I've been trying to learn how to draw (and failed miserably, mind you), and made these following tutorials / copying wc2.
Sorry for the huge images, but hey, I like my posts big.
Edit: Oh, and they're taken with a digi-cam (a crappy one at that), which explains the horrible "gradient-like" lighting.
The second one I just selected parts of the paper and Shift-L(auto-levels)ed in photoshop.

I've actually modelled one of those for a city HL map, kindof planned a RTS-styled machinima but never done anything with it after a while. If anyone's interested, I could fix up some screenshots but it's nothing too fancy.
I'll model them sooner or later, high-poly perhaps, but that's not going to be anywhere soon. School...

Last year I found a nice method to get better contrast: I usually darken the paper with charcoal, and obtain the white with an eraser (instead of using the white of the paper). I have some nice water paintings, but we handed them in at the end of the year and the teachers have to give them back.

Thank you all for the compelents! That last picture I did is supposed to be a woman and a man...but...the man didn't look very manly, so i added facial hair (People still confuse him with a woman though :P).
