i had a 3.0ghz fujitsu piece of crap that although I hated so much. dunno why, it just oozed crapness!! now got an overclocked 3.4 petium 4, 1Gb ram, 500GB hard-drive (those 10000rpm things are weird. only come in 47, 74gb etc) anyway, an 9800 pro. I HATE ALL DELLS. They seem powerful, but their soooo not!!!!
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-09 06:00:46 UTC Post #146146
Well I just wanted to know what kinda of ram i needed, because at the moment im looking at IT-warehouse and i just had a search for ddr ram and i don't know whitch one to get, im getting the things that lefty advised me to get(see page 1) except for im going to get a radeon 9800xt, so can anyone tell me what type to look for

oh and i cant find which prossesor to get ,im getting an amd one but it says somthing like only 800mhz on most of em and then under them it says 2.2ghz, i don't really understand that well

as you can probably tell im not very good with computer parts and stuff
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-09 10:49:55 UTC Post #146178
I think the 800MHz may refer to the motherboard-CPU connection speed. I can't see a budget anywhere so far?

Well i was aiming for $1000-$1500

Which i really want to get a good enought computer to play hl2 on full to get the best out of it.

So about ?650. From looking at your present PC's specs, you're buying a whole PC with that lot. I'll do you up a rough price list for a balanced PC in a bit and will edit this post. I don't know how much Aussie PC parts are different in price to ours.

Ok thanks seventh, and yea i don't know how much our doller is worth against your money
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-10 04:40:57 UTC Post #146324
I don't mean the currency conversion. Our PC parts are about 50% more expensive than America's.

Right, this lot comes to about $1,300 AUS, excluding tax. It's approximate since, as I've said, the part price may vary. Probably a good guideline though.

Currency conversions by xe.com.

Don't skimp on the power supply! You can't really skimp on any central components. That's my advice.

If you get a different motherboard, make sure that it has an AGP graphics port and not a PCI-E one.

Oh ok, Ill just have to find somewhere where i can get all of those things ,i had a look for the processor but its 310 bucks ,so ill have a look somewhere else, so i might be able to get a better price

Edit: i was looking at the processors speed as well (sorry if im asking stupid questions) but it only says 2.2ghz as the clock speed, and i was told to get 3.5ghz ,are you meant to overclock it os something?
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-10 15:12:35 UTC Post #146419
No. You certainly can, if you wish. Mid-range Venice (the sub-version) Athlon64s are meant to overclock excellently.

AMD desktop processors are generally 'faster' gaming-wise than Intel desktop processors of the same clock speed. I think the super-turbo-mega high-end dual-core Athlon X2s only run at about 2.8GHz.

Yes ,I'm sure it will. Thinks how good it will be

EDIT: And with the radeon 9800 which i most likely get, should i get 9800 pro or 9800XT?
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-11 06:23:47 UTC Post #146529
Well, my friend with an XT does get noticably better framerates, but it's not a massive difference in general, I don't believe. If you want to run at high resolutions with anti-aliasing, a 256MB XT would probably be good. Just get the best you can afford.

Posted 18 years ago2005-11-11 06:31:39 UTC Post #146530
Ok thanks, I just had a look at the XTs and there is a big price rise (Just on one site i had a look at) from the pro being around $200 and then the XT being to $500 , but im sure ill find a good site which ill be able to get a pro or an XT for Under $200
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-11 06:47:47 UTC Post #146533
maybe get a 400watt 20 amp power supply, you can even get them with lights inside if you are building a pro gamer case...

oh and think about the hard drive..if you go to LAN gaming rooms and want to leech movies/music/games it would pay to get 200gig HD or stick with 80gig and you could get an external plug in HD later when money is availiable
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-11 07:15:28 UTC Post #146536
I cant seem to find the RADEON 9800 , the Tagan TG480 or the Liteon light scribe anywhere on the australian computer sale sites :(. I might have to get them somewhere else , like the one that seventh got the prices, but i think itll cost me a bit more than if i look for ages on ebay or google etc etc...

I did find the radeon on ebay but its only going to be there for 9 days , and its a good price as well 199.50

@lefty: If i can find good prices i should be able to get the things seventh said, but what power supply and HD would you recomend for the 200gig HD and the 400W power supply?

Oh And do you know many sites that have good prices on computer parts? Ive already searched It-warehouse for all of the things but they dident have all of them.

I did have a look on the AMD site but i couldent really find what i was looking for.

Don't bend any pins :P.

Static electricity's never given me any problems. Still, might as well wear one of those wristbands, maybe. m0p? Commentes?

Before you touch and sensitive components, touch first a large piece of metal, like the frame of your pc, to dischrge any static electricity.

And don't work in your socks on the carpet! :D
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-16 06:34:39 UTC Post #147353
I'm not sure about all the "touch this", "touch that", "leave the PC plugged in", etc. As an electronics student, my advice is simply "don't touch the pins". Would make more sense to me if the advice was "touch the socket before you install the CPU". No, wait, that makes as little sense as touching the CPU pins directly if the socket's not earthed. Hum.

Posted 18 years ago2005-11-16 06:47:24 UTC Post #147355
Discharging your static before you start touching whatever, would probably be a good idea anyway imo. Wehn you touch the frame your doing the same thing the wristlet would do. ;)

Another analogy is touching the static port before fueling at the gas...erm.. petrol station.

And for god's sake I'm not saying once you touch the frame, start fingering sockets and massaging pins and such!

Where is m0p when he's needed? :P
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-16 07:12:01 UTC Post #147357
Yea someone i talked to on msn told me to touch the frame before i start and not to worjk on carpet and the reason i can't go and buy the band its 8:15 and my mum doesnt want to drive me out to a computer store.

and ive been having all look around the computer takeing things out from the hunk o junk, but I cant seem to find the processor, The only other thing i need to take out of it apart from the ram which was the first thing i grabbed out, Theres a fan, would it be behind there or somthing?

Very strange, ive just put an extra 256mb of RAM in and i already had 128 in the pc , it only says ive got 256 when i should have 300 something, but im happy that i dident kill the computer by doing this
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-18 13:22:27 UTC Post #147800
that's probably because your mobo has a max limit for ram, and it ignores what it can't use. Or, the bios settings are f*cked.

About the static thing... If you don't want to buy a wristband, (in the us, they're like $5) leave the computer plugged in to a grounded outlet, and touch a metal part of the case, or the power supply, or something. Then UNPLUG THE COMPUTER BEFORE TOUCHING ANYTHING ELSE!!! That should work.
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-19 21:29:02 UTC Post #148044
I've had a look around at some PC stores but all of em say that they don't make em anymore or that its too good for the store to sell (very strange), So a guy at one of them said the the 9600XT was fine to run HL2 on max settings and it runs almost any game. He also tole me that AMD athalon 64s were old news and i should get something better. So what do you guys think?

EDIT: But i might stick with the athalon 64
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-20 06:56:41 UTC Post #148065
So... he thinks that 9600s are top-of-the-range, and Athlon64s are out of date? Weirdo or lying salesman :|.

Stick with the A64. Don't let him unload a Celeron on you!

On static electricity: Get a PSU, plug it in, put it on standby. Just touch it before and after handling components. Static wristbands are silly, and just get in the way. Oh, make sure you are standing on a wooden or concrete floor while working on components too, to minimize risk of static buildup even further. And, don't wear any clothes which contain nylon. All of those precautions are unneccesary, but it's not worth risking all of that money on dead hardware.
m0p m0pIllogical.

Well I've had a look around, been to the sites that sold the radeon 9800 pro 2 years ago and it seems no one sells it anymore, the best they go up to is a 9600XT or Pro, So, if anyone can tell me where to find one, please tell me because i can't find one anywhere.
