argh.. i cant stand the lag any longer.. its not ping but the framerate.. on CS:S, its killing me, its like 5 frames a second while im trying to slay bots and its impossible to play.. i need to know what graphics card you guys would recomend.. and so you know im very VERY broke. i dont know if i can afford $150 (my parents would have to buy that.) i will kill myself if that is not enough to get something at least decent.
somebody told me that the Radeon 9550 was a very good choice for my budget.. what do you guys think?

currently i have some crappy stock card that came with this gateway... (help me  )
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-06 06:22:56 UTC Post #145653
it does depend completely on your budget. every 5-10? extra would help. for something around ?40-50, maybe a Radeon 9200SE, 9550 is good but is a bit more. the 9200SE also has a TV output. Obivously, if you could afford a 9800PRo, that would better, not the best, but a definately worthy card for its price. I don't really know much about Nvidias, never had one.

Personally i would find any way to get money and get a good one, coz when you can afford it, youll be annoyed that you wasted any money. borrow sum or wateva, its just not worth skimping on a graphics card, no matter how desperate you are.
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-06 06:29:07 UTC Post #145655
$150 could, I'm sure, get you a 9800 in Yankl'nd. They're rather superior to the 9550s. They're alright cards; I have one at the moment.

You might be wasting your money, though. What's the rest of the PC like? Use FreshDiagnose (freeware) to find out if you're unsure.

Don't buy anything if you're not sure of what you're doing. A lot of people here will be able to advise you as to what will work if you ask us and give us sufficent information.

ok cool. now that I installed FreshDiagnose, what should i tell you about my system? A 9800 is good right? and where the hell is Yankland? (please dont say bizzaro land =< )

A 9800 would run everything right, right?

My opinion: Source is overrated and mostly blows.

Play original cs instead, and enjoy the sweet, sweet, pwnage... :D

How did you guys get Yankland out of America? or is it a town/city?

i dont care rowley. i didnt buy it so i could not play it >_<
the original cs is still great, but i love ragdolls. especially when i shoot their knees.

Yankland - Land of the yanks. Yanks = Yankies = Another name for the "Souths" during the U.S. Civil War. Basically, a stereotypical American (i.e. the Southern drawl, etc) - Ant

What's your current system (CPU, RAM etc) ? Even three-year-old cards can cope with the source engine without problems...
Source is overrated and mostly blows
Source is one of the best game engines around. Much better than Doom's, FEAR's the old Quake III engine etc.
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-06 21:47:55 UTC Post #145842
Did you try adjusting/disabling some of your CVARs?

I disabling a bunch, and messed around with them for a while, but I've since given up on Source until I get a better machine.

My friend Mark raves about these, and claims he gets a huge FPS boost.
Source is one of the best game engines around.
Well, that's like, your opinion man. I personally think HL2 is the greatest letdown in all of gaming history, but that's like, my opinion too. :)

Edit: Uh Oh! Save me from 7th's wrath Ant!!!

Now, that's just BS and you know it! - Ant
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-06 22:16:04 UTC Post #145844
That's not my opinion. That's a fact. I'm talking about Source (game engine) not Half-life 2 (game).
My computer can run source based games with good performance but it slows down with games like FEAR. The only reason why

1)a game runs fine when you are in the middle of city 17 surrounded by buildings and people and

2) the other game is choppy when you are walking in a dark and narrow hallway with only two pipes

is that one engine is good and the other is crap. And I think there have been many more letdowns in gaming history.
Just out of curiosity, what did you all HL2 bashers expect from the game? Seriously, it amazes me how someone can be let down by the game. Did you want another Black Mesa game? Perhaps Gordon Freeman carrying Zelda's Master Sword? WTF??? :x

ehm.. CPU (pentium 4 processor?) 2.6 ghz, 496 mb of ram

that should work.. But Noooo.. has to get all gay on me... ..eeww
hey look ant is talking through other people

That's a fact.
The fact is, this thread concerns making recommendations on a new graphics card, not the merit of the Source engine. - Ant

The fact is no graphics adapter is going to make Source any better. Let us know how much it still sucks after you drop $150 for a new card.

HAHAHAA! Even I know CompUSA is a joke, and I'm not even American :D.

Look at a real shop, mate. You'll want more RAM, too. 512MiB isn't great. The CPU's alright. You might want to look at benchmarks of the new-ish low-end X?00s, the X700 and such. I don't know how they perform; could be an idea. Otherwise I'd say a RADEON 9800 or a GeForce 6600.

Ant: that shows how poor a card it is. It uses 16MiB of main memory for texture storage!

I imagine getting a new graphics card will increase performance and quality massively.

Well the Radeon 9800 on newegg were $239 and the one on compusa is $228.98 ,but i don't know if they are both on the us doller or whatever.

Don't get one with 128-bit memory. The first one of your list is the best. The middle one pretty clearly says "MAC EDITION".

the first one? ok! and your sure that will run it correctly?
"MAC EDITION".
riiight. i saw that ;)

Almost certainly, but you never posted your full specs. I very much doubt that there are any P4 motherboards that don't have 8xAGP slots, but if anyone will, Gateway will.

how do i check if have any 8x AGP slots? is this a newer thing cus this compy is about a year old..
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-09 22:26:44 UTC Post #146293
Shit, if you dont have PCI-E and AGP (worst case scenario BTW; this is what i had to do), get the GeForce 6200. Best card for a PCI port. I can run HL2 at full graphics nicely ;)

[offtopic] Yankees were Northerners if I'm not mistaken [/offtopic]

Try Tiger Direct they have excellent prices on RAM, and other stuff. BTW my Radeon 9550 runs all games wonderfully thank you very much, I dont think the 9800 is the best choice for your budget.
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-10 18:43:31 UTC Post #146447
I disagree. It fits neatly into his budget and performs better than the 9500 in most of these.
