thing ain't the best, or the most effecient. Seriously. Refrugeration is the most effecient way to get subzero temperatures. Except from maybe DICE or LN2.

No that wouldn't work. Capacitors don't work in the cold, and you'd get terrible condensation.

You wouldnt want to stick your comp in water, no matter how pure it is. I have seen some people stick there entire PC in a tank of oil though. Still, it didnt cool all that well.

dude, HrnyGoat, ultra pure water is a non-conductor. h2o only conducts electricity because of the salts in it.(as well as some other contaminates.)

oil does work as a semi-good heat transfer material, but not great.

If that water becomes the slightest amount contaminated though...

You can buy de-ionised water. But it cannot be pumped, otherwise it will lose it's "effect" and must be trated constantly to keep it de-ionised. This would cost alot of money and owuldn't be worth the effort. You can however use de-ionised water in a static tank, with the heatsource inside. They use this stuff to cool down huge transformers, etc.

it should stay de-ionized if the pump was in a faraday cage, but im guessing at that.

and im probably going to try it out with my sisters old PC, if I can find a good place to buy the water
