Ansith, where in Aussie do you live, I can make a fast computer for around $700, without monitor of course, you can use flat screen 17 inch acer for around $300, so total package would see $1,000 .....pm me if interested ok ;)

Elon Yariv: This thread is not spam. It's a valid question that could spawn interesting discussions.

Your posts, however, are. Don't post something if you don't have anything relative to add to the thread. And, for gods fucking sake, stop using smileyls.

I suggest going for a decent high-end system. So, get a Socket 939 CPU (AMD64's are a good choice) at least a gig of RAM (can't go wrong with two gigs though) and a DX9 card to enjoy the shader effects in HL2.

Building computers is so fucking easy. It's not like you have to fabricate the CPU by hand, and solder the PSU yourself by hand. Wow, it's so difficult to plug a few cards in, and use a screwdrivers! [/sarcasm]

ok Ansith, I live in Adelaide,

built my own computer, its not that hard (realy), you can buy all parts from places like IT-warehouse.
the computer box, mother board, proccessor (latest "AMD" are good), DDR RAM 512 or go for 1 gig, recordable CD-rom/DVD drive, dont need floppy, network card (about $10 dollars), good sound card, Radion 9600xt graphics card good set of speakers and just get an acer 17 inch flat screen monitor, all this cost me was $1,000 Dollars

I recently bought myself a few new parts. You should be looking for new parts, and just upgrading instead of a new PC. You should get something above 3Ghz, (at least) 1GB of memory, a nice new motherboard and a fairly recent/good video card (try the 6600GT or x800 for a budget card that'll run decently with HL2 max settings). I bought something similar for 900 bucks. Fairly cheap. :)

You should NEVER judge a CPU by it's clockspeed. A decent Pentium 4 should be at least 3.4GHz. A decent A64 should be at least 2.4GHz, and a decent Pentium-M should be at least 1.8GHz (preferably overclock it to 2.7, not difficult unless you lack basic computer skills :x).

er. Sorreh.

What I meant was to get a Pentium 4 over 3GHz, or an AMD over a 3000+. Or something.

m0p, you must remember that not all of us have the equivelant of 'the money cheat' in real life :tired:

I couldnt afford a 3.4Ghz processor if i saved up for a year!
Just spent ?190 on an upgrade and i still cant play HL2 on full graphics.

Posted 18 years ago2005-10-04 08:40:43 UTC Post #139256
what do you need for it to play on full?
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-04 09:08:36 UTC Post #139259
Depends what resolution. Even a 9800xt + 3.4GHz P4 + 1GB of RAM should be able to play HL2 with everything at max (bar AA and AF, and at 1024x768.) with 2xAA and 4xAF.
m0p m0pIllogical.
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-04 09:21:43 UTC Post #139261
Well all I can suggest is:

Cpu should be 3.5Ghz+
Ram should be 1gb+
Graphics - 256mb or 128 if you really can't afford a 256 one.
Sound card - not very necesary unless you're working with music, sounds, etc.

I'm not a pro at computer technology, but I'm gonna buy a new one soon and that's my min. requirement plan.
And it's really way cheaper to buy a computer in parts and then assemble it. It might take you one evening if you're not experienced, but you will save some cash.

no. wrong. I got a laptop with an athlon64+60gig hd+15.4" screen+512mb for $1500.

radeon igp, 3.2ghz p4, 512mb ram shared with video card, and I can run hl2 @ 1280x800!

Spend some money, ansith. It'll be worth it in the long run, because you won't have to spend as much on upgrades later.

Daubster, GFX RAM doesn't make a different over 256MB at the moment. And never judge a GFX card by it's RAM capacity. a X800XTPE with 256MB of RAM is far superior to a 9800XT with 256MB of RAM.
m0p m0pIllogical.

Oh, and don't underestimate hd speed (especially if you're lacking in ram) because a slow hd slows everything down! Get as fast a hd as you can afford (>=7200 rpm)

Yea.. Forgot to mention that it depends on the card itself.

Dell 8300
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz (2 CPU)
2 Gigs
Direct X 9

Works fine on full graphics...

I'm with Ant and m0p in pretty all regards. Building a PC is not hard, and it gets easier all the time. All you need is a screwdriver. Really.

My advice: don't skimp on anything. Computers are complicated things. One lousy part can screw you over.

This is where work comes in ;]

I'm in the same boat/wagon/blackhack/whatever as Ant and m0p and Seventh - It's so freaking easy. I built a computer when I was in seventh grade or some shit.

Check TigerDirect, NewEgg, etc for deals on parts and the like. Most everyone else has made valuable suggestions.

Trapt: It'd be stupid to merely upgrade the parts for a PC as old as his. He'd be better off getting a brand new one.
