How useful would a WAD vault be at twhl. I know that i would release textures every week of all sorts of themes. With some practice and junk i could make textures for source as well. Or, does anyone know a reliable place where i can post wads and link them to TWHL.

Any suggestions or help will be appreciated. :glad:

There was the wadfather site, but that one isn't really alive anymore last time I checked.

I think it's a good idea to have a vault here at TWHL. A model vault would be nice as well. I still have some prop models and a few .wad files lying around and there are some modellers on this site, so maybe it could take off well...

We don't have the bandwidth, y'know. If I remember correctly, we can allow for about 700MB/day... and we're pretty close to that all the time. atom had to pay an "extra bandwidth" charge last month.

No. Why would we? Old maps owned by long-gone authors are hardly going to account for much usage.

I think I worked out that about 40MiB/day is taken just by hits on the index page.

Cleaning out the map vault is a last resort option, methinks.

Anyway, what about hosting off-site to save on bandwidth, and urging people to host maps themselves? Free webspace isn't hard to get so linking to some free sites on the upload map page could be a good idea...

EDIT: I see, it's just page views and forum posting alone that takes up most of the bandwidth. How much do downloads contribute to that?

since a vault on twhl is now out of the question, can someone guide me to some web hosting stuff?

I don't have any detailed breakdowns of exact bandwidth usage, just hit counts, and they can't really tell me everything. I may be able to ask atom next month, though. I believe he's enabled some degree of server-management bandwidth usage logging.

700mb of bandwidth? that's a little low, I've seen plans for 1gb of bandwidth/1gb space for +-$14/month!

700x30=21000, 21gb, as any well educated american knows.

Anyhow, how about removing all images from the forums and sites and replacing them with clean colour backgrounds? Avatars would ofcourse be replaced with ascii art.

Of course everbody would like to 'prune' the map vault.

I personally would like to banish many member's maps to the great singularity. Unfortunately, that sword cuts both ways...

Also, Atom has made it clear previously he has no intention of doing that. Learning site, blah blah blah.

Oh well it's probably for the best.

the whole bandwidth issure is why i proposed putting Google AdSense
<here.
with the trafic this site gets, you would have a good amount of money setting it to pay you per 1000 views. or you could do as ZL said and have the members spam the pay per click version of it.

that way, all bandwidth issues would be reduced

I think that's a bit of an extreme idea, Loffe. I'll research caching instead.

I always host so that saves some space :glad:
Hm, I suppose you could get rid of some things to reduce usage e.g. journal :

most big sites have ads to pay for bandwidth.
couldn`t TWHL do the same?

This has already been discussed in the TWHL3 thread.
