I have a question for all of you:

Do you do your own voice acting for mods, and if so, what equipment do you use? I wanted to do my own voice acting for future half-life mods, but my basic computer microphone sucks. Bad. Even taping a construction paper cone around it to amplify the sound doesn't work, and tinkering with it in Audacity only makes it sound worse.

So, what stuff do you guys use, and are there any good tips to follow?

Well, have you ticked "20dB boost" in Volume Control?

1. Start -> Run -> sndvol32
2. Options -> Advanced Controls
3. Options -> Properties -> Adjust volume for: Recording
4. "Advanced" button beneath the Microphone slider
5. Tick it

Get http://audacity.sf.net/ NOW! This is an open-source, excellent sound application, with all the filters/modification tools you'd need. Plus there's the ever-handy noise removal tool.

I use the free GoldWave...

Yes, its crap... I only use it for voices, since it actually does a good job there.

For music, I compose with Finale, and use their performance thingy to make it into a plausable .wav file.

Finale is VERY expensive, but totally worth the cost...

I'll try out some of the other recorders, but I'll stick with Audacity for now.

I've been using the "20db Boost" option and attempted to record my sounds in Audacity. The problem is that most of the time when I use Noise Reduction to remove the background noise (I usually pause a bit after I speak so I can get a good amount of noise), it makes my recording sound hollow. I tried Normalize and Equalize, but those didn't work like I hoped they would.

Anyone using Audacity know what to do?

Use Sound Forge's Noise Gate.

Sound Forge is the Photoshop of the audio world. It's supreme.
