It would have to be the worst concept for a film EVER. Cheap, pathetic crossovers NEVER work.

Alien vs Predator2 is a good game,I think it uses the hl1 engine. Its a really cool game where you can chosee up to 3 character.Predator,Aliens,Human(the most exciting 1 is humans)
Half life 1 has fear and action. And a feeling to survive the big accident in the black mesa.Hl2 is just like a battlefield, kill kill kill non stop.Every corner=1 combine cop.Too many combine cops that there is no new npc.(and strider)Ant lions were not cool ,I would like to battle them not make them as my pets.

video game films suck and tend to 'destroy' the game franchise. Seriously, game movies suck with a capital S. And can't/don't know any good movies based on games.

Anyone read the recent interviews with Gabe Newell? He spoke about a Half-Life movie somewhat. They tried writing a script for it, some Hollywood guys tried too, but at the end, Valve thought it wouldn't make a good enough movie. Well, see for yourself what he said.

Anyway, Half-Life compared to Half-Life 2...
I think I liked the first most because it was refreshing, different than most other shooters. Half-Life 2 isn't a bad game, it plays away nicely and there's a lot of fun to it, but I felt that special thing was lost a bit. Maybe that's always the case with sequels, but maybe it could've been better than this.
From a mappers perspective, I liked Half-Life's diversity in enemies and weapons much more. I like Half-Life 2's new technology and increased possibilities though that makes production time longer and it's art content has quite some impact on mapping as it was. Nowadays anyone can make a map look good because of it's textures. Back then, those textures weren't so good and you had to create actual good architecture and make the map flow well. That last part is still the case, luckily... ;)
Anyway, I think a lot of people are pulled out of it now that it takes a texture artist and a modeller more to make a map stand out. It's not just mapping anymore. HL2's content gets quickly overused and only fits the styles and themes it was made for, it gives little freedom for other themes I think.

My 2 cents.

That is so true.
I remember that Habboi told me my HL2DM maps all looked the same. It is true, I end up using the same textures and props all over again. Even the remake of my map Punishment is strange, because the original map had egyptian style textures and the HL2DM version is pure City 17.
There's no way I could redo the custom textures of my maps in 512x512 pixels, and that's the main reason why I'm going to stop source mapping after the compo.
A pity, since the new water and reflections could make my maps look better.
There's almost no room for imagination. In every map, I follow the "make a dispacement texture with the garbage texture, and put the trash-textured overlay on top of it"
The worst part of all, is that after having used the improvements of the new Hammer editor, going back to the old one is a real pain.

Yeah, I totally agree on that one...

All my inside maps all come out with nova prospekt textures since there the only one that look good to my opinion.. :glad:

I'd really recommend at least trying to create such textures. It's hard at first but will open up a wide array of new options. Sure, maps will take longer to build now so you should have a decent layout done before starting to do the looks (you don't want to waste time on models and textures that never get used) but I think it's worth it.

I'll go give it a try. Anyone remembers mudanchee, the map I never finished? Well, HL2 with it's dispmaps gives me the perfect engine to do it... I've got a layout done and am giving one of the area's some dismaps, then I'll start creating textures to make it look distinct, make it look like I intended it to do. It will probably take quite a while to finish this map now, but I'm going for it. It's a good opportunity to sharpen my overall skillset too... :)

What I do think is that the modding community will focus more on creating mods rather than a lot of custom maps. I hope that communities will spring up that bring modellers, texture artists and mappers (and sound composers?) together, otherwise I only see a future for very similar maps, and good all-round mappers...

I believe most people's dislike of HL2 is based on the fact that the game environment is based in the real world. By doing so, it's basically limited in the "imagination" department compared to HL1.

HL1 is also much more conducive to mapping, because the texture collection is so versatile. Perhaps that's another reason for disdain for HL2. After all, this is a mapping community.

But that shouldn't make HL2 an inferior game. Can you honest say that there wasn't a sense of awe when you're first strolling through the train station, watching the realism around you? The immersive experience is exquisite. And Valve sacrificed variety to realism. It's comparing two completely different style of games.

And as you can tell, people's opinion varies, based on what they like personally from a game.

I like both games, for different reasons. HL1 is a wonderful breakthrough in gaming. Dare I say that it's as much a breaththrough as the original Wolfenstein 3D. HL2 carried that legacy and re-invented the realism in gaming exeprience. It created an extremely realistic virtual world that has surpassed any games before it.

The joy of Half-Life!

I am nearing the end of HL1, just trying to kill Nilhilanth. What a game!

I agree. HL2 can't beat the original one in creativity and the wonder of the Xen world. Even though it's an oldie, it's got charm to spare.

A Half life movie should not be made. Why, that was the point of half life, that is why it became so popular. You actually felt like you were him, I liked the train ride showed you your backround, and black mesa's atmosphere. It is supposed to make you feel like you were him.

Remember the begining of hl2? After you get passed the stuttering Gman(hated that part) it was like hl, gave you that feel that you were him, The part where the cops break the doors, then you have the roof chase.... best part in any game, then you meet Alyx, went to the lab, then crap happened, then you take your first step....

.....boom, feelings gone. that is were it became boring.

Doom 3, were i am so far, is like that makes you feel like your in it. And do you mean the liandri conflict? I hate that game, don't buy it. Seriosly, it is an insult to shooters and fighters at the same time. the only good thing about that is when you turn on melee only, quad jumps, wall running, and speed. it can get fun there sometimes.

and half life 2 is a great game better than half life i would say, if it wasn't a sequel, it would have been much better as it's own game(wouldn't be that hard eirther)
