What is everybodys opinion on peer-to-peer dling?
P. S. For those of you who don't know what P2P is i'll explain:

its a network of people all connected via a program like KaZaA or Morpheus and the original Napster!

People all over several industries complan that their copyright material gets stolen. But doesn't P2P help honest joes do things like our mapvault except without TWHL part?

Hurrah for p2p! Means you can get live bootlegs of songs - that's not wrong since the bands weren't going to release the songs anyway.

Yes, too, only I doubt there are very many BSPs on KaZaA ;)

if DRM isn't hacked within 5 mins of its release, p2p will die pretty quickly next year

I'm a theif! I'll admit it and you should too... if you download copyrighted materials you are stealing! DRM might change things, but I doubt it. There are plenty of hackers with way too much free time... remember that WinXP was on p2p before it was in the stores! If p2p takes a dive I won't worry... I've known how to use FTP servers since before there was a www.

And if the Copyright Cops come knocking on my door? I planned ahead for that... the DSL is in my dog's name so he's the one who will be arrested / sued / beaten with bamboo canes.

If the copyright cops come to my door, ill get my parents. I aint of legal age (hahaha).
Now, kazaa and morpheus is spyware. No good, bad bad.
And besides they dont have working games :x
Sure im a thief, and what'cha gonna do about it? Sue me(damn, they actually can :P)?

Like the police would actually bother knocking on a private person's door. No, they're going after the guys who copy and sell.

kazaa is in the whatnow??? can the cops trace ip addresses???

Now what does DRM do?
Posted 20 years ago2004-01-28 03:58:58 UTC Post #14166
Restricts what you can do with the files, i.e. can't copy them can only play them.

KaZaA is spyware. So's Morpehus, and, I imagine, Grokster. There are certain variations of these which have been modified.

I reckon this thread can continue as long as there are no links provided.

Morpheus is dead as far as I'm concerned. And Kazaa is spyware, DC++ is illegal and users are hunted by the police.
That's why I don't use these programs.

I only say p2p would die because any sort of file sharing will probably die, DRM means no more media unless you've bought it from somewhere

all of you are missing a vital part of copyright law:

YOUR individual country has its own laws of copyright and e-biz
Check your gov's webpage to get the legal info, its there i'm pretty sure, thanks to the freedom of information act over here ;) (here=EU)

Most of the sites that have been mentioned operate in countries where there are no laws on the internet etc.. that's how they stay "legal"

Peer to peer programs are not illegal. Just the use of them for copyrighted material. Kazaa Lite is not spyware. And there are billions of replacements. And there are an assload more. Believe me, I know alot about the subject ;) . Also, there are plenty of ways around crap like that for sure. If DRM is an encryption method then It'll be cracked and easy to get around. The sheer fact is that in the end the RIAA will lose. This is like prohibition, it only teaches upstanding citizens to undermine the law and therefore the law must be changed to protect the people's rights .

I must say I agree. As fast as fifty paid copyright protecting-dudes can protect music, ten thousand hackers with no lives are screwing it up.

Kazaa and morpheus are all crap! Get Direct Connect! It is the best! You can download anything you want! It is very slow though unless you have broadband or better. It still beats the hell out of Kazaa!
m0p m0pIllogical.

I havent had the patience to learn how to use DC. There are plenty of more convenient ways unless you want to get really deep into the whole warez thing.
Posted 20 years ago2004-01-30 08:01:05 UTC Post #14440
DC++ is a more tight-nit community, you know who you are getting the files from and they know you. Stops any copyright types trying to get in as they HAVE to share legitimate files and be uploading, thus they must break the law to catch you or some other nonsense :)

Plus the network is full of legitimate shares, never had any problems so far and can get anything you want quickly (for the rarer stuff use e-mule)
